Study: Using AI reduces Cognitive Activity

Participants were divided into three groups: LLM, Search Engine, and Brain-only (no tools). Each completed three sessions under the same condition. In a fourth session, LLM users were reassigned to Brain-only group (LLM-to-Brain), and Brain-only users were reassigned to LLM condition (Brain-to-LLM). A total of 54 participants took part in Sessions 1-3, with 18 completing session 4. We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess cognitive load during essay writing, and analyzed essays using NLP, as well as scoring essays with the help from human teachers and an AI judge.
EEG revealed significant differences in brain connectivity: Brain-only participants exhibited the strongest, most distributed networks; Search Engine users showed moderate engagement; and LLM users displayed the weakest connectivity. Cognitive activity scaled down in relation to external tool use. In session 4, LLM-to-Brain participants showed reduced alpha and beta connectivity, indicating under-engagement.
Self-reported ownership of essays was the lowest in the LLM group and the highest in the Brain-only group. LLM users also struggled to accurately quote their own work. While LLMs offer immediate convenience, our findings highlight potential cognitive costs. Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels.
So not only do we have peoples attention spans shot to shit thanks to the likes of TikTok, etc, but now thanks to AI we're also lowering our own cognitive activity! We're heading for the WALL-E timeline.

edit: The full study PDF is a lot more detailed too and worth checking out...
However, this convenience came at a cognitive cost, diminishing users'inclination to critically evaluate the LLM's output or "opinions" (probabilistic answers based onthe training datasets). This highlights a concerning evolution of the 'echo chamber' effect: ratherthan disappearing, it has adapted to shape user exposure through algorithmically curatedcontent. What is ranked as "top" is ultimately influenced by the priorities of the LLM'sshareholders

I've seen people basically lose the ability to write an email on their own. They're just so used to having ChatGPT do it for them. It is kind of worrying to see how quickly people have developed a reliance on it.

So do video games and alcohol. But here we are.

On the contrary, videogames aren't pasive, they demand your brain reaction, and that's why some are beneficial to elder people. Browsing and swiping left on social media, though, makes you a monkey.

A big drop off was when smart phones became wide spread. Children school scores dropped off big time, a lot are dumb as bricks now.

No wonder in Asia they are already taking measures against it. The human body must work out or else it becomes a blob, brain included. In some schools in my country they are removing tablets and smartphones too, they realized it's a big problem. Kids should be playing with actual toys that improve their imagination, not electronic devices.

The number of younger people at work that are helpless when they hit the wrong button on the cash register and can't subtract 30 cents from a dollar on their own is baffling.

I know you're talking about kids, but I use ChatGPT daily in creative ways to solve problems at my job and I've never been this imaginative before.

When I see a new problem, I expect ChatGPT to have a solution and it usually does. It has automated so many of my team's daily tasks and other things that took a long time to complete.

For example: it has built an Excel sheet where I can put more 3000 invoices for payment, and it generates a .txt file that I can send to the bank instead of inputing each payment by hand, as we used to do.

And its not like it just gives me the answer. Based on his answers, I read the documentation and build the sheet with the correct formulas. I honestly think I've learned something in the process.

With ChatGPT I believe I've gotten more knowledgeable (on a superficial level) about tons of topics that I would have never known about otherwise.

But yeah, its a tool that can be used by idiots for idiotic stuff, of course.

But Socrates had a quote where he was angry at the younger generation!

This gen is fucking cooked. Dumb asses don't know how to read and use Ai for all their essays. Wow, you just played yourselves by not liking school.

Big blame goes on millennial parents. I'm a millennial without kids and the throw an iPad in front of a kid has been their mantra for boredom and crying. Pathetic

Most modern video games rely on quick stimulus-response patterns.

You get a visual prompt or sound cue. You press a button.

This kind of interaction can improve certain skills such as hand-eye coordination or spatial visualization. But these benefits can come at the cost of reduced deep processing skills.

In most modern games, you don't need to reflect, analyze, or plan long term. You just react.

This means that your ability to think critically, make connections, and retain complex information can suffer over time. You will get worse at learning, reading, problem-solving, etc. Basically anything that requires sustained attention.

See:
Yang et al. 2023 "Relations between Video Game Engagement and Social Development in Children"
Buelow et al. 20214 "The influence of video games on executive functions in college students"

There was a another study I read on that topic during my university days but I can't remember its name.

The video game industry is a billion dollar business. The giant corporations involved have deep financial stakes in maintaining a positive public image of gaming. It's only natural that we see positive findings on this topic getting amplified or exaggerated with marketing money.

On the other side, there are billion dollar corporations that would benefit immensely if the AI hype train slows down. If you read news, always ask yourself who might benefit from it.

I use AI every day at my job. play videogames every day, and drink alcohol to intoxication at least once a week and I just got promoted to manager at my office.

the more alarming thing is people already treat what it says as gospel truth.

People do that with books and TV news too.

The studies I listed above: was I part of them? No. I can only decide if I want to believe in them or not. But it could be complete bs and I have no chance to find out.

It depends on how you use it; you shouldn't rely on these programs.

But I can say that there are things that make people stupid and dumb... Like See Shows like Friends or Duck Dynasty...

Those do make people stupid.

This study shows short-term cognitive load, not long-term learning. Using a calculator doesn't mean we forget how to do math — it's about how we use the tool. LLMs can help thinking if used the right way. Blaming the tool instead of the habits is missing the point.

Thanks, ChatGepetto, now I can feel good again about not thinking!

Yes every time you rely one something else to help you get an answer or do work for you then you lose abilities you have developed or you fail to develop them. You have to work to increase or achieve anything.

Hardly surprising; if you rely on something to think and work for you, you'll get worse at thinking and working.
People who rely on it for everything are weak minded and lazy.

Tbf, have you seen the amount of people who couldn't write emails before this? Fucked up punctuation, zero punctuation, egregiously misspelled words..

I downloaded Bumble or something the other day & it offers to write your DMs for you. I miss 2019.

Meanwhile in America, TikTok gets banned for a day and everyone has a meltdown

I'd say duh, but then somebody would promptly "ackchually" me with some AI-written essay "proving" the contrary.

Good, now it knows where every penny of your company goes and how to steal it :D
