Super Mario 30th Anniversary Page (JP) launched

Love the Engrish with "Super Mario Garaxy".

Odd that it's "Galaxy" once you click the SMG 1 and 2 info boxes though. Guess it's a slight oversight.

Only 17 games? Only 17 Mario platfomers?? It feels like there should be more lol... guess thats just cause Mario's name is attached to so many games in general. I've only played 8 of the ones listed with the most recent being 3D Land which was super cools. Happy 30th Mario!

Cool webpage btw!

so does this finally confirm that Yoshi's Island is not a real Super Mario game? like it's not part of the canon?
also it's pretty f***** up that they included cookie cutter trash like NSMB2 but not SM64 DS which had Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario take part in the original adventure.

Considering it's called SUPER MARIO: Yoshi's Island in Japan, I'm going to say it's an oversight on their part. ;)

(It's definitely not a Super Mario World sequel though, no matter what 1990's NoA said.)

Now they need to release a Mushroom Kingdom Historia book :D

I am so eager to play with Mario Maker, I hope they surprise us with another Mario platformer, be it 2D or 3D during the E3. I need some platforming.

Few things will ever instantly get me in good spirits like Super Mario World music. I hope it's time for some new compilations or some Virtual Console discounts.

Just noticed there are footage differences between the JP and US sites too. Compare Mario Sunshine's clipshows. They have a jump onto a tightrope that's not in the US footage, and the US footage shows Mario climbing around on a fence and flipping a panel..

This list seems like the main-line games.

No Mario Party. No Mario RPG. No Paper Mario. No Mario Kart. No non-Mario Mario Land games. No Wario. No Super Luigi U. No Yoshi. No Yoshi's Island. No Yoshi's Cookie Cutter. No Wario's Woods. No Yoshi's Safari. No Mario's Time Machine or bla bla bla.

the nsmb series may be done, but whatever new 2d platformer they make could be launching with nx next year.

2014 was the first time since 2008 without a mainline Mario game?

Holy shit.

Not necessary for me, still playing 3D World. It's truly an amazing game.

I know that in some corners of the gaming world, it's cool to hate on Mario. But yo, look at that amazing track record. SMB, SMB3, and SM64 were such leap forwards in gaming. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are of course masterpieces. And finally, IIRC, 3D World is -- still to this day -- the highest rated original (non-reissue/non-remaster) 8th generation game. (Metacritic of 93).

If you scroll through the timeline all the way to the right, there's space for two more games to be added to the timeline: Mario Maker +
Super Mario Galaxy 3?

Only one in the JP version. This is a leftover from omitting Super Mario Bros. 2 The Lost Levels.

Even so...they've listed Mario Maker on that page, but not in the timeline. So either it's going to be added to the timeline later, or there's likely another Mario game coming this year.

What's funny is, when they advertise their Mario games, it's always kids and they explain it to their parents or they'll include their dad playing now etc. When in reality, the biggest fans of these Mario games are well into their 20's, 30's and 40's. I really no longer know a single kid under 14 who still plays Nintendo games or plays a Mario game.

Crazy to think it's been 30 years, and that it's been 24-25 years since Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World for NA people. Feels like yesterday.

Yoshi's Island was left off the list last time too. I think it has more to do with the evolution flowing more naturally from Super Mario World to Super Mario 64. Yoshi's Island looks odd with its cartoonish artstyle and baby Mario.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels) is omitted from the Nintendo.com list, even though it first appeared in Super Mario Allstars in 1992, and has gotten a proper release since Wii Virtual Console.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was released in time for Super Mario Bros. 10th anniversary (JPN August 1995, NA/EU October 1995) and Nintendo Power mentioned this in their preview in volume 75

“Super Mario Bros. fans, prepare to celebrate! Mr. Miyamoto and the EAD team have worked their magic once again, just in time for the 10th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES.

They’ve created an all-new adventure for Mario and Yoshi that breaks new ground in more ways than one. It’s not only the most technologically advanced Super Mario game ever - it uses the Super FX2 chip to create amazing scalling efffects and the most gigantic enemies you’ve ever seen - it’s a treat to behold…”

The English manual has a logo that says "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island" at the top of the pages. The Japanese title was "Super Mario: Yossy Island" (or "Super Mario: Yoshi Island")

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a Mario game starring Yoshi (like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night starring Alucard instead of a Belmont), while Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island DS (YI2), and Yoshi's New Island (YI3) are Yoshi games that spun off from Yoshi's Island.

Mario's Creators Answer Burning Questions About the Series - Game Informer Sept 2012

Here in the States, Yoshi’s Island was referred to as Super Mario World 2. Despite the title, many gamers don’t consider it part of the core series. Do you consider it part of the classic canon of Mario platformers or is it a spin-off in your mind since the player controls Yoshi?

Shigeru Miyamoto: When we first made Yoshi's Island, we considered it part of the Mario series. After that, the Yoshi series continued on its own. As developers, do we consider it to be part of the core Mario series? The answer is yes.

at least they have a new game instead of a reissue of an old rom to celebrate this time.

this year is F-Zero's 25th anniversary but we know it's dead.

also, in 5 years, the time that F-Zero was alive is gonna be less than the time elapsed from its death up to that time.
