Subsidized Caffeine

Hello. My first thread post here. I've been a lurker for over a decade. I've had this subject on my mind for a week now but didn't have thread creation privileges. Why do many (American anyway) companies (mine included) give away free coffee? Ive always just excepted it and never questioned it. Now it's got me wondering, why not soda, and diet soda? Why coffee and all that goes with it, creamer, sugar, no calorie sweetener. Surely a soda fountain can run and supply the same amount of beverage for a fraction of the cost.

Because coffee is the socially accepted addiction. Soda makes you fat and doesn't have that much caffeine compared to coffee anyway.

I guess. That's why I also threw in diet soda. I feel this is in the same realm of those who smoke, get longer and more frequent breaks and is never questioned.

Maybe it's my subconscious rage seeing people drink coffee (I hate coffee, all forms) for free, while I pay for my Caffeine at a premium since all the 50 cent vending machines are empty at my workplace.

I drink coffee every morning. It's a common ritual for many. Drinking a cup or two of black coffee per day is fine. You can't say the same about soda, or even "diet" soda. I only drink soda if I'm eating fast-food, or at a party, or something like that. I probably drink soda 1-3 times a month, and I don't feel good afterwards. It's a different caffeine buzz. Coffee is an entirely different, and IMO healthier, way to consume caffeine. Coffee is pretty much just hot water with some ground up seeds. It can be dirt cheap to supply, and you can make your own. Soda is mostly just sugar and syrup, which takes a lot more processing and packaging power - nobody makes soda at home, and it's a lot more expensive than the cheapest coffee grounds.

I guess all I have left for an answer is, jealously on my part. The more you know.

I'll quickly post here it's all they can do but you look around and what else is free? Water, which is worse to coffee in most eyes. Tea is higher rated than coffee imho.

You must have never visited any tech companies. Many of them have fridges full of free soda everywhere.

Coffee is slower to drink and actually has an effect on mood and productivity. There's a feeling of sophistication to be seen drinking it. Who wants people burping from soda in an office space and be perceived as manchildren?

It's totally different, doesn't cost much to hook people with caffeine, they are expecting good returns for the gesture.
Soda is just sugar (a lot of it), coffee gives you euphoria, get's you going, it's like a drug.
Like it's late at night and i'm thinking about my cup in the morning (that fucking serious)

Well I hate your stupid fucking username but you don't see me complaining.
Mission uh, accomplished then I guess. I just know one of you fucks seen my username under your post of people who liked something you said, clicked on it and seen it was just me, and not actually 3 individual people, you fucking ego maniacs! ;)

I respect your commitment.

Coffee actually has benefits if you don't drink gallons of it. Soda, although some taste good, it's like drinking massive amounts of sugar. No benefit at all and you'll look like a pork at the end of the day. Thank goodness I only drink soda like twice a month. I would probably look like an elephant if I drank it regularly.

Preach

A friend from my college days actively eschewed Tea and Coffee in favour of a steady intake of Coke and Dr Pepper for many years and completely ballooned up to Falstaffian proportions. A few recent health scares and some fairly blunt diagnosis from his Doctor seems to have put him straight on matters and he's finally set aside the sugared water once and for all, but I honestly think he's done too much compound damage to his body over the years to ever fully recover.

I went from working for a company that only offered coffee, water, and popcorn to one that offers a fully stocked kitchen.

I might be spoiled, but I might pass on a job that doesn't either let me work from home most days or offer a fully stocked kitchen among other comforts. My days of sitting in an uncomfortable work environment feeling hungry or trapped/uninspired are over. I'm there to do good work, not suffer.

Not sure if posted already but coffee is healthy as well in moderation since it contains nutrients and antioxidants, it is believed that it can help with keeping your liver healthy and decrease your chance of getting Alzheimer's. Plus the benefits of caffeine which offers its own perks.

I guess I don't see the connection?

Should have stuck to lurking, it suited you better.

Judging by the responses so far GAF apparently doesn't seem to be so big on the sugared water versus the accused coffee (who knew?). Yet rather than taking it on the chin, you seem more inclined to rally against it for some reason.

By that measure, my morning Monster Ultra Zero should be free since it has double the caffeine of coffee.

What Coffee exactly? Mellow Birds?

Here's how retarded I am, I actually woke up and had a pop and leftover Dominos this morning lol. But I rightfully felt like a piece of shit afterwards, I'm not drinking pop every morning when I'm at work that's crazy.

I think it's probably a lot worse for your teeth than black coffee too.

Starting the day with 2 cups of black coffee is one of the things I miss most about being able to go to work. I never realized how much I relied on it until they had us working from home.

But yeah it's the accepted productivity beverage and has a lot of caffeine per cup. Also no negative associations (some people are afraid of diet soda, sugary drinks are unquestionably bad for you, etc)
