Super Monkey Ball: T&R

gamerankings has Nintendo Power reviewing this game at 6.5/10... anyone have the review (or others)... is this one a miss?

Impressions so far say that the touch screen doesn't work well for most of the mini-games, but the main game and certain minigames like air hockey are still very fun. I'm a pretty big Monkey Ball fan, but i'll wait for it to hit $20 (or $25 if Target or Circuit City have it on sale the first week).

I got a hold of it when I was in Japan and I like it.
Touch screen main game control is problematic so I play it digitaly and that works wonderfull.
Mini games are fun but sadly no one else has it here so I have been unable to play multiplayer games with it yet.

You must enjoy pain.

Sure you can do the beginner levels on the d-pad, but was you get to the medium/hard levels they are downright impossible with the d-pad.

Control is wose than the Xbox/PS2 SMB games and that's saying a lot.

Taste the sad :(

Can you explain why? Is it goofy like trying to run around in SM64?

If anybody really wants it that bad I'd sell my Japanese one since I think the game is awful (and I'm a huuuuge SMB1 & 2 fan). Wasn't any Japanese text that I can recall. Just rolling monkeys.

level design is poor and the camera is a bitch. controls are almost really good but not quite there. 6/10 in the review i saw.

What?

I loved the game. I've spent tons of time with it and I thought it was a great translation from console to handheld. The minigames aren't perfect (Race and Fight stink), but the others are tons of fun. People who complain about the controls simply haven't put enough time into mastering the stylus control.

Judge for yourselves, this negative reaction is kind of surprising to me...

While I hate the GBA version, I really liked T&R. Controls aren't as good as GameCube's, but they are good nevertheless and they are very fun. I'd recommend it, if you like Monkey Ball. Oh, and Mini Games are worse than singleplayer, but I play Monkey Ball for it's singleplayer ^^.

You'll have to explain this to me as even the people who tend to like it are using the d-pad because they admit the touch screen is impossible to use. I put like 5-10 hours into the game and I never found the touchpad feasable for tougher levels. The d-pad kinda works but it's too sensitive and you can make turns on thin platforms without falling.

After some adaptation I had no problem whatsoever.
It is quite a difference though between full analog and tapping the joypd for milliseconds to get the same effect.

It's rough for at least an hour, but you have to be VERY dedicated to learning the touch screen. If you tough it out, it's very rewarding. Otherwise, you're stuck with the dpad, which isn't very good...almost impossible towards the end.

My review goes up tomorrow, and I was very careful to point out that the full enjoyment of the game hinges on learning the touch screen control. However, learning the touch screen control method is very trying on your patience.

Played it today...hated the touch screen control :( I might try the d-pad but Monkey Ball without analogue control just sounds so wrong

The main problem I had with the touch screen is seemed like you could never turn hard. For example. Imagine going very fast straight forward on thin stip of land. You're pushing your stylus down at the top of the touch screen. Now imagine that at the end of the straightaway there is a 90 degree hard right turn. With the d-pad you could get right to the end and then tap right and the ball would turn 90 degrees. But with the touchpad if I pressed on the far right of the touchpad the ball would still go forward (north) but angle to the right. I could find any way to make sharp turns.

This was especially evident in monkey racing where you can't use the d-pad and the course is full of hard turns. No matter what I did on the touchpad if I was going fast I'd just fly off the course. The only way to turn would be to slow down extremely and then turn and go again.

I put 3 hours in it to finish it just using the touch screen. The D-Pad works better for very few levels, but in the end, it's not very rewarding. Touchscreencontrol is obviously superior.
Jeff, what's your page?
