Summer of PSN -- PSN finally getting its act together?

I personally don't mind the lack PS1/2 classics as I have hundreds of those games on disk. But Sony are losing out on fairly easy money by not releasing classics regularly - the fact that certain PSX games sell for $30+ on ebay is a testament to that.

My main demand really is In-store XMB. As a 512k user, when I background download something I invariably will get errors when I try to download anything else. Having to "exit store, pause downloads, enter store" five or six times is a hassle.

And keeping that in mind: more than 16 items on the download queue. After coming home from a 2-3 week holiday (during which E3 hit) downloading stuff from PSN almost became a full time job.

Much more in the way of third party games for the PSN, yea, the situation has improved a bit since, say, the Spring of this year, but on the whole this is an area where the PSN still lacks, and honestly getting quality 3rd party fare is the true key to sustainability.

You're missing all the best games!
Super Stardust
PJ Monsters
PJ Eden
Echochrome
Everyday Shooter

Those are just the ones I can personally vouch for.

I was about to write how surprised I was about you actually talking about something other than Japanese games/stuff, than I realized you weren't Zoe..damn names look too close :D

Sony, want to make up for that $3 billion investment? Put out all the Final Fantasys on PSN. Well, all the ones re-released on PS1, 7-9, and 10 & 12. There's going to be some massive double, triple, and quite possibly quadruple dipping by JRPG fans who are hungry for one.

All PS1 Greatest Hits should be on PSN. There's really no excuse for it at this point, although I can understand if some reprogramming is needed to make it work on PSP/PS3.

Of course, there's always legal issues, and possible royalties that get in the way.

Why would Square do that when they could repackage each game, sell it on a disk and get more money?

Oh, thought of something else, I think the PSN needs more casual fare. How about some board games, or some card games that are poker, or some of those Popcap or Gameloft games? Yea, I know it is kind of lame to suggest, but this shit is needed if Sony wants to broaden the audeince of the PSN.

One of my main gripes with PSN is the lack of good puzzle games. I'd pay good money for games like Puzzle Bobble, Lumines and Puzzle Quest (hopefully it's coming soon.)

Theres no re-programming needed. ALL PS1 games work on PS3, maybe some work needed on PSP but pretty much mostly perfect. MGS1 and FF7 run flawlessly on the system, and it seems insane that such money was left on the table at perfect tie-in times like MGS4 and Crisis Core.

I would love this. I would still be hesitant to actually subscribe until I can see that they have a good amount of content on there. Like almost netflix type content.

If they did that, you can bet your ass that I would spend an additional 15 bucks a month that I already spend to rent flicks.

PSN may not beat XBLA in terms of quantity.....but they sure compete in terms of quality. Last Guy, that game came outta nowhere, and it's a great original title. Pixeljunk series has sprung up nicely, and I really hope they do more series "episodic" like they did with Ratchet.

The lack of PSOne games on PSN in NA is a joke! It's free money SCEA! FREE! I want to give you money, you don't want it. Stop playing games with my heart!

They have no excuses, there are games that were rated by the ESRB LAST YEAR that are not on the store!

it's not free money. It costs money to hire programmer to do it.

I might buy FF8/FF9 if priced at 10 bucks each. My original discs haven't worked for years...for some reason.

If they were smart they'd do a PS1 subscription service.

Pay like $10 a month and get a new PS1 game every week. There's risk because you don't know what's coming, but then again it's $2 a game and you get to keep them.

The PSN has been ass-stomping this summer. If the stride continues through the year... damn. I may end up owning more PSN games this year than actual physical software :lol
Haha I already do :)

I'd second the number of Puzzle games, BUT the PS3 uses so much freaking power for just being on, I don't like playing them for too long as I feel like it's a waste :/

PS3 HW revision soon plz, I'll sell my 60GB and buy again~

Could prolly do the PS1 versions of 1,2,4,5 and 6 as well (and CT.) :D

the ease with which PSone games can be dumped onto PSP and played makes me think that most games can get away with very little modifcations.

DINO CRISIS 1+2 please!!!

Yeah, its amazing that Sony hasn't bitten into the Playstation double dipping as much. I mean, I fricken OWN Wild Arms on the disk and I still bought the fucker off PSN.

I just wish they'd stop trying to make me buy a PSP. I swear, the day MPO shows up in the stor... Don't do it Sony! Or the wallet gets it!

Seriously though, PS2 games. Starting with Okami. HD Shadow of the Colossus remake would be great but what's the likelihood? Also; Colony Wars, Resident Evil 1+2, MGS Integral, FFVII-IX, Alundra, Kurushi and Street Fighter Alpha 2 all need to be put up on the store asap.

Wipeout coming out sometime this year would be nice.

uh, FF7 doesn't work flawlessly here, and I'm on a launch system. Locks up during the FMV after the gas chamber.

Probably a misnomer here. You will be able to CHARGE more, but make more, I don't think so. Who has to buy the boxes, print the boxes, design new box art, deal with importing games via slow boat, print/cut/assemble manuals on 80 lb. gloss text, etc... And how about the mass duplication? If you can get it in the hands of a small team of engineers to get it working, I'm sure the costs will be cut down, and digital distro sales can move. BC:R, anyone?

I would agree if they had to do a lot of work to the game, like improved graphics and the like, but digital distro for a port job is acceptable and profitable. But maybe I'm assuming too much...

I think they have poker and it's some bullshit price like 10 dollars.

i love the psn, but ps1 titles would be awesome.

its probably the most demanded thing right now, why doesnt a person at ign or kotaku just ask sony in their next interview. they never ask the important questions. here is what it should say:

There have been many ps1 titles that have been rated by the esrb in the past year that have not made it to the ps store, any comments on when we can expect these titles or any other ps1 titles for that matter?

