Summer '25 anime discussion

Seems to me anime is finally getting back its groove and production is up. We have some decent shows this season, and I'm hooked. This is not the full list of what's available, just some stuff I'm personally interested in. Official sites are linked in the names, check the pages for an english option, or use your browser of choice to translate. Now you might be asking yourself, does he have time for all this? Shut up 🫶

Second season of Dandadan has arrived. While the animation quality seems a bit down, the plot and story remain the same. I'm excited to see what supernatural craziness they will introduce next. Probably Joe Rogan's guilty pleasure

Gachiakuta is about a boy living in a divided society. One of cleanliness and wealth, one of poverty and filth. Rudo is taught objects may have souls, and to appreciate them instead of being thrown away, but this concept has far wider implications than he can imagine
yd8UTx360mtciUs5.jpg

Kijin Gentoushou continues into summer season from the last. While a samurai hunting demons is nothing new, this show is less focused on action and has a new story every couple of episodes. It's slower paced and fine if you have spare time

Bored of zombie plots and need something different? Try Nyaight of the Living Cat (yes, I'm serious.) A terrible virus has infected our feline friends, and touching them will turn you into a cat! But do Kunagi and Kaoru have the fur-balls to defend themselves from this cute invasion?

Takopii no Genzai is one of my top contenders this season. Why? I love the dichotomy. Seems silly at first, but....goddamn. Not for the faint of heart. Unfortunately it's only scheduled for six episodes
qeP6SKHSlaLNtF68.jpg

Dainanaoji is back, and they're not slowing down on the special effects. It's a typical isekai where the protagonist becomes OP and one shots everything with magic. I wouldn't prioritize the show by any means, but it's fine. The short shorts are creeping me out though
hbKk11tJQqbD17xH.jpg

I have been waiting for another season of Sono Bisque Doll. I really like the approach this show has to cosplay and how many different things it can take to create a costume. The slice of life is good too, which balances stuff out and keeps it from getting stale

Kaiju No. Eight will air again in two days on July 19th. Solid watch, and I like the characters. Has some good mystery as well, which keeps you interested.

Shield Hero is now on its fourth season, and I'm stuck watching it. Help
rwKLricM2Tafh21Z.jpg

Witch Watch continues into this season as well. I didn't expect it to turn into a reverse harem situation, but the characters aren't bad. I file this under "cute enough"
Cg0jxvueWtI8lFZE.jpg

Clevatess hits every note of a good fantasy story. Epic beasts, powerful abilities, magic, and a child with an unknown destiny. Give it a shot
lodLpR25jiOM72V6.jpg

Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu seems like a supernatural horror type of show. A boy dies and is taken over my some weird entity. A few scenes reminded me of Paranoia Agent, so it could have potential

After many years, a new Panty & Stocking? Seems fun, why not
bI5jdSFKHlaHMx1s.jpg

There is a bunch of other isekai stuff as usual. Mokushiroku Mynoghra, Mizu Zokusei, or Jidou Hanbaiki, but it's kinda whatever. If I missed something interesting, let me know ✌️ Next few seasons also look like quite the lineup

Cool thread. I've only watched DanDaDan S2 for far, which is ok but a big downgrade in directing.

I appreciate the effort in trying to bring back seasonal anime threads

Don't forget this thread exists

I'm watching Summer Pockets

That one is continuing on from Spring though

Ah, made by Key? I'll have to give it a shot. Their work is pretty good, but I feel like watching all the episodes at your own pace instead of weekly works better for mushy stuff
Is Gahiakuta any good? My whole subway station was full of advertising for it.
I like the first two episodes so far. More interesting than the isekais at least

Feels like a 2000s manga in a bad way with the anime. Maybe the visual style of the manga can carry it but for BONES it's mediocre.

Takopi being generational to Zoomers is understandable but its not exactly fresh or new concepts, it's done well though.

Haven't seen New Panty and Stocking but weird to see people are suddenly fans of the original again. 🙄

I've been following anime seasons for a while now, and there hasn't been a show similar to this in a long time. Is there anything you like about this season so far?

I still enjoy OP isekais, probably because I'm very picky about what I watch and have only seen a handful, but the shota MC with the short shorts is a non starter for me. I could go for more Overlord and Eminence in Shadow though!

How is Shield Hero? I loved the first season but bailed after seeing the negative reception of season 2.

