Streets of Rage 2

i remember the first time i played this. i was sitting there, it was a birthday, had all my cousins and friends over, and that was it, it was time for Streets of Rage 2.

at the time, when the game first came out, then and there, i just couldn't ask for more out of my genesis. i was like 8 or so, but at that age, the game was perfection.

Streets of Rage 2. your fondest memories...

p.s. possibly as good as a soundtrack can get (but easily #1 on genesis as far as soundtracks go).

I had gone to the used game store with my ultra-hot (and understanding of my needs) girlfriend. I actually debated whether to get Streets of Rage 2 or ESWAT.

I made the right choice in the end.

GOD THAT SOUNDTRACK. Probably still on a tape somewhere around here.

I liked SoR 1 and 3 better, but all of them were great, IMHO. I think my fondest memories are of 1, and I still think it had by far the best soundtrack. It's amazing the bass that Yuzo Koshiro could get out of that kicky genny.

I didn't own a Sega Genesis until 94, but when i finally did got one, the first thing i did was rent SoR2 (despite being an old title).

What a blast, i had good times at the retail kiosk before i earned me a Genny.

One of my most played games of all time. Before and after school I would play the fuck out of it. One of my favourite games ever.

Max was the man. Grab them, forward + punch twice, then standing punch for mega damage.

Back in the day I recorded the music on to tape to listen to in my spare time.

It's still unequalled and much better than the later 3D attempts like Zombie Revenge. Dynamite Cop/Die Hard Arcade were good though.

Must have rented it at least 20 times. Don't know why we never actually bought it... It was hard as hell, but it didn't matter how many times we had to start all over, I never got tired of it. The teamplay element was so perfectly handled. The characters rule, and the moves/ combos were insane. The diversity in enemies and the incredible soundtrack make it one of my favourite games of all time.

SOR2 is the best of the three IMHO, but all three are great fun. SOR was great -- it has ittier bittier squished character graphics and fewer moves, but the music is just as awesome as in part 2, and the playability is there. SOR's special move is more of a smart-bomb style, takes down all the enemies on-screen at once, where as SOR2's special move is a life-consuming super move which can be used as often as you want, at your discretion -- changes up the gameplay between the two. SOR3 is a me-too SOR2 sequel, with more speed, new and cool dash/roll moves, and much worse music & characters (a kangaroo?)

I was in my early 20's and used to play this with friends all the time, co-op. I couldn't believe the graphics, the music, the voices back in the day! Blaze, Axel, Max, and Skate!

Absolutely loved the music (although I liked SOR1's music even more, honestly... especially level 3!) - probably one of the reasons why I listen mostly to trance/techno/house...

Man the SOR series owned my childhood. So many great memories. I agree with everyone else the soundtrack in SOR2 ruled! Me and my brother beat SOR2 so many times its insane. SOR2 is probably one of my most played games ever. Good times!

oh man just replayed SoR1 with one of my mates last week. So good on so many levels. It and Contra 1 are, in my opinion, the two best co-op games ever.

Yeah, I found it by searching from the Kikizo site. Great interview, though my heart broke that there was no mention of Ys I or Ys II music...

i remember reading gamefan, and dave halverson said something along the lines of "streets of rage is a REAL game, unlike the 1-on-1 gameplay of street fighter." lol. as if to say, "your game = no side-scrolling, game = not."

i mean, i love both games with extreme passion. but that line will forever stick with me...that crazy dave...

Probably my favorite beat em up and quite possibly my favorite Genesis game overall. 3 is very underrated though. A game with 3's gameplay enhancements with 2's enemy design, levels and music would be perfect.

Get past the ...music... and SoR3 truly kicks ass on all fronts. Part 2, though, will always have a place in my heart. I think now, with Ninja Gaiden, the DMC series and especially The Warriors, the gaming world is ready for a new Streets of Rage.

Except that Sega doesn't even know it exists half the time...

First level knife thrower. Daffy Duck sample. Discuss.

(Oh yeah, the amusement park level, with the filtered riff that reminded me of Seal's "Crazy".)

I loved playing Streets of Rage..Also I liked to play Double Dragon 2..Especially when u first found out how to get extra men by putting it in 2 player mode and killing the player 2..

I've always been confused to actually what Koshiro did for the Ys I/II soundtracks... I've heard the PCM synth stuff used in the towns, but the actual redbook was done by Ryo Yonemitsu.

Agreed. I think 3 was by far the best of the series, but SOR2 was damn good stuff and the music was simply mindblowing. Then again, so was SOR1's.

Oh yeah, I thought some of the music in SOR3 was pretty cool as well...about five or six tunes in all were high quality stuff. Alas the music that missed the mark missed it large.

I have such fond memories of SoR2. It was my 'blow off steam' game when I was a teenager. I loved the baseball field/ elevator/ wrestling ring.

Where can I get the soundtrack?

Is Streets of Rage 2 better than Final Fight (arcade)?

I think it is, because it's basically like Final Fight+. More technique, more variation, etc... even if it is a pretty hard bite of Final Fight.

So many fond memories of playing with my brother, my friends, roommates, etc. The music is my favorite of Yuzo's work, also. The best thing I can think of off of the top of my head is Mania mode...SUPER FUCKING HARD AS FUCKING HELL, but fun with a necessary SoR2 expert teammate. Could only play this mode in the Euro version, AFAIK, though. Still the overall best BEU out there, IMO.

You could open Mania on the US version with a code. Also 9 extra men and something else, I forget what. Maybe player vs player in the vs mode... like blaze v blaze

Holy shit! Really? Never knew that. I went out of my way to get a Euro version of SoR2 when I found out about its existence. :lol Ah well. My aversion to looking for codes fucked me.

Koshiro's compositions were rearranged by Ryo Yonemitsu for the TG16 CD games, but they're still Koshiro's songs!
