Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Couple of things regarding the Hayabusa and the Kuros. Both of the Hayabusas that I own have an issue with not going to neutral correctly. It only happens when I flick the stick real quickly, but for some games (such as GG where it requires quick inputs), it could be an issue. For example, when I flick quickly to the left, it flicks to the right also before going to neutral (think slingshot motion). It may be because the Hayabusas have a longer throw. Regarding the Kuros, they always squeak for mine. Some of them don't squeak at all though, which make them wildly inconsistent. Regardless, the squeaks don't bother me as much as the Hayabusas registering an extra input.

You probably have slightly loose springs on your Hayabusas or something else weird is happening. The Hayabusa I put into my V3 Kai is fine and both of the ones here at work are fine too. We did put wider Kowal actuators into each of them, though, after a week of breaking in.

Yeah, stock spring is too loose for me (in sanwa and Hayabusa...seimitsu sticks seem okay stock). I put a 2lb spring in and it's perfect.

What is a kowal actuator? The only modifications I've done are springs. I've heard the term before, but not sure what it's for.

I don't mind the loose spring of the jlf when using a Kowal actuator. Makes it feel tighter to me bc of the shorter throw.

You can buy an actuator that's slightly wider than stock. They're designed for a JLF but since the Hayabusa has the same size and fit, you can drop one into a Hayabusa and get what is, IMO, just the right amount of throw without modifying the spring. I may put an LS40 spring into mine while I'm at it, honestly.

Hmm, seems like it makes the dead zone much smaller. May have to try it out. I may also get the Sanwa one, since I actually like the Hayabusas too. Too bad since I like the longer throw :/

There is also a switch on the Kai, but they made them more "moddable." Now, any button can be replaced to the buttons to the side. I mean, it's great in terms of being able to be customized, but it's kind of a pain to set it up. Doesn't help that the instructions are piss poor. I've just decided to not use it at all. The good news though, the stick apparently remembers your settings, so you should technically have to do it only once.

Ah, that sounds like the button assignment feature on the Fighting Edge. Cool in concept, but I'd rather just have the dead-simple toggle...

Just got my GamerFinger HBFS-30s (Cherry MX Red switches) in this morning, can't wait to try them out! I'll post some impressions later.

All I want is this:

te_madcatz.jpg

but available in the UK for somewhere around £80 and functioning on both PS3 and PS4.

Seems like that's too much to ask for. :(

Well it is, even a second hand TE goes for more than that.

------

Didn't realise MC had hiked price for new TE2s, guessing they'd want about £160-180 in UK, assuming they don't try the $1 = £1 nonsense like original TEs. Way too high either way.

With the problem you're describing, the spring will help more, since that tension is what returns/keeps the stick to neutral. The actuator just makes the throw shorter, which, IMO, is better for stuff like 3D fighters and anything else needing quicker tapping movements (like shmups).

So I was thinking about doing this until I realized that shipping is higher than the spring. I don't even understand why a spring costs $3.00 to ship.

i want to try these out so baaaaaad, but the octagonal rim put me off aesthetically. Stupid, i know. #designsnob

I know, I'm ok with it as long as everything's consistent, but they're out of stock on 24mm buttons, which means I'm going to have 8 octagonal buttons and 1 round. :(

Looked into the actuator and I'm interested since I've been riding the gate for 632146 lately, but now I recall I didn't like the Seimitsu stick's throw for fighters. Does it feel like that?

Having used an LS32, 40 and 58 as well as a JLF, a JLF with the actuator and the hayabusa both with and without the actuator it feels almost like an LS40 (the shortest throw of the Seimitsus) but slightly longer. It's a good amount shorter than a stock JLF or Hayabusa, but a little further than "in the middle" of those and the LS40. It feels about like a 32, to be honest.

It takes some getting used to, honestly, but at the same time it feels really really weird using a stock Hayabusa, now. It feels like doing sweeping motions like most 2D fighters are easier without sacrificing the square gate or making tap motions more difficult. We play 3S on them all the time here at work.

Thanks. Been a while but I think I had the LS32. I'll order a few different items to experiment. Being raised on Happ, I'm still not totally used to the throw or looseness of Sanwa sticks. Altho the last time I tried to remedy that, I installed a bat top and octo gate on my TE and that was a mistake all around.

