Not that I know of. The game just launched so they're probably still reeling from that. But then again I've been too busy playing it to pay attention to stuff being said about it heh.

Thanks for the reply. I'll still try it out then.

Completed the game now. Enjoyed the gameplay a lot but the story, voice acting and mission structure left some to be wished for.

Also, those instant beamturrets are complete b*** to fight. Hits you unless you time a Strike Suit dodge juuuust right.

Got to mission 8 and keep failing the mission, going to hit my head on it again tomorrow.

I'm enjoying it. I have no idea what the Eurogamer review means when the suit mode isnt mobile. Dash avoids attacks, timing is everything.

I say that, but as Keaser stays, those mini-beam turrets. URGH

Mission 8 is a bitch because it involves escorting another one of those paper thin ships. If you even look at the ship the wrong way it explodes. I just did that mission and failed it 8 times before I got past it >_>

square pies = communism
Among other things, the reviewer failed the first suit mission 20 times in a row.

How is that even possible? =O

So far the game isn't really sucking me in as much as I would have liked. About the only thing I really enjoy is taking on the capital ships. I usually go in spaceship mode to build up flux, then pick a good place to to shift into mech mode and start turreting for a while before turning back into a ship and soaring around again. It's alright, but as far as giant robots shooting streams of missiles games go I still like Omega Boost better.

Some quick notes after playing the first three missions:

  • The HUD design is not up to par for similar priced releases. It is not very well integrated into the game and it fails at conveying the needed information in an intuitive and clear manner. It unfortunately looks like a polished placeholder in a closed beta release. This might be the biggest drawback for me right now.
  • Voice acting and/or writing are bordering on unbearable. The manuscript should have gotten a draft review before being sent to VA recording.
  • Paul Ruskay's music is fantastic. It really is high quality compositions and recording.
  • Space vistas are incredibly rich in detail and both are nice and colorful
  • Ship models range in quality in terms of polygon detail - some of them seem too quickly made
  • Weapon diversity make the game very interesting
  • I can't wait for proper cockpit view.

I love how the Strike mode missiles are just called "Circus"

Got the Strike Suit. I love how it just dumps missiles all the time.

I could see how that mission would be considered a difficulty spike, since there is suddenly way more going on than in the the first few missions.

Valid points. I find it interesting that Jamin has remained silent since the game went live and hasn't revisited the thread to address anyone's grievances.

I direly wish they would fix up the UI. If they just do that in a patch I'll be happy.

Jamin posted a couple things in the Eurogamer review comments (along with someone claiming to be part of the dev team that was a bit hurt by the review).

And I'd say that Gamespot review is quite.....spot on.

Figured I'd throw my two cents in here in case anyone was on the fence still.

Picked this up yesterday after reading up on it a bit. I liked the idea. Never played a game quite like this, but I assumed it'd fulfill my tie fighter fantasy.

I'm through Mission 3 (two times each, with the gamepad and then with keyboard/mouse) and here's my thoughts:

First things first. As others have said, do yourself a favor and forget about playing with a gamepad. Keyboard and mouse works so much better for targeting and I honestly feel the movement is less cumbersome as well. It was night and day difficulty wise for me when you compare the two. I'm far from even remotely good at this game (or any other kind of shooter) but my accuracy went from 20% to 40-50% by swapping. It didn't trivialize the difficulty for me, it just made things achievable without me wanting to bash my face into the screen.

I haven't had any issues with performance. No crashes, no bugs encountered that I know of.

I know the camp is split here in the thread about the graphics being great for this, or crappy. I actually like the look of everything and the backdrops really make things beautiful as you blow shit up. The ship's designs aren't exactly fantastic, but honestly I am not concerned in the least and I don't get the feeling that they were meant to be.

The jet fighting is awesome for me, but yes, for some I could see that it would be repetitive. I happen to love it and find it no different than the main mechanic in any other game...if you don't like shooting stuff with spaceships (A LOT), it might not be the game for you though.

The Strike Suit is...well, it seems fun. So far though, it has mostly caused me to get rocked repeatedly by the enemy ships. I'm still unsure about the targeting and etc, but I assume I'll get the hang of it. The power-up thing to enable it was no problem in mission three. If I was a better player I could have charged up and stayed in Strike Suit form indefinitely...problem was I couldn't keep from getting pummeled so I just darted in and out as I could (which may be the actual intention, I suppose).

All in all though, I've thoroughly enjoyed the game. I've seen reviews dinging the story, but it's not like it's the worst plot ever created. Sure it's a bit ready-made, but it's a game where you shoot things with jets and spaceship space suits, so I personally count it as a bonus more than anything. The music has been good so far, and I guess the main thing I'd like to see is already coming (mod support). Been well worth my money.

I forgot to add it in what I wrote above, but the sooner those mid level saves come the better. As a father and husband, it's kind of a requirement for playing for me.

So I was pretty hyped for the game and bought it.

I'm only into mission 2, but I felt the game wasn't very smooth, so I fired up Fraps and with everything on high, I was capped at 20fps. I turned off a couple options and went to an acceptable 30. But I feel this could be a lot smoother.

I guess we'll get improvements in the near future, but I'm a bit disappointed in the performance for now. I'm rocking a MSI GE-60 laptop, which has some nice specs. I'm on windows 8 so maybe there's something there.

Game wise, I agree with pretty much everyone that there should be more checkpoints during a mission. I'll wait to finish the game to give some impressions.

