Suddenly, I can no longer connect to PSN on my PS4 or on Xbox Live with my XB1

Everything was fine yesterday. The only thing that changed was we got a new roommate, and he brought his stuff with him, but no internet settings or connection equipment was changed or anything.

The thing is, it's picking up my router, the PS4 or XB1 just can't connect to it. It grabs an IP address and then fails to connect. Under network settings, I see all the information. IP address, default gateway, etc.

However, those things don't match up with the stuff that comes up on my computer. Is this an IP address issue? Something to do with ipv6 vs ipv4?

When I turn on my PS4 for example, it doesn't say right away "no connection found" it just hangs and hangs and the loading circle spins and spins below all my menu blocks. So it finds the router, something is just preventing it from connecting. It was all fine last night and earlier this afternoon. Then my roommate moved in. Not sure if that's a coincidence or not, but we didn't alter anything.

Any help?

Saw your other thread in OT, make sure you aren't coming to an IP connection limit in your router's DHCP settings. Routers generally default to a pretty large number like 50 or 100, but it wouldn't hurt to double check.

Another thing you can test is to manually enter your PS4 or XB1's network settings to something that you know will work on your network and see if that allows them to connect to the internet. Manually set the IP address and gateway (your router's) address, then for the DNS use Google's: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4

How would I go about checking that? I haven't been able to connect to my router, the typical linksys address no longer works for me :(

Yeah, I was about to suggest the maximum number of users, but wouldn't his console already be connected. They wouldn't be "bumped" off, would they?

I'd try doing the DHCP reservation thing and manually setting their IP addresses first, I think.

Have you tried turning it off and on again (the router)?

Also what IP are your devices pulling vs the subnet of your router?

Wireless or wired?

Does your room mate have game systems also? Playing at the same Time?

I unplugged and replugged the router back in 5 times. That usually fixes any connection issues I have, but it hasn't worked for this issue.

The PS4's are wireless. My computers are pulling IPv6 addresses and the default gateway is not the usual 192.168.1.1 that linksys routers have. When I type that in an address bar on my PC it won't connect.

On the PS4 when I find my router on the wi-fi and hit details, it shows 192.168.1.1 and all the usual stuff. I guess the differences there are all IPv6 and IPv4.

We haven't been playing at the same time, but he actually came upstairs and was able to connect his PS4 wirelessly, but I still can't... so weird and frustrating.

First try ethernet if possible to eliminate the type of connection as an issue.

You should probably also hard reset your router to default settings. Should be a button on the back. Do that before messing with address or other concerns.

We have a similar issue in my apartment of 4. Only 3 of us at 1 time can have a wired connection. The device could have been bumped off it the roommate who moved in yesterday plugged his device in while the OP had his device off. That's what happens to my PC when it's off and my roommates want to plug in their PS4s. My computer loses privilege as a useable device on the router. We have never found a solution and just juggle who all gets a connection. On my computer it always stalls at trying to recognize the device if the other 3 guys in the apartment are connected. I have to unplug 1 of them for my computer to be recognized.

I just went through this with C-aspire about a week ago, where the Internet would work fine but it was impossible to consistently connect to Xbox live or PSN. Apparently, an upgrade had been rolled out and a lot of people in my area were having problems connecting to secure sights and services. Technicians had to come out and replace the modem with an upgraded version.

Not too sure what's going on in your case, but if the issue suddenly, inexplicably appeared and no amount of router troubleshooting seems to fix it, you might want to call your service provider and see if it's a similar situation with security issues.

Any particular reason you are running IPv6 In the home?

I didn't choose it, it just happened that way on its own. Is that odd?

Yes,I'm in the bed and can't check but I don't even think PS4 supports IPv6.

And you said you can't get into your routers admin console?

You may need to physically factory reset it

What's your wireless router model?

Yeah, I'm gonna try that. The router is in my roommate's room and he might be sleeping right now. If he is, I'll wait until the morning and do it then. Hope you guys don't mind me bumping this up if so.

Thanks! I'll reset the router next chance I get!

Your roommate got into your router and changed settings. That's why you can't get into it. If you have a pc connected

Run cmd then type ipcofig /all

The gateway is the address to change settings on linksys it should be 192.168.1.1 by default.

One you factory reset it go into the admin settings and change the default password to something only you know.

I think the router you have is pretty old by now. Could be failing, but I would bet money on someone changing settings.

He didn't do that he is clueless with computers he doesn't even know what a router is. That I know for certain. He's not the type to do that anyway, he's like the nicest guy you'll ever meet.

He's asleep, I'll try to restore to factory settings and if worst comes to worst, but a new and better router. Any recommendations for under $100?

Also, my modem apparently doubles as a router in itself, but I can't connect to that either. Any chance the signals together are causing an issue from both routers?

I would try from cmd prompt on your computer:
ipconfig /all
To verify what your default gateway is set to and try to connect to that.
If it does show 192.168.1.1 and you can ping out to google.com and your loopback address (128.0.0.1) then I would try an:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Again from cmd prompt. Then if that still doesn't fix it I would hard reset your router and check for any firmware updates for it. Also check your modem if they are separate.

Knowing what the model numbers are for both would help with the troubleshooting. On some routers they have built in batteries which means just unplugging them and plugging them back in without waiting 5 mins won't actually do anything.

If your modem also doubles as a router that means you have a gateway. So you would need to check that to see if any settings changed. Remove the router completely from your network and run everything through the gateway and try to connect to 192.168.1.1

My default gateway doesn't show that, it shows something else.

Sorry, edit, posted wrong info originally.

Best to keep them separate. But yea the one you have is pretty old.

Check cables, maybe he unplugged something or plugged it back in to the wrong port.

This actually sounds like it might be a DHCP lease issue. That's basically the amount of time an IP address is given and then reserved for a connected device. If the lease times are long (in your case, say, a few days), and a lot of different devices were connected recently, then the router would actually run out of IPs to give to network clients. This would explain why you can't seem to join the network anymore.

The best way to test this is to give one of your devices, maybe your PS4, a static IP address, subnet mask, and set the router's address as the gateway. If you connect after that, then it's definitely DHCP.

If not and you still can't connect, then something might be up with the router. As others have stated, that thing is ooooold. Being 802.11g, over wireless, you're being limited to no more over 30 Mbps; real world speed might be even lower since 2.4 Ghz is usually congested to hell.

More than anything, I highly recommend buying a new router in general, for far better wi-fi performance.

Get a switch, dude.

@ OP too - increase your DHCP range and decrease your DHCP lease time.

Also, go to your local store and buy a more expensive router haha. Get one of the newer Linksys ones.

I connected everything directly to my modem's built in router and I am able to connect with everything again. So far so good. Ditching the Linksys entirely.

I'm going to buy a new router though if this starts giving me trouble.

Thanks for the help everyone :)