I've only watched that comedy detective show so far which seems good enough. Not really interested in most of the other stuff.
Could never get into that bisque doll show. From the first half of the first season it seemed like they should already be dating, and the rest of the show just felt like it was trying to drag it on without having them be in a relationship. Can't get into Dandadan either, though I understand why people like it.

It follows a very similar roadmap that SAO put in place.

Stellar first season, giant dropoff afterwards.

I'll give Shield Hero credit at least for sticking to it's genre post-dropoff rather than becoming part-slice of life/part-harem/part-action like SAO.

I mean the manga was gassed like crazy so it was always gonna be massive with a decent studio.

Nothing I'm watching is really great neither bad really. Just sort of OK. I stopped watching a lot of seasonal anime back in like 2019 after doing it for 14 years.

Gonna give that cat zombie show a watch, seems interesting

Nothing too exciting.
Dandadan is still fun though I still think the manga is the better version to experience the story.

Checked out the first 2 episodes of Gachiakuta which were ok. Garbage is certainly a ... unique theme to base an action shonen around, but at least the second episode introduced some decent looking action. Can't say it has really grabbed my attention so far, but I'm willing to give it a few more episode before dropping it.

Also watched the first half of season 3 of Fire Force, can't believe it took like 4 years to come out. Maybe I'm miss remembering the earlier seasons but it felt like it took a notorious dip in animation quality, but the story is still pretty fun.

It's amusing. There seems to be a few animal shows each season which are a good watch with a girlfriend. Last ones I liked were Kawaisugi Crisis and Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu

I enjoy a lot of gag anime nowadays like Gintama. I really like witch watch and I started watching a pretty crazy detective one that I can't recall the name of at the moment. I'll post it later when I have a sec to search it up.

Update: the name of the show is called Detectives these days are crazy!

I need a rewatch of fire force because i can't remember shit :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I've got season 2 of I've been killing slimes to watch so looking forward to that while I wait patiently for season 2 of Bocchi the Rock and Lycoris Recoil. Also waiting for BADGIRL and Plus Sized Elf to have all episodes available before I start watching.

Of the new shows, Gachiakuta, The Summer Hikaru Died (read the first manga volume last year, enjoyed it but figured I'd wait for the anime), Secrets of the Silent Witch (seems like a fantasy anime with potential), City (the spiritual successor to Nichijou?! Yes please!), and Clevatess interest me. Maybe to Dealing with Mikadono Sisters is a Breeze.

In terms of sequels, Call of the Night coming back is pretty hype,

Vampire Shrug GIF

but even better is Grand Blue finally getting a second season! Finally, the party kids are back!

I've only read the novel and it was fantastic so I'm really interested in this anime adaptation.
Don't have time to watch it yet so no review. But the trailer looks pretty cool.

It's hard for me to get into anime mysteries unless they're a bit brutal or do time and space changes. Regular mysteries seem too....straightforward. Like they do something and explain too fast or have too much detail. No time stringing you along

Not sure about the anime but the novel has everything you want. The novel is one of the most complex world building, I doubt that the anime can cover all the details. Should just give it a try and see it for yourself.

I watched the first episode of this the other day.
I don't know if it's because I had a few beers that day or the Crunchyroll subs suck, but I found it really hard to keep up with what was going on.
It just felt like one random weird scene after another, with a super fast pace that didn't give anything room to breathe, which made it border on the nonsensical.

Is it supposed to not make sense at first, and then it slowly clicks into place?

Yeah, I rechecked because I think he mentioned this issue, but Youtuber Mother's Basement, on his seasonal video, said this show is pretty overwhelming even after three episodes with all the worldbuilding terminology it throws at you relentlessly and even the characters' powers aren't as clearly defined as one would expect by this point. He seems to still be enjoying it, but yeah, seems like it could be a lot to take in.

I will watch it eventually because for now, this is as close as to a Bloodborne anime we're getting for now.

Yeah just watched some episodes and I found that the pacing is way faster than the novel. They're throwing all the details and power at the audience without any explanation .
It's kind of hard to follow at first but I think it will get better if you keep watching.

Managed to watch Gachiakuta, Lord of Mysteries, and Tougen Anki. All off to a good start.

Sakamoto Days S2 first episode was good. Dandadan S2 I will wait for it to finish

It's probably better to stick to the novel then. Looks like it's chinese, and their style is very eccentric

Lord of Mysteries has almost 2 million words.. and thats without considering the sequel.

