Despite Subway Improvements, Survey Shows Riders Still Aren't Impressed

August 05, 2005

Despite billions spent on ultramodern trains, renovated subway stations and improved service, New York City straphangers appear no more pleased with the subways than they were a decade ago.

Those are the results of this year's Metropolitan Transportation Authority rider survey, according to Newsday. The MTA commissioners the survey each year to gauge rider satisfaction.

This year's survey finds that riders on average rate the subway system a 6.1 out of 10 - the same as in 1994.

The findings are discouraging to some transit officials – and even some transit advocates who are often critical of the agency – because over the last decade, the MTA has lowered the number of breakdowns, increased on-time service, and spent billions on equipment.

One of the problems most cited by riders surveyed is overcrowding.

As for the individual lines, riders rate the 1 line as the best and the crowded 5 line the worst.

The 6.1 overall rating is still a vast improvement over 1984, when subway riders gave the system an overall rating of 3.5.

You dont take the subway because you like it, you take it because you have to.

Did they really need a survey to learn that?
