NSMB uses different powerup rules. The same super leaf in NSMB2 only turns you into Raccoon Mario.

They had that in 3D Land, too. Once you get to 999 lives, it replaces digits with crowns, rather than rolling to a fourth digit. The max is 1110 lives, which is all three crowns.
*00 = 1000
**0 = 1100
*** = 1110
At *** Mario loses his hat.
Something from NSMB2: when you start reaching the maximum digits for lives the game changes the number to a crown icon.

I only picked it because it was a cringe-worthy pun, no secondary intentions in mind.
If you guys dislike it that much, I could start a poll with some suggestions. But it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.

Also just to nitpick a bit, I wish they had the princesses grab their skirt while they ran full speed, kinda like the SMB2 artwork.
At 6:35 did they just stop a bullet bill with a knocked back enemy? That's such a cool attention to detail.
