Super Mario World is an amazing game. However, it is hard to believe that the game is almost fifteen years old. My how time passes. It's pretty disappointing that Nintendo still hasn't made another true 2D Mario game in all that time. As great a game it is, I've always wanted to see Nintendo make a sequel to it. Or at least another game in the same vein.
About 1991, when I bought my SNES, I was blown away by the game. I think I said at the time, "This game was awesome. I can't wait to see what the next Mario will be like!" I waited, and waited, and waited. And Mario never came back. I think it was about 4 years later, and there was a blurb in Nintendo Power about "Super Mario World 2". Excitement at last! However, my anticipation deflated upon learning a few months later that it was more of a 'Yoshi' game than a Mario game. Not to take anything away from the equally(If not more-so) brilliant Yoshi's Island, of course. But it's a different beast than Mario. Years later, Gameboy Advance came out. The first thought in my mind - "At last! Now Nintendo has NO excuse not to make a new Super Mario Bros. game!". Re-hash after port after re-hash, I was wrong. Now GBA is close to death, and Portable gaming has gone 3D. We may never get another game like Super Mario World, alas.
