Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

Holy fuck, Street Fighter is one of my top games, I am a huge fan of the IP. Luckily I have a PS4, I would have been pissed if I went with Xbox One.

A game like this being exclusive, i think hurts the fighting game community. SF should be on every console. Unless Sony funded, like dead rising 3. And i say this as a ps fanboy.

Huh? The fighting game community were always on Playstation platforms since the PS1 days.

Seems to me like moneyhatting isn't always a bad thing...

In a situation where a game was already in development and most likely multiplat... then a publisher steps in with the moneyhat and bogards the game from it's competitors... thats BS. The exact kind of competition that hurts gamers rather than benefits.

But if its a situation where the developer cannot make the game because they either don't have the capital or the executives are unable to take the financial risk AND THEN a publisher steps in to help with funding in order for the game to get made. That's amazing and we should be thankful.

We've recently seen examples of both.

Let's take some time to get the facts straight and see which situation SFV falls into BEFORE people start crying bloody moneyhat foul.

This must be why the head of Xbox Japan resigned. I bet this was the final fucking straw for Redmond. No one expects Xbone to be a serious contender in Japan. They maintain a market there for one reason: keep the dozen or so Japanese IPs still vital in the west on Xbox. And then this goober goes a lets Sony buy exclusivity. Right after MS paid Evo who knows how much to make Xbone the official tournament console!

He's lucky to still have all 10 fingers. What a disaster.

holy crap that sounds crazy

MS paying money for a tournament only to see the most significant fighting franchise only on ps4 must be maddening to them. the irony

Seriously? Capcom unable to fund the first new-gen instalment of one of their most - if not THE most - iconic series? Hard to believe...

That said, this teaser didn't blow me away as I wished.

I loved SFIV artstyle, I thought it was a huge step in the right direction, in order to keep the series' visual identity intact, and using the new hardware capabilities at the same time.

SFV... Well, it kinda looks like a more detailed and more 'realistic' SFIV, which - in my opinion - is quite a contraddiction. The effect - for now, and also considering how dramatically SFIV improved from its early stages to the final build - is not impressive at all for me.

I expected Capcom to pull the same kind of artistic 'reworking' behind Arc's Guilty Gear Xrd, whereas they seem to have followed the Tekken way, this time around.

I don't know, I wouldn't call its art style "realistic". More like "stylized", compared to SFIV. Like I said in another post, to me it looks like an hybrid between SFIII and SFIV art styles. I am very much fine with that...

In any case, it is still too early to jump to any conclusion, and we have been shown very little in that trailer, so we'll see...

I feel this game is gonna pop up on XB1 also when it comes to the states, XB1 being not as popular in Japan it doesn't surprise me to see the game is only gonna be PS4 console exclusive there, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it does show up on XB1 at the same time as well in Western regions.

Still awesome to know we are getting another Street Fighter. Hopefully they do more than just better graphics though, I could never get into SFIV as much as I used to be into SFIII back in college.

Honestly I say we wait for more details... we don't know anything yet and everyone is already going crazy...
Did you look at the vid? Or missed all the hints by ono and Sony up to this reveal? Also the story that's widely available that there wasn't going to be a SFV?
Its exclusive.

Exclusive to PS4 is pretty fucking mindblowing. This is Street Fighter we're talking about. Must have been a pretty solid money hat.

Huh? The fighting game community were always on Playstation platforms since the PS1 days.

I was playing SF2 on my SNES LOOOONG before the PS1 was even out. Even when the PS1 came out, the Saturn was the go to system for fighting games.

Could the exclusivity be a Japan-only thing?

Wouldn't make sense to me based on how consoles are doing in Japan right now. This deal is only worth it if it's worldwide.

Love that Street Fighter V is being made but I told myself to never get a Vanilla version of a Capcom fighter after feeling really burned by Ultra Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming out the same year as Vanilla did.

If Sony funded the game, why did they also fund the PC Version (and Arcade version hopefully)?

Wouldn't you only want it on your platform? Why didn't they go the whole hog and fund the Xbox One Version too? Or the Neo Geo Port we need?

...and 1 year later, hadouken cabs makes sense. Excited this wasn't just a reveal for Ultra for ps4. Safe to assume full trailer or gameplay exhibition at Capcom cup next week?

Well a lot of Sony funded indies also release on PC.

Just built my PC so I can hop on this SFV train too! I wonder if we'll have exclusive guest characters again like in IV.

What? That's never happened in SF4 on any system unless you mean added characters to the console/pc release that weren't in the vanilla SF4 arcade release.

Anyways goddamn this a megaton.

I definitely agree with your entire post, though if you were to say that the Sega Saturn was the go to system for fighting games in fighting game tournaments, then it'll be another story, considering that the system didn't sell very well in comparison to PS1.

SF II sold about 6 million copies on SNES alone. I was one of those 6 million who have it for that console.

Haters gonna hate, but I dig the new art style. Looks like an hybrid between SFIII and SFIV's. Ryu looks especially improved from his Gorilla-like face.

I think I agree. I mean, I didn't entirely hate the art style of SF4, but the people felt a bit chunky and bloated. Just seeing Chun Li in that one shot, it feels like they've brought back a more sleek and streamlined look to the characters. I can't wait to see more.

Glad it's still coming to PC.

Even though I have a PS4, I'm glad it's on PC and I'll probably get the PC version over PS4.

