PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
No Bioware, no Fallout, preferably something relatively recent.
Oh yeah, and party based. I hate those solo quests.
Go!
And note I usually hate PC RPGs. I just have this odd craving for one.

So basically, you don't want anything good?

Well, I've played those already, durh.
Unless there's nothing good in the recent, party based boat. That'd suck though.

Do either Knights of the Old Republic count?

Seriously: Freedom Force.

Is Third Reich really that much of an improvement? I was all hyped up for the original but it failed to please.

That new Vampire: The Masquarade game, how is it? I've got an itch for modern day fantasy, but super heroes aren't satisfying my urges.

If you liked Deus Ex, and have the computer to run it, its a no brainer IMO.
Its less shooter then Deus Ex though. But its still First Person.

DE ran fine on my P4 2.5 GHz and Geforce MX400 with 512 MB of ram. if you've got anything made in the last three or four years it should do fine, I wager

Since i've been out of the PC bidness for so long, I have no idea what's what.
I have something a friend slapped together for me to play WoW on, 2GHz 512 RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti 4200.
Does the vid card cut the mustard?

And I was talking about Vamp: bloodlines not DE haha. I've played through DE a lot.

I'm going to break your rules just to e-plead with you to give Planescape Torment a chance. It has the greatest storyline ever written for a videogame, and the "script" is actually legitimately brilliant.

Couldn't get past the god awful interface. And from the intro it would have to go a long way to have a brilliant story line.
Of course, I'm not saying it doesn't. But the intro was groan inducing.

Plus, I said recent because I don't want to go on a wild goose chase for the game.

Also, I grew to hate Torment before the fucker was even released because every time I installed Baldur's Gate you had to sit through the preview clip for Torment, and by the end of seeing it like 10 times (I was having PC issues, haha) I just had a personal vendetta.

Yeah, the interface could have used work.

It's all worth it, though. If by the end you weren't completely floored by the story, I'd be really shocked. But that's Planescape Torment, you gotta 'overlook' the flaws to see under the surface, because it is just so fantastic beneath.

I thought the intro was effective. Dead guy wakes up. Pretty much the perfect way to start for how the story develops.

I agree. Naturally, if you don't ever get into the story because of the clunky interface you might have the wrong impression ;)

To me, it was trying to hard. Dead guy wakes up with something inscribed into his back? Great, is he gonna be the dead version of the guy from BG and KOTOR? (Same dude, I'm pretty sure.)
I think the problem is, I go into Torment with everyone saying "IT IS GREATEST RPG EVER." so naturally, I want to hate it. Just my (fucked up) instincts.
If I had discovered it naturally like you guys had, I may even like it.

Lets not forget it's like, christ how many years old? Where the fuck would I even find it, considering it seems my roommate took his copy back when he left.

But this is kinda lame. It's the greatest RPG story, sure, to a lot of people. Because it is. But to go in wanting to hate it, well... hey. Guess everyone's different.

I'm sure you can find it cheap on ebay or something.

I can relate. I'm the same way with the Godfather (MOVIE not abortion of a game) :lol

Too bad though.

Oh very lame, I can't deny. But it's a personal problem I can't get past, like an addiction to hating things people say are the best. You explain it cause I can't, haha.

Plus, I want to edge my hunger for a PC RPG NOW. So I think I'm gonna go to Walmart and pick up Vampire if they have it. Since, all other stores are closed now. Mother fuckers and their going home at 9...

What is this instinct? When someone says best [something] ever, I actually open my heart even more! OPEN MY HEART TO THE LIGHT!

It's not just "best thing ever" because it doesn't bother me on most things. I can usually watch a movie or a TV show based on the recommendations. Even some games.
But some shows, some movies, some games, I just hear so much praise, I can't help but want to hate them.

You should give it another shot. Like Amir0x said the story is really, really well done and the plot does start to pick up once you get out of the morgue and start learning more about your past.

Although if you prefer RPGs with a strict combat focus (and since you're a DQ fan that may be the case) Torment might not be your cup of tea. Torment has a shitload of dialogue (I spent at least an hour talking to one major npc) and there really isn't a whole lot of combat in comparison. If you do go back and play it pump up your wisdom, intelligence, and charisma first and foremost. The game really caters to those attributes and you'll get more enjoyment out of the story if you have really high wisdom and intelligence.

Have you tried either of the Icewind Dale games? Arcanum?

I dunno, I don't hate the Godfather. I just have a severe aversion to it. It might also be that I'm not hot on melodrama and everything I've heard about the Godfather smacks me as extremely melodramatic.

Edit: Yeah, Torment just isn't the same if you aren't hopped up on Wisdom Charisma and Intelligence, which pushes you to being a mage character to get the most out of the game.

I tried Arcanum but didn't like it at all. Maybe because it was too 'loose' for the lack of a better world. It just wasn't focused at all gameplay wise, and the dialouge was just not up to snuff due to it being such a wide open world.

Does the story pick up after the Hive in Planescape? The first time I tried playing, I lost patience in the Monastery. Then I tried it again; I did a shitload of quests in the Hive, and I found Pharod and all that, and then I lost patience again. The story seems to be the "nameless one" running around asking questions and getting philosophical with people, GROANNNNN. Do the party members even talk to each other? It seems that they're only there so that the nameless one can get philosophical with them as well. Is there more to the story than just running around and asking questions?

Fuck Walmart. Haha.
Oh well, I guess I'll just wait for my DQ4 Remix to come in the mail. Not like I don't have stacks of other games to play. Sucks my roommate took Torment back though, I could have at least fucked around with that.

This was my experience as well.

There are some stores that sell Planescape Torment and another game (forget which) as a double pack in the value section. I know Fry's does.

Are there no turn-based final fantasy-type RPG's on PC?
FFVII was probably the last one. :p Oh, wait, there was a port of Grandia 2.

And yeah, I was wondering if my specs would be good enough for Vampire, not Deus Ex. Hopefully I'll be okay with the 2400+, but it sounds like I'll definitely need to upgrade to 1GB RAM. The game's a pig.

"Are there no turn-based final fantasy-type RPG's on PC?"

Um...Temple of Elemental Evil. And technically, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale *are* turn based.

If you want relatively recent, and party based, go with Temple of Elemental Evil. Runs like crap and the story is non-existent but it meets your requirements.

I know not of these "Fry's".
I live in Rochester NY. =P

You can get FFVII and FFVIII for dirt cheap on the PC. If you can even find the game now, Grandia II is out there (still have mine), too.

Anachronox all the freaking way! One of my favorite RPG, well, i would consider it more of an adventure but its still an rpg. Fighting system isnt anything to rave about but its simply the best story/cast and weirdness i've found in a western rpg.

Meh Quake II engine. I should have said FFVI. Sprite-like.

I was replying to the OP, not you.

And for the quake2 engine, its holding its own quite nicely, its heavily modified and doesnt stop anything from drawing you into that superb universe the devs have built.

The game is buggy as all hell though. and the combat reeks. A good game though despite it's massive flaws. That's saying quite a bit. Poor Tom Hall.