Runs at a full 60 FPS for me, but odds are my PC is a lot more powerful than your laptop. The backgrounds and particle affects are really heavy on CPU usage. Turning post-processing to low will probably help you too.

Edit:

What the fuck.

With no warning whatsoever, I go "outside the operational area" and automatically fail the mission. Holy fuck that's gay. They need to have some big ass flashing indicators or something on your screen to say HEY, I KNOW YOU'RE IN SPACE, BUT IF YOU GO ANY FURTHER YOU FAIL.

Gah. Fuck having mission limits in a space game. What is this, COD?

Edit2:

LOL. So I restart from the checkpoint, complete the mission, and the game fucking crashes when the mission ends and I lose all of my progress / don't get the next mission unlock.

Seriously, fuck this shit.

I was lucky to be a obedient little player so I didnt run into the instant kill walls but yeah, that is just wrong. Still hate what they did in Bionic Commando (2009) with a similair tactic when the game just screamed "GO ABSOLUTE NUTS, YOU GOT THE COOLEST METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION EVER!".

Also, all progress or just the mission progress?

Just finished the game - 12 hours in total clocked in on 13 missions (counting the wasted time from losing progress due to crashes too).

The 11th mission I had to repeat due to it crashing yesterday, but that one wasn't bad. Mission 12 was actually pretty fun as it was the largest scale battle yet with a ton going on and I didn't really have to babysit the ships as much (though they still had that "sweet" defend all of the ships from barrages of torpedos mechanic).

As for mission 13, terrible last mission. I'll spoiler it in case anyone is interested -
You have 10 minutes to fly through "The Relic". That's all there is to it - they take your ship and put you in narrow corridors which you have to fly through. Not only is the annoying as hell, but there's no enemies to fight at all. Once you reach the core you can either blow up the core (it shoots out light beams that can hurt you, but they're piss easy to dodge because you have unlimited flux) or you can just go and destroy the limiters.

I can see what they were going for here, but it was a really lack luster ending to a lack luster game/story. My only hope is that when the mod tools are released the community will take over where the developers failed.

why does this game not have some kind of rearm feature? You *will* fail checkpoints if you are out of munitions and will be powerless to prevent that, even if earlier objectives in said mission also required those missles/rockets.

adams do this. adams do that. adams remember the bread and milk from the grocery store. adams don't forget the dry cleaning.
why is everyone else in blue in the game completely and utterly worthless. They don't even bulletsponge well.

Given my desperation for space combat games I don't want to say anything bad about the meager offerings. My review is basically:

Bring on the mods.

Welp, I've stopped playing this before going too far (wasn't the difficulty, haven't died once, just didn't have fun/wasn't entertained). Euro Truck Simulator 2 was more enticing, that should also tell you a lot...

I'm gonna have trouble believing that, unless Euro trucks shoot missile salvos.

The lack of support on mission 7 is really getting to me. I can't even get near to blowing up the fuel pods in the... 3rd part of the mission? because enemy fighters just gang rape me.

The GiantBomb Quicklook painted the game in a rather hilarious light lol. I guess If you're into trucking it's quite the complete package. Accurate simulation of what being a trucker is all about.

Holy fuck. I just went to watch that after your post and I'm fucking dying here. So hilarious lol.

Nobody wanted to trade anything for it so here's my extra SSZ Steam key, whoever grabs it, lurker or otherwise, whatever.

ERQG3-LTHYA-J9BNF

I wouldn't trust a GB quick look for anything but entertainment, they can take a top game and make it look shit by sheer (and weird, given their years of experience and how most games conform to certain cliches in gameplay and otherwise) ineptitude.

I hope you'll have fun! Go in for an obviously indie arcade space shooter, not an epic & deep space opera!

So are they actually planning on patching the end of mission crashing or have they already abandoned this?

Patch #2 was released on January 31st. They are still working on the game, but I wouldn't expect most of the severe issues with the game (such as the GUI) to get fixed right away (if at all).

Patch 2 features:

· Fuel platform containers now display correct wrecks when destroyed

· Added score to the mission select screen

· Saving the status of completed at the start of results screen in case the user shuts down the game before the results screen process has finished

· The forward and backward thrusting were not working for Mech mode when Auto aiming with gamepad. This has been fixed.

· Applied some HUD and UI alignment adjustments.

· Removed short period of gameplay between two end cutscenes at the end of mission 9

· Removing upgrade when you complete tunnel run with no limiters killed

· Fixed a crash coming out of the frigate cutscene in Mission 3

· Fixing stage 2 mission 11 - corvettes fleeing properly and squads now get clean down properly

· Health of freighters now correctly carriers over into each stage and is not reset on restart checkpoint in all stages of Mission 4

· Fixed Zfighting on the arcadia landing strip

· Control now returns to the player after the cruiser KillShot cutscene and Playable area now updates correctly when Enemy Cruiser spawns in stage 3 of Mission11

· Added missing collision to the static allied freighters and the gate tunnel in M1S3

· Removed the visible waypoint in Stage 3 of Mission 11

· All AI squads in Mission 5 that were set to defend the player are now set up to use Tethering instead (they won't keep colliding with the player)

· Updated station turret towers with matching textures and lods

· Fixed bug caused by killing cruiser before bowman arrives in Stage 4 of Mission 4

I'm interested in this game...but not so much that if the dev doesn't support it that I'd bother. More interested in getting back into Freespace 2. I'll keep an eye out for a little while longer, but I don't think I'll bite unless the major issues ppl have with SSZ are resolved.