It doesnt surprise me that they messed up the pacing, an adaption for a book like that would probably need at least 500 x 23min episodes, considering the tense plot, in which details introduced way earlier suddenly matter in a big way or have to be looked at through a different lense due to new informationen and the many places, characters and magic concepts..

yet the first 2 episodes adapt almost 40 chapters..

Dude I just binged this show on another recommendation. I really dig it as it is so different from what I have been watching.

When the camera broke I was like holy crap this show is awesome.

This season is kinda...meh....the last time I dropped so many shows at once was the 'moe' era
so many garbage E-Tier fantasy shows
I dropped the "Gachiakuta" manga a while ago I thought it had potential but I found the plot really uninteresting

Seems like every single show I hated has a second season this season lol

Sticking with these
"The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity"
"Clevatess"
"Solo Camping for Two"
"Takopii"

and "Arknights" is actually one of the stronger shows this season....thats never a good sign

Clevatess is probably going to be the underrated one of this year. It has some dark and heavy themes in it so far with good writing and animation. Not quite Berserk-level dark, but it's up there.

One wouldn't know this at first glance because the previews make it seem like your standard fantasy anime. I happened to just give it a shot on a whim.

Might watch it when Takopi is finished tbh. I was thinking about watching New Panty and Stocking but I actually hated the original back in 2010 so...

Just to give you a heads up (because I don't know who you might watch anime in front of), expect the following as of episode 4:

Blood, gore, mutilation, coercion, slavery, (almost) nudity, and implied rape. There was probably only one goofy scene in the first episode but since then it has been very serious.

It even has an english song as it's ED, which I know might not mean much to some here, but so far in life I've noticed that anime I've watched with English OPs or EDs have a different/standout feel to them, whether that be in terms of mature content or otherwise.

Example:

been watching the cosplay dorks and also the 7th prince. loving both since I've read the manga of both already. same with the "dog" in the rain. still waiting for DanDaDan, Clevatess and Takopii to finish the season before I dive in. some of the shows I just like to binge in one setting.

I just finished takopi and I really liked it. If you want to watch something really different, you should check it out. Warning, it's pretty damn dark.

Edited to say on the opposite end of the Spectrum is, I think it is called, The Silent Witch. Pretty funny stuff.

I'm watching all bangers-

Dandadan
Ruri Rocks (about geology)
Clevatess
My Dress up Darling

Plus slowly working my way through Yuru Camp (Laid Back Camp). It is my weekend morning coffee anime relaxing show. I will be sad when I finish it.

Takopii interests me, but children or animals being harmed is not for me.

I checked out the first episode of The Summer Hikaru Died on Netflix. Overall I like the concept, vibes and visuals. Has potential if they keep the focus on the mystery and suspense and it doesn't go all in on the gay romance.

I don't think it'll go FULL gay but the signs are obviously there. I'm enjoying it more that way than how Western TV handles LGBT shit, there's some nuance to it.

I finished Takopii. Solid ending, but one part confused me a little. Summer Hikaru Died got weird recently on episode 5. The show isn't bad, but not super interesting just yet.

Water magician is turning out to be solid, but the voice actor for the main character is known for more eccentric roles, so it's hard to get into it.

Shield hero is decent so far, and so is 7th prince. Tsuyokute is fine and tugs you along. Dandadan, gachiakuta, and kaiju are solid

Yeah Japanese shows like to heavily hint at it like that. I don't mind as much with girls because it comes off kind of cute, but this...eh

Last episode of dandadan is probably my favorite so far. I'd pay for that kind of service. Kaiju 8 was nice, but there's still a lot of unanswered questions.

For you metal heads out there, that was Marty Freidman on guitar. I looked it up and was like Holy Crap! He's been living in Japan since 2004 or something. I took my wife to see Megadeath in early 2000s and Dave Mustaine did not seem like he wanted to be there.

This season is, allegedly. on fire; I'm doing my first-in-a-while check-out-a-ton-of-anime (kinda behind for checking new stuff but w/e). First episode impressions:

Clevatess: An hour-long premiere? Seemed to mostly work out. Strengths at the start are how unabashedly gruesome the action is and actually bothering doing a modicum of world building, even if it still overexplains later. Clevatess' lightning/shadow powers anyway are neat. I'm with others though and think some of the staying power here might be the bullying of the straight-laced MC. Alicia's intelligence is all over the place btw, from having the observational skills to determine Clevatess' means of attack instantly to stupidly blurting out that the royal family and only the royal family has the power to refine weapons that can injure the highest rank demons.