When it comes to 90% of online MP games, all my online pals game on PC, with a fraction of that amount on console. It's always been like that for some reason. Having PC announced for a lot of games is pretty important to me.

Not really, everyone knows that they have financial problems.
Yeah, and this sort of thing doesn't happen overnight. The Hadouken Cabs promo last year indicates that this has been a partnership from the beginning, IMO. I have a feeling Sony helped out considerably with development costs and that we otherwise wouldn't have seen SFV at all, or at least not for a few more years.

As an Xbox owner, Street Fighter being a PS4 exclusive is an annoyance to me (my brother has a PS4, but it would be more convenient to just have it on the X1), but I can get over it. Same with Bloodborne. I just find these double standards baffling.

And guys: Sony isn't funding this game. Same way MS isn't funding Tomb Raider. Get real.

Man, why even bother pointing it out. lol, I stopped stressing over it a while ago. The double standard is plain as day (I say this as a PS4-only owner).

I honestly don't have a problem with exclusivity deals -- been that way since I started gaming.

Difference is Tomb Raider was announced as being multi-platform before mysteriously becoming an "exclusive" before it came out that it was only a timed "exclusive" while the whole time they were shady about admitting it.

Where did you come from?

Even if that list isn't 100% accurate, SF exclusivity is definitely not a new occurrence.

This list is disingenuous.

SF2 was available to every console under the sun. Specific versions of SF2 were exclusive to some consoles, but in the end all 16 bit consoles got SF2 and the definitive version of the game was available to both the Genesis and the SNES. Hopefully it's a timed exclusive and the Xbone gets the game when they start releasing the DLC and future content.

I don't like exclusives, but I gotta agree they work. I was pissed when TB was announced as exclusive because I would have bought it for the PS4, but I'm not such a big fan that I would buy an Xbone to play it. So I won't be able to play the game and it kinda pisses me off.

I am a big fan of SF though, and I would definitely buy an Xbone for it. I wouldn't even be pissed because I'm such a big fan that I would be more excited about the game than pissed about having to buy a console for it. Thankfully I already own a PS4.

I guess in the end all that matters is the game they are announcing and how you feel about it.

Not really. Tomb Raider was already being funded and released. MS hopped in and said "we want it only on us". For SFV, Ono tweeted that there was no budget for SFV, so Sony would have actually helped fund the project. Not really the same at all. It's like Bayonetta 2. The game wasn't going to get made, but Nintendo gave them the cash to make it happen.

This sure is assuming a whole lot. Are you an industry insider at multiple companies?

SF II sold about 6 million copies on SNES alone. I was one of those 6 million who have it for that console.

Consoles weren't used in tournaments at that point. Arcades still existed.

edit: things changed when the dreamcast was released, at least in the west

I don't play SF, but I watch my brother play. I was hoping they would switch up the visual tone this time around. Oh well. Looks cool.

Are you implying that MS wouldn't have been willing to help fund SF4?

Maybe both parties were interested, but Sony offered the better contract for Capcom?, ...who knows!.

Either way this is very good for Sony. SF might not be very popular among the casual crowd but the 'hardcore' audience is a large and dedicated one, especially right now following the success of SF4.

I just want it to be good!, in which case I'll purchase it no matter the platform (though I'll be getting it for PC most likely.)

Heh, Gaf's reaction doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Can't wait to see more, though I wonder if the eventual revisions will be available on XB1.

Of course they would. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if SFV itself never comes to X1, but Capcom releases Super SFV the following year for everything. I doubt Sony will want to cover Capcom's losses from not releasing this on X1 for each iteration, I'm sure the first iteration that hits X1 will sell quite well.

But yeah, I'm stoked to hear this announced, looks like I'll grab it on PC unless the netcode is terrible. Sucks for X1 only owners though, doesn't make sense to not bring it there outside of Sony moneyhats.

They've gone and done it... they've gone and woke the sleeping dragon now.

Sony should have left well enough alone and now they're going to get it. It's not enough that they're bleeding benjamins from practically every crevice of their existence. Now they go and throw immense moneyhats at a niche game like Street Fighter just to piss off the market. Why pay to keep a game out of the hands of as many gamers as possible? Why not put that money into first-party studios and games instead?

I know, I know... this is the way the business goes as they say. Well, they forced Microsoft's hands with their early sales lead and Microsoft only responded with an NPD whooping (source: musings thread) by way of incredible deals and value. Microsoft will undoubtedly follow this announcement up with some real megatons of their own.

Gears remake collection. A true Banjo sequel. Halo 5 beta in the hands of gamers. The next Bayonetta, Dead Space and Crysis as exclusives. Those are the kinds of blockbuster response announcements I expect, and then some. You hit Microsoft with a jab, you best be ready for a flurry of uppercuts coming at you in response.

This thread has been masterclass at how veiled the sarcasm has been. It has been nearly impossible to confirm the salt in some of these posts.

If the comment was serious, it is absolutely silly. Sony has made very clear that they are doubling(trippling?) down on the Playstation business because that is all they really have now in the face of failing TV and cell phone businesses. So that means that in addition to having the largest collection of first party studios, they have the go ahead to be aggressive with 3rd parties to fund games or entice exclusivity.

If all Microsoft has are the games you mentioned, they are in for a world of hurt. I would absolutely expect Microsoft to respond with their own megatons but none of those would dent Street Fighter V console exclusivity. Perhaps I can get them to squeeze out a Sakaguchi exclusive RPG announcement. Come on Microsoft - lets do this.
