Super Mario Paint was just added to NSO!

Who didn't see this one coming?

Some details... it is basically the same Super Mario Paint sold all the way back in 1993. Probably one of my most played pieces of software for the SNES, when I think about it.

It is compatible with the Switch 2 mouse (obviously), but also, for Switch 1 users, you can plug in a USB mouse.

Honestly, using a USB mouse on the Switch 1 is quite a surprise. You could go to a dollar store and buy a garbage USB mouse for nothing, if you needed too.

Also, up the game/ software can use up to four suspension states to save four pieces of art/ animation/ music tracks. Could you use the Nintendo screen recording software to string together multi scene animations?

I like Mario Paint. It's harder to justify spending a lot of time on the main paint feature nowadays with all the drawing apps, but the package as a whole with the animations, music, and gnat game is still very cool. And the music maker actually hits a good spot between accessible and still sounding pretty good.

The weirdly irreverent trailer was fun too. Never thought I'd see the day when an official Nintendo video is using Mr Plinkett-style cut-off gags.

I agree in some ways. It might be fun for nostalgic sake. The animation tools can be amusing, as you could probably sting multiple scenes together and make primitive cartoons. The special stamp tool is basically just a pixel art tool. I think the music maker will be the most popular part. Stuff like the video below, could be made in Mario Paint (and actually was)...

I didn't think those cowards had it in them! Good to see, would love to poke around for a bit and then never play again, seriously.

I wonder if Nintendo is just interested in seeing how well Mario Paint will be received?

If they did a modern version of Mario paint, and tried to keep the 16-bit aesthetic but perhaps bumped up the colour pallete, enhanced the animation tools, expanded the stamp/ sprite system... and maybe turned it into a group online collaboration app, they might have something... There have been online group collaborative drawing boards for decades now, online. I spent quite a bit of my free time drawing on them. It would have to be 'local' friend invite.

For the NSO service, this is a nice touch. Something people have been asking for since Nintendo announced the dual mice with the Switch 2. Even using two players on the same switch 2 could be a thing. Name the game Super Mario Paint World.

I've said it already but if they would make a new Mario Paint for the Switch 2 at least they should have support for a Wacom Tablet, the cheapest cost 37 Euros.

They already released a more modern version than the SNES way back on the n64DD that you could share your creations using the randnet online service or use your art you made in paint studio in other games as textures in polygon & talent studio as well as sim city.

Switch would be perfect to do a modern interpretation seeing as they already have game maker they could work together in same way plus switch can already use mouse & touchscreen by default.

Wii u sold incredibly poorly though.
So much, that I strongly believe lack of sales prevented its full potential.

I'm talking about the decision to let people exchange original drawings.

Edit: I'll just be direct, if they do this, they may as well change the name from Mario Paint to Mario Penis

They really need to make a Mario paint for SW2 that allows sharing in some way

Nintendo has made various attempts at doing online drawing and collaboration. Most notably the pictochat feature found in the Nintendo DS. I think Nintendo could do a group collaborative oekaki styled version of Super Mario Paint that only functions through friend codes, private online invites and local connectivity. Basically they could handle it in the same way that they do online video conferencing / group video chat for the switch 2, if they really wanted to. Nintnedo wouldn't have to moderate anything that way.

I look at Mario Paint, and think to myself how great it could be if it had an extended 32k colour palette (like the SNES), with multiple layers, an enhanced sprite layer, enhanced animation system with multiple animated objects on screen at once. Some basic blend modes. A few more brushes and additional tools, like a zoom in and out. Maybe a rudimentary 3D polygon modeling ability.

Group online collaborative drawing boards are not a new concept at all. They have been around for multiple decades now in online, desktop and mobile form. The earliest ones were made using Macromedia Shockwave and Adobe Flash back in 2004-2005. The current ones use HTML5. I use to moderate for one site called iscribble.net, back in the day.

The Star-Lord drawing was done by me, this is an old screenshot from 2018... some other person drew the giant drumstick in his hand

I don't really want to post emulated screenshots in here... but I did own the game, along with a Super Nintendo. But I sadly gave away my SNES and all of its games to my sister who sold it off at a garage sale
fuck me!
.

Using Mario Paint in an emulator is really unwieldy, because the mouse calibration is awful. Which makes it impossible to draw in the program.. you might as well just download Tux paint. But the Special Stamp tool is still functional.

This is still fun to mess around with, and you can use the 'special stamp' tool with the animation tool to make some basic sprite animation. To bad it only saves 16 stamps. But I guess with save states... you could hold 64...

I wonder if my old creations are on my snes cart (almost certainly not at this point)

It's also wild that Nintendo just dropped official USB Switch mouse support like it's nothing.

Hold on a minute. You can't even buy this? You have to subscribe to their service? Hahahahahaha.

That's the thing that gets me. They hype the dual mouse support in the Switch 2 (which is a nice feature, BTW) and then they follow it up by casually adding USB mouse support to the Switch 1, just for Mario Paint. Nintendo could have added this feature into the Switch 1 at any point, if they wanted too.

In theory, you could use small sized drawing tablet if you wanted to... not that you would need to use one, given the low resolution of Mario Paint's canvas size. Or use a wireless USB mouse. I think there are a couple third party SNES-inspired mouse knock-offs out there. I wouldn't suggest spending a lot of money on a mouse to just play Mario Paint on NSO. Go to he local dollar store and get a trash mouse, if you need one.

I can't understate how good the stamp maker was back in the day, It did give you pixel accurate precision when using it. But at the same time, it was clunky because it only has 16 slots for custom stamps.
