(New York-WABC, , 2005) — Straphangers who walk from subway car to subway car, looking for a seat, could find themselves looking at a fine of $75.

The MTA plans to vote on the rule change next month.

Many straphangers have complained about the new regulations - saying people need to switch cars sometimes to find a seat or a car that has a working air conditioner in the summer.

MTA feels the new regulations will keep straphangers safe when using public transportation. A fine for car hopping, would ban riders from walking between cars. It's already illegal to ride between cars.

In recent months, there have been reports of at least four men killed when they fell between cars.

Transit officials are considering some other fines too, which could be approved by this summer.
$50 fine- For putting your feet on the seat.
$100 fine-Wearing Skates, Riding a scooter, or standing on a skateboard while on the train or on the platform.

I'm sure the NYPD would like to have a word with them about this. Sometimes people move from car to car if they just don't feel safe; furthermore, if they don't want people crossing into other cars, then they better rectify the rather consistent HVAC issues with the damned things. Maybe they can also buy some more cars to reduce the congestion, God only knows what they're doing with the money they get from the constant rate hikes.

Ever been on a downtown E during rush hour? It's the fucking POSTER CHILD for overcrowded subways.

I have been on the subway in teh summer, and if they make it where I cant go from car to car like it currently is on the Staten Island Railroad, I am gonna be pissed. I mean at least with the SIRR, when you come home late, u have to put up with Drunk idiot kids, but on the NYC subway, who the hell knows what is gonna be in the car with you. They better leave it where you can go from car to car.

Also, what if some tourist gets on the 1 train to the ferry and then they realize they need to be in the first 5 cars, is the train going to stop at a station and let everyone get off and walk to the front 5 cars and then get back on, and then start the trip again??? I doubt it.

Nothing good can come of this.

To be fair, it's mostly because if a single, solitary snowflake falls on MTA tracks the switches go all apeshit and malfunction. Thus, causing them to shut nearly everything down until it's repaired.

I'm boggled that a railroad system situated in the northeast can't handle cold weather.

I hate that first 5 car BS. I still don't know how you are supposed to know what car you are in. And it scares me to death to transfer from car to car. But I see pros that swing like idiots and act like it's nothing going from car to car.

They already do this in Chicago. I forget how much the fine is though. I've only seen someone busted for it once- and the dumb part is that the train was still in the station, they could've just walked out of the one car and in to the next via the platform!

If you want to get over that fear of being locked between cars, just do what I do, and what every other straphanger does now, when they open one door, hold it open until you open the other door, then let go and walk through...

Also, isnt there a Straphangers Assoc.? Who always fight the MTA on these things? Where are they during all this?