Got my Kai from the Hori Store. Their packaging sucks, both the shipping packaging and the stick itself. Joystick box just put in a bigger box with no padding. Fortunately, my box condition is ok, because I'm picky about that. I also dislike their simple egg crate packging for the stick after being spoiled by Mad Catz Sticks and Eightarc.

Looks nice, just like all the pics. Seems heavy enough for me. Won't get a chance to play with it until later, but the Kuros seem ok for me on feel alone. I love Sanwa buttons, but these don't jump out as being as bad out of the box, so I guess that's good . They seem quieter than I expected. A tiny squeak on them but nothing offensive. I'm going to use them for a while and see if they bother me, at least until I make sure it works ok for a while. I feel like I might be pleasantly surprised by them, but it's early to say without playing a game.

Only initial con is there's less wrist space on the stick compared to Mad Catz Pros and round 2 TEs. So that might be the biggest adjustment coming from those. That and I guess you technically void the warranty by opening it.

None of this is probably new information, but I'm excited to have a PS4 stick finally without any adapters or nonsense.

This is my main issue with mine too. How could they overlook something that important?

Also why these companies keep asking premium prices but they can't even add a 3.5mm jack?

The Hayabusa stick is probably the best stick I've ever used and the Kuro buttons seem fine to me so far. Loving it on GG Xrd and USF4. I'm going to test Tekken TT2 later.

It also works like a charm on USF4 PC version.

Good to hear that buttons seem okay. I've got one more day to go before I get mine... Then it's back to getting destroyed at Xrd. :D

So my 13yo son is in the market for a arcade stick (PC or XBONE or both). He has a very limited budget he is willing to spend on it, $40-$50. Is there a kit out there in this price range where I can help him build the box and cable interfaces?

I'm not sure if this will be viable since raw materials alone will run you about $120.00 or so.

Yeah, be really rough to find something in this price range. You'd be lucky to find a pad for a padhack at that range, not even taking into account buttons, sticks, case, etc.

Hori ex2 (PC/360 only)

Although it's a looooong stretch, there was a bundled Fightstick for special version of Injustice that usually floats around for that price. It's okay, in quality and ability to mod.

*Edit* It would be for either PS3/PC or 360

In Australia there's a place that sells the WWE Brawlstick for $60AU, maybe there's somewhere local to you who's doing a similar deal?

Got ,one today too: will eventually do a full sanwa mod since I'm not a fan of black buttons but overall I love this thing and the Kuro buttons aren't anywhere near as bad as the stock HRAP 3 (giant black red and yellow buttons) I had on PS3. The cord length seems to be totally fine too so it might be slight longer.

Hopefully I can get Cronus Max working for Xbox One and KI but I'll have plenty to play on PS4 and PC.

Stupid question: Are there any joysticks (at least, major-brand ones) that wouldn't be suitable for side-button mounting? I'm thinking of getting one (probably the aforementioned WWE Brawlstick) with the intention of mounting at least two buttons per side (and maybe one or two on the front).

Finally had a chance to play with the 4 Kai and I'm pretty happy with it overall so far. Keep in mind I'm not a high-level player by any means, and I'm surely repeating what my expectations were pre-release, which I guess is good in that there are no curveballs.

I don't mind the Kuros at all (for now). They felt good enough to me for that I'm not going to mess yet with the warranty (no idea how long that is) to swap them out even though I have a extra black and grey sets of Sanwas ready to go. Maybe I'll wait until the return/exchange window closes just in case of other issues. I could see if someone is not used to them how they might not like them at all, but I'd bet if it's your first stick, you might not give them a second thought. I do like the lighter touch of the Sanwas, but these are not too bad. I was expecting to hate them.

One thing I actually like is that compared to my SFxT Pro Mad Catz sticks which I like a lot, the buttons are much quieter, even thought they have an occasional squeak. They may be due to the Pro being more hollow and echoey, and how much I slam on them, but man using that stick is loud as heck. This may be a combo of the buttons and less hollow space of the Kai, but it much less offensive in terms of overall noise.

Gonna keep the Hayabusa stick in there to stay. Feels much like the Sanwa to me, but maybe a little stiffer perhaps. I was never that great at FADCs to Ultras in SFIV, and felt like I was missing a ton on my old stick, and it feels like I was able to do them way more consistently right away.

In terms of features, which I'm a sucker for, it's not missing anything unlike the TE2s, and I like having the Start/Options button on the top actually. I'm kinda sick of reaching around the top of the Mad Catz sticks since I don't play in tourneys. The touchpad and click worked well enough, which might be handy for messaging.

