Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

I played this for about an hour yesterday. What sadist designed this thing? Warp Zones that make you go BACK to previous levels? Not to mention those crazy ass thumb-busting jumps. WTF?

The lost levels is one of the best platforming games ever created, imo. The level are all great and well thought out, and flow really well.

This game is so freaking awesome. I wish the Famicom mini version would get reprinted or released in the USA. :-|

It feels like a bad ROM hack. Multiple Bowsers in a level? Bloopers (or Bloobers, depending on your preferred spelling) in the air? Not jumping out ala SMB3 Cheep-Cheeps, just floating around. Pfft.

I did like the idea of the wind, but most of the wind-affected jumps were more inane than that type of thing in Ninja Gaiden.

Man, I remember BEFORE Mario All-Stars came out, and knowing that there was a Japanese version of Super Mario 2 that the U.S. never got was hardcore nerd knowlege.

Now of course, that's now up there under "common gamer knowlege" with "OMG, did you know Final Fantasy 3 is actually FF6 in Japan???"

Also, am I wrong or did they include in on Super Mario Bros. DX for Game Boy Color?

I also remember reading that.

Anyway, The Lost Levels is easily the hardest of Mario games, but I've still beaten it quite a few times (SMAS version). And not just levels 1-8, but 9 and A-D as well. Lots of levels, which is a good thing, although some of them have pretty questionable design as was mentioned.

Yeah, it's included, but it's not very good, imo. I don't like the limited resolution of the GBC SMBDX at all. It makes the game nearly unplayable for me.

I remember getting Mario All Stars with my SNES and thinking "what's this then" and then I ate a poison mushroom and was like “WTF” and then the wind hit in and I was like “OMG” then I stop playing...

that's actually pretty fucking far from common knowledge if you saw the FFIV Advance threads.

I beat Super Mario Bros, I beat Super Mario Bros. 2, I beat Super Mario Bros. 3, I beat Super Mario World, I beat Yoshi's Island, I beat Super Mario 64, I beat Super Mario Sunshine, I beat Super Mario Land, I beat Super Mario Land 2.

The only Mario platformer I didn't beat and can't beat is Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels. For this reason I wish the game a horrible death. :(

Most fun I've had with a Mario game, despite all of its problems. Play with a friend and trade off for the best experience! Frustration is better with a pal.

Most magazines at the time mentioned the FF disparity, but oddly ignored the Mario one. Even reviews for Super Mario Bros. 2 (NA) neglected it. Did Nintendo pay them off or something?

Yeah, Luigi was a bit more 'floaty', and I believe Mario came to a halt after running a bit faster than Luigi did. They both had their strengths and weaknesses, depending on the level you were playing.

I really liked Lost levels, but, hell, it's challenging... Some castle were insane mazes, and there was a lot of poison mushrooms at the worse possible position (or hidden blocks).

You managed to obtain world 9 ? Did you cheat ?
If not, my respect for you is endless (or I miss something important... I thought you had to finish the game without losing one life to open it ?)

As crisdecuba said, you "only" need to beat the game without any warping. Without losing even one life would be... well a bit harder :D

So what is the story too all this?
Why wasnt this released in the US until the compilation came out for SNES?
Nintendo thought everyone outside Japan were pussies. :D

I thought it was so cool when a friend of mine bought it at an import shop when we were kids. I was so pissed he wouldn't let me borrow it that I wouldn't let him borrow my Rockman 2 import.

Speaking of which, it was years later when I finally played Mega Man 2 that I realized there was an easier mode (Japanese version only had hard mode).

What I want is a home version os the TRUE lost levels: the Super Mario Bros. 1 arcade game, which has slightly different levels in the second half of the game (wheras worlds 5 and 7 simply reused earlier worlds).

The game's charm is that everything in the original Super Mario Bros. was *hidden* warp zone, *hidden* star, *hidden* extra life, *hidden* beanstalk, *hidden* coins, etc. A young child could realistically beat the game in a few hours without knowledge of any of the secrets. In Super Mario Bros. 2 you're actually punished, most of the time, for trying to explore or find the easy way out. I still can't beat the game without losing at least a couple lives and I replay Super Mario Allstars at least once a year.

I remember this on Mario all-stars. At the time I never really got into it because I was a kid and it was too hard. Maybe I'll get back into this badboy if I find some time away from my PS2 and DS.

You just had to beat the game without having used a warp. If you do, you get world 9.
Really ? I only have All stars, what exactly do I need ? Finish it without shutting off the console off (with save) ? Can I use continues ? I'm sure that I made all the levels, without warping...

I'm suddenly VERY interested...

yeah I remember this too. I also remember knowing about the unreleased Zeldas as well.

I only got a chance to play this once in an arcade way way back when. I remember it was harder too

Ah...SUCH a great game. I wish Nintendo would make a mario game as hard as that again. Hopefully New Super Mario Brothers will be half as hard/fun as this was.

O, and to answer your question, yes you can continue and save and quit. All you have to do is not warp at all. Then you get world 9 and the "letter levels."

I got (and finished) A-D, but I never managed to get 9. I'm pretty sure that I did at least once without warping. Strange... I'll try again (I played All stars a few weeks ago, it's still in my SNES). Thanks...

As far as I remember, you can save and even quit during the game, and still get to Level 9. So I'm pretty sure you warped at some point... maybe you can't even warp backwards (some pipes take you back one or more levels)?

I remembered this being really tough when I was like 8 years old, but once I hit 10 I made it my bitch. It's really not that hard, you just have to have a little Mario skillz...

There are some SMB3/SMW hacks out there much harder (yet fun!)

I beat it. You should all try the Luigi's Lost Levels (or something like that) rom hack if you think this is hard. That one will put hair on your chest.

I got world 9 :D

You didn't have to finish the game without dying, only without losing all your lives OR turning off the game and saving. It was only opened by playing in one sitting, which took me oh, a damn week. It's still on my SMB collection saves on my cart :)

edit--To clarify, to my knowledge you had to play the game without warping OR saving to get world 9.

Major cheating... Mario fell directly into a piranah plant on his way down and didn't die.

It's a tool-assisted run. Played in slow motion with saved states.

Basically, these aren't made to fool anybody as much as they are to show what a perfect playthrough could look like. TONS of bugs exploited, too.

I'm guessing the warp pipe piranah plants are only for show.

Thanks a lot... I'll try soon. So, if it took you one week, I guess you can loose all your lives and continue, as long as you don't warp and you don't turn the game off ?

Yes, but I don't find it quite as enjoyable. Lost levels is hard, but still playable. The level design is only thought to be frustrating, by placing bad items just where you'll land if you're not very careful...

No cheat, just a bug exploit, in fact.