Gachiakuta: Very stylish, very shouneny (obv.). Not an ounce of subtlety with the trash metaphor but this one's not going for subtlety. Slow starter I think as many shounen tend to be, but there's little in the way of missteps, other than some shounensplaining and the friend turning on Rudo as soon as he's accused of murder despite how reasonable she'd seemed steadfastly defending him for others prejudging him.

Detectives These Days Are Crazy!: NGL, the main reason I watched this is because KanaHana voices the female lead and I've recently become a fan after connecting her roles and seeing how wide a range she has. The GAR Junichi Sawabe as the male lead is a bonus I learned after the fact~ Annnd that's about it. KH overacts some bits, and Sawabe's ofc a fit for grizzled, old man, and both of them are likeable enough, but the jokes are really hit-or-miss, relying on an almost non-stop barrage for engagement. Explaining them usually doesn't help. Funniest gag was the dramatic shot of of Kei eating red bean bread and drinking milk while tailing a client, for some reason. This one's really betting it all on the voices I think.

The Summer Hikaru Died: Netflix production with what they made extra clear had a ton of money behind it. First impression is that despite all that it's kinda plain. Then I drew the connection of, "Huh, this looks a lot like Fujimoto's art." Then my comparisons became less favorable lol. The first episode was boring. None of the visuals are as wildly off the wall as in a Fujimoto comic, and the many, varied (and very detailed) shots don't feel as carefully deliberated - They feel like they're aping the style without understanding what worked about it. It also was unfocused - what seemed like an establishing episode for the dynamic between the main duo then gets interrupted by some weirdo, freelance ghosthunter?

City the Animation: Slice of life from Nichijou guy, animated by KyoAni. Is everything in this show hand-drawn? Holy shit. It's really impressive. Unfortunately, like Nichijou before it, this comedy does not work for me at all. I laughed once, when the weirdo airhead talked about how sniffing ink reminded her of The Days of Her Life, but then it turned out she's just a weirdo who likes the sensations of touching things and I was dramatically less impressed.

Secrets of the Silent Witch: Gave this one a shot for the gimmick. It's definitely not a looker - bog standard look, very unremarkable dialogue and direction. The hook for me had been 'magical Bochi', but this show's not nearly as creative as Bochi. I kinda admire how explicit the show is when the fangirl ojou-sama at the end enthusiastically declares that she'll bully Bochi-lite in order to help her, but I'm not sure how long this one will fly.

Other shows I'd already been keeping up on:

Rent-A-Girlfriend S4: The trash that keeps delivering. Everyone dunking on this show is out of their minds. What makes RAG special is how clearly it's learned from old, '90s harem trash. Shows like Love Hina didn't so much keep momentum going as much as they introduced ridiculous scenarios to keep the plot moving along. Even if deliberately so, it was cheap. RAG lets the characters handle everything, even if this ends in the plot chugging along, and that's a-ok because it doesn't hold back in how terrible and self-sabotaging they can be. Plus it has an all-star cast! I was a little worried how the story would continue considering how season 3 concluded, but the author's managed to keep juggling.

My Dress Up Darling S2: I was a little worried the first couple episodes wouldn't match the excellence I remembered from season 1 - They seemed like manga chapters poorly spliced together and poorly edited for animation, but the past couple episodes have really upped the game. The madlads at Cloverworks put on an actual puppet show to explain tailoring, and it was fantastic.

Stuff I'm not watching:

Dandadan S2: S1 was a big disappointment to me. The action scenes (largely) delivered but whenever they let off the octane, the bad writing stunk. Props to the studio Science SARU which really put their back behind it imo but they could not save it from the source material. Dishonorable mention to Jin for somehow being the most obnoxious character on the show with his streamer personality we're clearly supposed to like. I didn't expect the show to top the worst Ayane Sakura character, but it succeeded.

Kaiju #8 S2: This is on the docket but I'm group-watching it and the specific permutation of available friends (when others aren't also available for other things) has not let me start yet and it's otherwise low priority for us. Not that i don't want to!
