Stringer Sets Out Sony Vision

Delivering his keynote speech at the consumer electronics Ceatec conference in Tokyo, Sony's global boss Howard Stringer has outlined the future for Sony and for the PSP.
ImageHis speech outlined the proliferation of on-the-go entertainment and communications devices. "Dramatic change has become routine," he said, "but the experiences of today have a momentous feel."
He said his vision for Sony is "one that is streamlined in terms of product lines, manufacturing and efficiency". He said he is "expanding Sony's ability to innovate while deepening our relationship with dealers buyers and customers."
He added, "We must free ourselves from the old ways that bind us. We will triumph by building into our products sustainable competitive advantages that defy the forces of commoditization".
Stringer said he backed his R&D fully to deliver. "We have genius in our ranks, but we have fallen short with the rigorous demands of the market. We must deliver truly differentiated products."
Stringer said that PSP owners "will soon be able to deploy the device's built-in WiFi, to watch video from home entertainment terminals, anytime, anywhere in the world" adding that it will be synchronized to a user's PVR player.
On the company's troubles he said, "We must restructure to improve efficiency; sharpen to improve our focus and provide the necessary resources to create unique, competitive advantages. Large organizations must seek to become more responsive and more customer focused. We will become a more nimble, responsive and creative company with a better relationship with the public."
He said Sony's role is to create "champion integrated products with unique attributes and identities" adding that the firm has a history of "revolutionary brands that have changed consumer experiences around the world". He said the changes being wrought at Sony are "not simply a story of reductions we are determined to achieve growth in key areas, including mobile entertainment."
On PS3 he said, "It will be our biggest breakthrough yet. It plays in high definition and high drama. The Cell microprocessor really sets the PS3 apart...offering twice the processing power of Xbox 360. It's simply amazing in a home entertainment device. The PS3 is only the beginning, but it is a monumental technical advance."
