Suffer from Spots / Acne? A new treatment is working for me...

I'll give you a little history of my acne / spots before I get down to the nitty gritty.

I had flawless skin until I was 14. Then practically overnight I had a massive sprouting of huge acne spots around the cheek - within the week it had spread all over face and chin. Next couple of years were absoloute agony...of wearing huge coats with giant collars in the middle of summer so no-one would see my face ect.

Ruined the later years of school, affected my confidence and cost me several jobs because I was so ashamed of myself. One working for ITN news company in London, where I was so wracked over looking so ugly I quit after two weeks.

From later school years I had all the treatments. Peroxide Creams, anti-biotics, differin, gels and then the atom bomb of treatments. Accutane. Accutane made a big difference around my early 20's. But still wasn't a total solution - while my spots never quite came back as bad (accutane doesn't cure the problem - it's just designed to shrink the pores (which will recover) in the hope that when the effect wears off, your body will have naturally settled down to normal), the greasy skin did, which while not casusing such horrible spots, resulted in a reddy rashy look to my face which caused me lots of grief.

Back around 2000 when my skin was getting shitty again, I managed to get hold of some black market accutane from the internet which cost a fortune (NHS health service in the UK refused to give me it normally because of the high cost), again it staved off the problem until 2004 where my skin started it's usual grease reproduction.

Again I searched out another dose of accutane on the Internet. But while I was searching I came across this site:-

http://www.oratin.com/

Sent off for one of their 1 month supply of the capsules expecting another usual load of hyperbole non-results.

But fuck me...it actually works!

Within two weeks skin was dryer. Been using it for about a month and my skin hasn't looked this good in YEARS! And believe me, I've tried everything. Not sure how effective it would be for full-blown teenage acne, but if like me your in your older years and still suffer from mild to moderate spots / greasy skin, it's a bloody godsend!

I'd definitely try it, only whatever I've been doing recently sure does work because my back is spot-free for the first time in god knows how long (although the past few months it's been a lot better).

It does make sense to use something that actually treats the source instead of just treating the top of the skin, though.

I might recommend it to a friend, who was recently just screwed over by the Proactiv stuff. She said it just dried out her face to the point where she had to stop using it (actual skin peeling off dry). Who'd have thought Jessica Simpson would be so unreliable?
Is ORATIN safe ? Possible Side effects?

Oratin is an all-natural proprietary formulation. Due to our combination of safe, natural ingredients, Oratin users endure little to no side effects.

Gosh it gets on my nerves when people answer "Is it safe? with "It's natural!"

There's plenty of natural things that will totally fuck you up.

"chemical free" is a phrase that pisses me off since everything's made up of chemical.

I never really had bad acne, but at 25, I always have like 1 or 2 visible red pimples popping up from somewhere, if I have OK skin, is there some treatment that will make the problem disappear for good or is it an ongoing treatment?

I don't have bad acne or anything, though I break out with a pimple every now and then, always due to stress.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the scars? There's a bunch of black spots on my forehead now (unlike my avatar, which was taken before seeing RotK at midnight :p).

Accutane/Ro-accutane, or what ever they're calling it now days, just isn't worth the risk of the 12 years (and counting) mindfuck -especially when you realise that didn't realise your mind was being fucked and everything you experienced seemed 'normal'.

...

30% of the patients experienced increased bowel movements

30%, i don't like those odds

I did a little research and as it turns out this is highly unlikely to help in acne, i believe it was just a coincidence and your acne just wore off at the time you were using it.
It is essentially a laxative.

Glucomannan is a calorie-free natural dietary fiber that may provide benefits for cholesterol, weight management, diabetes, and digestive health, according to studies. Glucomannan is a gentle and effective natural laxative that promotes healthy colon function, including relief from constipation and diverticulitis.

Derived from the konjac root, glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber considered to be a “bulk-forming laxative.” This means that it results in a larger and bulkier stool that can pass through the colon with less difficulty and straining. In a study published in 1989 in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, certain bulk-forming laxatives, including glucomannan, were shown to generally help produce a bowel movement within a 12 to 24-hour time period.

Glucomannan acts as a prevention of chronic disease and a weight control agent. As a diet aid, it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water.

I guess I was lucky. I've been off accutane for over 2 years and still doing well. My skin isn't perfect (I get the occasional zit from time to time, but it goes away pretty fast) but I have to say I haven't had a relapse. I guess I grew out of it finally.

I can definitely relate to the pyschological effects of acne - I got hit with cystic acne pretty bad in my later teens, but accutane cleared it up shockingly well.

I just found this thing last week: www.acne.org

It's called "Dan's Regimen", and it actually works. The key is to use LOTS of 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide instead of 10%. The 2.5% works just as well, and you can put much more on your face without having it dry out. I've only been trying it for a week (with a Purpose cleanser, Neutrogena "On the Spot" 2.5% B. Peroxide, and Purpose moisturizer) and I've already seen really good improvements. Be sure to watch the videos on his website too; washing your face properly sounds simple, but watching how to do it properly is really useful.

Also, I take 50mg of Zinc and lots of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids everyday. They help out a lot "from the inside".

I'm using Proactiv right now.

Me too! This stuff has worked wonders for me. I'm one of those people that spent $500 on a dermatologist in HS and saw no results. Suddenly, this stuff my mom bought for me off of tv actually works.

