Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Switch 2 vs Wii Direct Comparison

So it's quite clearly not just a 4k/60 re-release. Completely new textures across the board, more detailed skyboxes, etc.. etc.. :

Looking forward to playing these both again docked on Switch 2!

With DK just coming out and them giving us these, we're likely not getting the next 3d Mario game for at least a year or two is my guess.

Yeah. I would say it is a buy. Pretty good new textures.

How are they going to do the star bit thing with the Wiimote?

It sounds like it will be better to hold the joycons in your hands and do the motions.

I was more comfortable when it was just the same and could feel smug relying on my WiiU to avoid FOMO without even playing it.

Dammit.

So, can we play this without motion controls?
Yes, but the right joystick being used as the star cursor is not fun at all. I suggest using the joycon for motion pointing. The spin attack is still mapped to a button and doesnt require you to shake the controller.

How do the "ball rolling" and "aquatic race" works??

I might actually give in and buy a Switch 2 this week.
Bestbuy has the 0% thing if paid off in 1 year. It's tempting.
Thats how i got mine. It was the best purchase i made, its getting a tone of play.

Cyberpunk, Trials 1st, Everybodys golf, Puzzle quest, star wars outlaws, Bravery default, Hades 2, donkey kong,
Plus the entire switch 1 library with many enhanced games.

Will be adding these to the game stack soon.

Looks great! How are the controls going to work with Yoshi? Did they add an auto aim toggle for aiming for fruit? Otherwise that will be no fun for us with a Pro controller.

Sadly, it's here where the Switch versions' biggest issue rears its head. Like the 3D All-Stars version of Galaxy, both games here replace the Wii Remote's pointer aiming with a new gyro system, which attempts to replicate the feel of the original with tilt aiming on the right Joy-Con, or tilting the Switch itself in portable mode.

In practice, it's a fine solution to a mechanic that previously required players to hook up a sensor bar to their television, especially in the first Galaxy game where pointing feels like a secondary consideration.

In Galaxy 2, however, pointer aiming with Yoshi is far more integral to gameplay, exposing the inaccuracy of the gyro system compared to the Wii original. Players are frequently required to accurately aim at enemies and items during intense sequences, and while it does work, it just feels awkward compared to the Wii Remote, which you could simply point at the thing you wanted Yoshi to eat.

"Players are frequently required to accurately aim at enemies and items during intense sequences, and while it does work, it just feels awkward compared to the Wii Remote, which you could simply point at the thing you wanted Yoshi to eat."
Handheld mode comes off worse in this regard, as players are required to tilt the entire system, which feels impractical for some of Galaxy 2's tougher levels. Annoyingly, Switch 2's mouse controls are restricted to just the 2-player co-op function (which allows a second person to shoot Star Bits).

It would have taken some control remapping for jumping, but it would have been interesting to see if Nintendo could have come up with a way to play with movement on the left Joy-Con and mouse-based cursor controls on the right.

This is the exact reason I theorized and told people why Nintendo didn't include Galaxy 2 in the 3D All-Stars collection, and why (I thought) they'd never release it on Switch. Clearly I was wrong about them releasing it on Switch, but it sounds like it's more because Nintendo has loosened up on their in-game controls quality threshold. I'm honestly quite surprised by that, but I suppose that's why they included an "assist mode" in this version.

For the record, this is a similar reason as to why I don't think we'll ever get Prime 3 on Switch, unless it's a full remaster. But I was clearly wrong about Galaxy 2…

I didn't like Galaxy the few times I tried it, and I don't remember if I ever tried Galaxy 2, but I'm still considering this for some reason.

I have 3D All Stars so perhaps I should give it another try there first lol.

Galaxy 2 is essentially a level pack for Galaxy. it was originally concepted as a DLC

The joycons can do the job of the wiimote pointer, no??

It's mind blowing that it's not an option on Switch. 🤦‍♂️

it's a full sequel, which began early on in development as Galaxy "DLC". It has 242 vs 120 stars and every level is brand new. New story. New hub, Yoshi, etc. Not unless a level pack can be considered as such when it contains more content than the thing it's based on. I guess at that point it's just semantics, though. 🤷‍♂️

what I mean by that is that, outside of yoshi, it has zero real gameplay changes.

other 3D Mario games usually feel entirely unique to the ones before and after. but Galaxy 2 is just the exact same core gameplay as Galaxy 1.

so for 3D Mario standards, it's essentially a level pack... a very substantial one, but a level pack nonetheless.

Have you not played it? What does 'zero new changes' mean? You mean, other than Yoshi, the different Yoshi abilities, and all the new power-ups for Mario, and every level being new and not repeated? If we're arguing here it can't be anything other than semantics.

Mario core gameplay doesn't change, other than in Sunshine. He jumps, he climbs, he kicks/ spins, he collects coins/ other things, he leaps... 🤷‍♂️
