Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS had a better debut than the original, at least at retail

Now, granted, this is system with a massive install base compared to the lean userbase of Wii U.

However, a lot of things were stacked against SMM 3DS being a success. The game is severely limited in offerings for level sharing from creator or to player, compared to the Wii U game. It is supposed to be a very solid game with a lot of new Nintendo-made levels and challenges:

But it was still unclear (IMO) how it would sell. Considering SMM Wii U has gone on to have tremendous legs in terms of sales, hopefully this will bode well for 3DS and for the inevitable Switch port.

I think you should have compared the Media Create SKU numbers to each other. Famitsu and Media Create have discrepancies from each other.

he doesn't even put the mc numbers for smm 3ds on 1st post. that 2 numbers are for wii u version
here's 3ds version media create numbers

Not really surprising tbh. 3DS is huge in Japan, Wii U was a flop. Thread over.

It's very surprising to see the massive debut of this game. I honestly thought it would be no more than 50k.

What are the current LTD sales of the Wii U version?

Since it's not in the OP without clicking the link – Super Mario Maker for 3DS opened at 162,180.

(Japan) Super Mario Maker got a pretty huge marketing push when it was released for Wii U. Commercials on trains, billboards at the biggest stations, etc. I haven't seen much in the form of advertising for the 3DS version outside of in-store displays.

Thanks all. Total brain fart, sorry about that. Fixed now.

expected because of the hardware that it released on

that it didn't sell even more is probably the condemnation of the limited feature set that it shipped with

Selling around half its shipment numbers isn't... great with respect to sales versus expectations
That's not unusual for Mario though. The games tend to have long legs while holding prices and retailers are confident with larger upfront orders because of that. This isn't like FFXV or something.

Mario Maker won't be possible on Switch since it only has one screen.
I played SMM off-tv almost exclusively. It doesn't need two screens.

There's plenty of games with editing features that only support traditional controllers. It might not be as elegant or accessible, but there's nothing preventing it from happening.

I was really confused by this for a second. I guess what you mean is that it might be more difficult in console mode when the machine is docked? Because one screen definitely isn't the issue. The Wii U version is completely playable in off-TV mode. Handheld mode isn't a problem just because it doesn't have two screens.

Console mode would require some changes. But it hardly seems like an insurmountable challenge.

I am surprised a lot of people have low sales expectations for this. It's a good game. Really enjoying the Super Mario Challenge (got to world 13 this morning) and the Yamamura tutorials give you a greater appreciation to Mario level design. Wish the Wii U version had them, it's a more measured way of showing people the best core principles for Mario level creation.

Shame about the hobbled online features, if your priority for Mario Maker is to share courses and get feedback it might not be for you. But if you're interested in the stuff it does that the Wii U version does not it's worth picking up. Particularly if you primarily play on the go.

create levels undocked
play levels docked and undocked.

no reason mario maker switch should have any problems

though hopefully it has slopes

IR pointer replacing touch seems like the obvious solution. Or simply limit creation to handheld mode.

160K is not that good result.

also:
For a year old port with missing features that outsold the original it's great. And the sellthrough is fine for a Mario game. Unlike some other big releases this holiday season SMM 3DS will have no problem moving all it's shipped copies at full price.

Most of the legs on SMM Wii U was because people were buying Splatoon and there was no Splatoon bundle. SMM on 3DS with Super Mario Run will definitely be another multi million seller by the end of December WW, while in Japan I would not be surprised for it to sell another 500k in December.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
And we had a bunch of Gaffers asking themselves why Nintendo is developing a inferior 3DS version ---> thats why.

Sure, its not going to have any problems selling through its initial shipment and then some.
It's just not.. well, not really a brag topic sort of first week sales number.
