I just got an English project to do which is due Aug. 15 (yuck!). We have to read:

0316341517.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.gif

And, out of a group of 5 books I chose to read:

0618329706.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Then for some odd reason I saw this in the store and picked it up for *gasp* free time reading. Who knows if I'll ever get to it but the title was cool enough and it seemed worth a read:

Have you guys read any of these before, how were they? What do you plan on reading this summer?

I'm reading that Edith Hamilton book, as well. Every other page, I keep thinking to myself how badly it needs a rewrite.

Thus far this summer I have read:

The Teeth of the Tiger
Red Rabbit
Why the Allies won
Enemy at the Gates
The Man who was Thursday
God's Politics
Does God exist?
John Paul II (a biography)

and I'm halfway through Margaret Macmillan's Paris: 1919.

Boring night security job = lots of summer reading

Ford Prefect

GAAAAAAAAY
I just picked up some sci-fi from the library: Rendevous with Rama and Cradle both by Arthur C. Clarke and the fourth Homecoming book by Orson Scott Card.

Also I'm reading Hunter Davies's Beatles biography.

For summer reading for AP English IV, I've gotta read Great Expectations and then one other from a choice of 5 or 6 (Pride and Prejudice, Invisible Man, and Catch 22 is all I remember right now).

Haha, I've heard a whole range of opinions on this book, from very negative (omg book makes no fucking sense!) to very positive (OMG BEST BOOK EVAR).

If you have a sense of humor you will love it.

I remember I was nearly dying of laughter from the absurdity of half of the situations they came up with in the book.

I liked Mythology..had to read it for [HS] Freshman year English..

I like it an awful lot, too. I just think some of the parts of it could be structured better, the phrasing could be a lot better, more information about how culture shaped these myths/myths shaped these cultures, and a section on world mythology that does more than give a half-assed reach around of Scandinavian mythology.

You will pick Catch 22.

It only "makes no fucking sense" to those too stupid to get it.

I'm stuying investing. The first two are mine, the rest are my Dad's. I'm kind of reading bits of each.

The Millionaire Next Door
Investing for Dummies
Morningstar Guide to Mutual Funds
Financial Peace
The Intelligent Asset Allocator
Common Sense on Mutual Funds

I've never gotten around to reading the LOTR series. I may start soon.

Later this month, Harry Potter 6.

Argh, I hate stupid high school reading assignments (even though I end up loving the books most of the time). How am I supposed to read Great Expectations and one of the others (I'm going to choose between Invisible Man and Catch 22), when each are both 400+ pages by August 25th and still have time to read the new Harry Potter!?

*sigh*

Sirens of Titan
On the Road
The World is Flat
Candide

Catch-22 is highly entertaining. I was a bit thrown off initially since it's not chronological and sometimes the dialogue is repetitive, but on a whole there are way too many memorable characters (
Major M. Major, Milo
), circular logic, absurdity, and scenes to pass up.

Two 400+ page books? Piece of cake, I'd have 'em both done inside of a week. And forget Harry Potter :p

But seriously, three books before Augus 25th is child's play.

Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. My two books I have to read are about 600-800 pages in total but I'm either a slow reader or I'm too lazy. Most of the time when I read I can never pay attention to what I'm reading (maybe I just choose bad times to read). The Mythology assignment is to make a big chart or layout of each chapter (for possible mythological allusions will see throughout the year). The next assignment is to separate the other book into 6 sections and basically just say our reactions.

The assignments are hella easy but it's the reading that'll get me. You'd think by now I'd have good reading habits since my English class last year had so much reading involved. Unfortunately I only finished about 10% of those book and the other 90% I relied heavily on spark notes. I'm going to actually try to do my work this year but August 15th is going to creep up on me so fast. Not to mention I have a humungous AP Calculus project to do as well.

well, musashi is kewl

im looking for something modern really, just something good.

did you read Lucky Wander Boy by D.B. Weiss? Probably a short read, but if you have an interest in games, which you do, it combines the subject matter in an interesting way with relationships and madness. Big thumbs up.

My turn finally came up for Freakonomics at nypl.org. It seemed like it would be my book of the year until I came here and saw Sex Lives of Cannibals.

So far this summer ive read...

Excellent Book, one of my favorites. If you like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy etc etc, or a fan of intellectual history or philosphy, then you should definetely check out this book.

It was pretty good. Maybe i just wasnt in the mood for it. I was expecting something Like The Master and Margarita, but it wasnt as entertaining. It was still pretty good though

2297236.jpeg

Excellent book. I love Tolstoy

2753396.jpeg

Interesting and informative, and quite entertaining as well

And right now im reading these two books

4599146.jpeg

Beautifuly written, and some portions were just euphoric, but i dont think im a huge fan of heavily introspective works.

So far this is excellent. It reads like, and is as entertaining as a novel, while at the same time very informative about the history of intellectuals in Modern China. Great book so far.

It is great having an easy job where you can read a ton. I just hope i finish the two books im reading before Harry Potter comes out.

Anyone ever read Into the Wild? It was one of my summer books going into senior year in HS. I thought the book was extremely gripping and yet, so tragic....

so many mixed views on this book, and the kid its written about.