Most people I've known who have tried Proactiv and seen no results are the people who haven't really followed through with it. You need to use every item in order in the morning and at night for at least 3 weeks to see any real results. Another problem is that if you discontinue using it for more than a day or two, you'll get acne again. I didn't use my Proactiv one weekend and sure enough, the next week I had a few pimples (although much smaller than what I was dealing with in HS). I've tried switching to Oil of Olay and similar brands of mimic cleanser, toner, etc. sets, but I never get the same results either. I'm really happy with Proactiv; I'm just worried about how it works so well. LOL

It's not the cleanser or toner that makes the difference- it's the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide. Neutrogena "Acne on the Spot" and the Proactiv stuff are pretty much the only 2.5% products out there. All the rest is "Maximum strength" 10% crap that screws up your skin.

I think it is everything (the cleanser and toner) that works, because I've used just the cleanser before and still gotten acne. Unless you mean that the cleanser and toner both combine to result in 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide? I don't know anything about how it works -- only what works for me.

Although, if there's anything cheaper out there to try that you'd recommend, I wouldn't hesitate in trying it out. I'm always trying new stuff to see if I can get the same or better results. When I try switching to something else from Proactive, I use it for 3+ weeks before I really know that it isn't working for me.

The funny thing is that the Oil of Olay cleansers, toners, etc. for acen treatment were the most expensive for me, but didn't work worth a damn. I was pretty dissapointed. =\

Damnit Cockles, I need before and after pictures before I drop 50 bucks on this shit. :lol

My skin is actually pretty good now, never had full blown acne, just stages where I'd have more breakouts than usual. At the moment I've been ill with a fever and I noticed today in the mirror I'm 100% breakout free. Huzzah.

My sister on the otherhand has been getting acne since she was 15, now that she's 19 it's gotten better but she still gets them around her forehead. If this stuff actually works, I'll buy her some.

Proactiv works geat for me. I'm not on the full treatment though...just the anti blemish cream ( damn expensive!). How do you guys actually deal with scarring? I've got several scars which won't go away. I'm assuming normal pimple cream does not do the trick ?

If you're looking for something cheaper than ProActiv, there are proactive knockoff products at Walgreens for half the price of proactiv. One of them is called Acne Free, for 19.95. Good shit. They're pretty much the same as Proactiv, btw.

It would make sense that this supplement would work because constipation is a large part of acne. I read a book by a dermatologist who claimed that he never found one patient with acne who wasn't also medically constipated.

Part of the doctor's regime was to take Psyillium Husks every day to make sure the patient had regular bowel movements at least once daily.

Taking Metamucil might be just as effective as this $50 per month supplement. You can also buy the specific ingrediant in this supplement, Glucomannan, at any grocery store for about $7 a bottle. I'd try that before spending so much on this product. The other ingrediants are minerals, etc you should be getting in most any daily multi-vitamin you take.

Well it's the dryer skin that's the bonus for me.

At the end of the day I believe in what I see, hear and touch.

And where as getting up for work at 7.30 am my skin would be all greasy around 11.00 / 12.00am, it happens much later now...around 5.00 / 6.00 pm in evening. Result!

I was just thinking about trying Proactiv myself.

There's a Proactiv booth in the mall I work at. $66 for a 2 month starter kit wo/ the moisturizer and $106 for the kit w/ the moisturizer. Is it really worth spending an extra $40 on?

There's also a 60 day money back garruntee, so there's really nothing to lose.

Be careful with ProActiv. It is definitely very harsh stuff for your skin. I tried it a few years ago and my face got all red and dry from it. I shedded like crazy and it started to sting really badly every time I used it.

Retin-A supposedly works well for acne (never used it), but you need a prescription for it. It's also FDA approved to remove fine lines/wrinkles. I'm currently on Renova (a lighter version of Retin-A with a moisturizing base) for uneven skin/age spots (gets rid of fine lines also), which you start getting at my age 8(

Is this stuff worth taking if you're 25 and just have 2-3 spots popping up now and then? When I was younger I had more problems.

Maybe I should try this stuff. All of a sudden my back has fucking broken out worse than ever. I'm not gonna be able to go to the beach like this, it's fucking terrible. I took Accutane a few years back, and it helped a lot, but didn't clear it up completely, and it came back. I started to take it again, but I started doing bad in school, and my parents blamed it on the Accutane and took me off it. I haven't been that great ever since, but my back is really pissing me off right now. It's so fucking bad goddamn it.

I'm totally serious about the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide. It's what Proactiv uses, and that's why so many people have good results from it. You can use a variety of cleansers that are store bought. The toner doesn't really do anything, and Proactiv doesn't include a moisturizer (mistake). You're just paying way too much money on something that you can find a lot cheaper.

What's also really important is HOW you wash your face. In order to do it correctly, you're going to have to set aside nearly a half hour every night and morning.

You first use a cleansing bar/wash (Purpose and Cetaphil are good ones) on your face for ONLY 10 seconds, very gently touching your skin. You then rinse, and very gently pat your skin dry with a towel.

After that, you wait 15 minutes for your skin to fully dry.

You then apply tons of the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide, barely touching your skin. Since it's 2.5% and not the eXXTREME 10% that you'll see everywhere, it won't dry out your skin very badly, and you can use more of it. It is just as effective at 2.5%.

After it's absorbed into the skin, you apply a moistureizer (again, Cetaphil and Purpose are good ones). Again, you very gently move it around on your skin until it absorbs.

It takes a lot of time and care to do correctly. But it works.

For all of you thinking about Proactiv, try this regimen. You can find bulk 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide on the internet, or you can buy Neutrogena Acne-On-the-Spot in a store. It's only $8, and you'll see a dramatic difference in two weeks.