- More PSOne games
- Make PSP games playable on the PS3
- If they're not working on a PS2 emu, start putting patches out for individual PS2 titles + make them available for download on the same day

Otherwise just continue what they are doing in terms of PSN games.

Agree. I think downloadable games true calling has always been to fill the summer drought months with fun and new things to play and to supplement the game experiences we can get from retail.

On PSN/PS3, I would still like to see:
1) subscription service for the video store.
2) Cheaper prices on the video store
3) User ratings for games and movies and the ability to sort by them (Buy, Try, Ignore)
4) More PSone and eventually PS2 games
5) XMB access during PS1/PS2 games and disc movies
6) Media sharing and grouping for people outside of home
7) Install any full game to HDD like the 360 will be able to
8) Global availability of custom soundtracks, screen capturing and youtube support across all games.
9) More fast forward options for audio files
10) RSS and Internet radio support
11) Trophy support mandatory, if it isn't going to be already

Yes, I 'll also add:

13) Upscale PS2 games if they are to have a PSTwo Classics.
14) More PSP games
15) More video preview on the video store, a lot of movies have no previews
16) ALL movies should be available for rent, but I'll only rent them if request #1 exists
17) Option to purchase TV seasons, not just single episodes
18) Give me New Line and Touchstone tabs already, you have movies available from them, but I can't see them when I search by movie studio.
19) NBC and Universal
20) Many TV Shows are missing episodes
21) Maybe upscale PSOne games instead of just dumping an ISO file there?
22) Home
23) In BD XMB and background downloading while watching a BD.

Compared to a few months ago it's a lot better. Aside from the games I could have gotten cheaper at retail there wasn't much there for me back then (I'm not generally interested in PS1 games). However I've got a nice little collection now - nowhere near as big as my XBLA collection but there are some definite gems in there. More quirky indie games and quality remakes would make me happy.

This.

Plus: in-BD XMB and being able to sort your friends by groups..

Would definitely love to see more PS1 classics on there. But please...improve the emulation. PS1 games emulated on a PC much lower specced than the PS3 look leaps and bounds nicer than the PS3's current method of upscaling/blurring. Heck, even the Dreamcast did a much better job at emulating PS1 games than the PS3.

Lower prices in the euro lands

Why aren't theme/wallpapers all over the place? Some themes are only for download on the US store blah blah blah you know the story. Fix the euro stores.

PSN has improved greatly, mainly thanks to Siren and R&C in my opinion, two first class games. But while PSN has improved this Summer, XBLA has notched up a gear too.

Just goes to show that competition is the best thing ever! From now on until the end of the year though, my two moost anticipated downloadable games are split between both services: I can't wait for Portal: Still Alive and Wipeout HD.

Sony improved it quite a bit compared to PS3's launch.

Only things I would like are:

- Demo tab in the EU store
- Rez HD/Ikaruga/Braid/Exit/Puzzle Quest (Braid might be coming so: :D)
- EU VideoStore.

Theres only two things I like to see out PSN:

1) More Ps1 games (as many have already said)

2) Stop the stupid policy of only putting content up on Thursday. If a demo gets released on Live on Monday we have to wait four days for it. The Japanese store gets updates several times a week so why can't we.

SONY got their act together when they redesigned the PS Store, and yes there are really good games coming out on PSN now. I haven't bought anything on the Xbox Live Arcade for Ages.

been crazy good for me this past couple of weeks

QFB, PJE, TLG and now WIPEOUT HD. contemplating getting the PSN version of puzzle quest and maybe wipeout PSone now. :P For some reason, Megaman 9... well, no.

still, it REALLY is hitting its stride. I didn't include Siren because I bought the disc version but throw that in too.

and of course,
Burnout Paradise.

I literally love having the ability to jump out of the Little Big Planet Beta, into Wipeout HD, and than cruise in Burnout Paradise, and than pop in my Yakuza 2 disc. What game drought?

You can buy Puzzle Bobble 2 for PSX from the japanese psn store. It's 600 yen.

Trophies are mandatory in 2009. Due to trophy support not being added to development kits until May/June 2008, developers already got the approval from Sony to make a game on PS3 and they were not in any contract to include trophies. The most they can do now is encourage (since some games are on tight release dates). In 2009 (since most devs want their games out before the end of the year), most games aren't in a rush to get out except some FY 2008 games, so that's why it becomes mandatory in 09.

I've posted this a few times around, but this is why there are not many PS1 games in the west:

Where are all the PS1 games? We chatted with SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida about the lack of PS1 downloadable titles in America, and he admitted it frankly: "I'd like to see more games on that as well ... we haven't done enough with third party publishers."

In Japan, companies like Square Enix and Konami have supported the PSN by re-releasing treasured PS1 classics onto the PS Store. However, the rest of the world's catalog has been quite lacking. Yoshida explained that these digital downloads don't offer much profit, calling the potential monies "insignificant." He also noted that there are many issues involving licensing, especially with the music found in older games. That usually adds to the difficulty of bringing back PS1 games.

While lamenting the lack of PS1 support on the PSN, he did ask us a favor: "Maybe if you can convince the third parties."

How about making the downloadable PSP games compatible with the PS3?
There's no PSP emulator. Whether PS3 can effectively run a PSP emulator, who knows (there's no full 100% emulator on PS3 due to the difficulties working with the GS and such).

Those who might want cheaper prices on movies, that will never come for one reason. SCEA cannot price lower than what stores sell the movie for. It's a sensitive issues where retailers purpose is to sell products, and when someone can buy basically the same thing for less, that could hurt some of their business. The last thing SCEA wants to do is to anger retailers because they need them to sell PS3 consoles, games, etc. A subscription plan for video rentals might come.

Court with Japanese publishers to put games on the Japanese PSN.
