Which makes it so maddening that they'd later decide to diverge from that formula
It's perhaps that inconsistency which is most galling of all, because if they simply went with the tact of wanting to make a feature length retelling of the original Evangelion, I couldn't really complain. It would make complete sense, what with the troubles that blighted that production. And in terms of monetary gain, I couldn't see fans really grumbling at that prospect.
But as it stands, it's such an odd mishmash of old ideas done badly, and new ones (which are even worse,) that there's a weird sense of indecision that runs throughout these movies. They just don't feel cohesive. As it stands, Rebuild has squandered pretty much everything it set out to do. Well, except maybe the money part.