The button assign feature is kinda nice, because you can use it to make the far right (L1/L2) buttons or the options button work as up to any three button combos or disable them totally. You can make the options button empty if you want and remap options to the side turbo button.

For example, in Injustice PS4, I was able to map the touchpad button to the L1 button, so I could reset the training mode without having to move my hand to reach to the top side of the stick. So, already it'ss an option I appreciate being there. It might come in handy if a future fighter overlooks something in their button config or maybe something in another genre.

The instructions are just atrocious, so I thought it didn't work, but figured it out. In case anyone wants to know, here's what the manual did not explain.
-Turn the Assign mode switch on. (turbo light turns on)
-Tap the button you want to change (L1/L2 or option) - turbo light blinks
-HOLD the button or combo you want to map to it until it stops blinking and the assign light comes on
-turn off A switch.

My only beef, as I mentioned before, is that there's not a lot of horizontal wrist space, so it felt much more like my hand was floating in space. I wish they made the case a little deeper. The Kai's buttons are are little higher already than the Regualr RAP, but it's not that much to offset this. It feels odd coming from TEs.

As far as the extra stick spacing between the stick and buttons on the Kai, I didn't really notice that much of a difference.

Anyway, can't wait to get my second stick for 2P so I can try to get some friends to start playing fighters. If someone didn't already have a stick preference, I'd easily recommend this one over the TE2 considering the price point and features for sure.

So now that the Kai is out there in people's hands, with English instructions, can someone clarify what the Assign mode does? This is what I would like to do:

Remap L3 to L1
Remap R3 to L2

This way I can have a 6 button layout on the face, but keep the functionality of the L1 and L2 buttons on the side of the stick.

Thanks.

The instructions might as well not be in English. You can remap the side L3/R3 to the top L1/L2 or Option or disable the L1/L2 or Option. You just can't remap anything to the side L3/R3. If you disable the Option, you can remap it to the side Turbo button though. Dunno if that serves the same purpose you're going for.

EDIT: Ok, yeah, the buttons squeak more than I originally noticed. Mostly when pressing a button multiple times in a row. With a single firm hit it doesn't seem to happen that much or be as annoying.

I see, thanks for the clear explanation. Sounds like I can't use the Assign mode for what I had in mind, which is a shame. However, the stick overall sounds very solid. I will probably pick one up and rely on the new button remapping feature in the 2.50 firmware to move L1/L2 to L3/R3 if needed.

Finally got to try my RAP4 Kai out and man I can't seem to get half circles down like at all :/

Thanks, Obama!

Also, the Kuros feel different than the Kuros in the FE but maybe that's just the rust dripping down my fingers...

With USF4 on the horizon for PS4, as well as GG Xrd (already available?) and MKX, I hate the fact that I can't seem to find any info regarding the MadCatz TE2 for PS4. Even the distributor indicates that he has no info regarding a release in Europe any time soon. I tried to ask Markman a couple of times on Twitter, but he missed or ignored my questions.
I was willing to invest in yet another 199 Euro fightstick, but if this is an indication of how they look at us, the customers in Europe, I am basically not feeling it. as soon as I hear of a compatible PCB, I'll look into modding my current Hori or something. F*ck these money grabbers, man, especially if my patronage is not even appreciated.

When I asked about PS3 & PS4 TE2 for Europe back in December, Markman had this to say:
In regards to EU. Unfortunately we do not have the rights (yet) to sell PS4 FightSticks in EU. We are working on it, though.

I guess the licensing is negotiated separately for different regions and for whatever reason they haven't made a deal yet for European distribution. Or maybe they haven't gotten their products certified for European safety regulations or something like that.

Ok, thanks. That at least gives me an idea why there's no news yet. I guess I caught Markman either a bad time, or he was just tired of answering the same question over and over. ah well...

You made me cancel my RAP V order because of this. Although I love the look of the Hori sticks, and the start button on top, this was a deal breaker. Preordered a TE2 on Amazon just now.

I'll probably get used to it, but yeah, it's the big thing I think they can improve on. Given the choice for sticks right now, it's just not a deal-beaker for me like some of the TE2s cons are for me.

I just saw the news MC is doing SFV sticks and are talking about there being "new range" of fightsticks. I wonder if this means a possible redesign and maybe a mid-range model. Probably moot for me though since I got the Horis. I gotta stop buying these things.

I always thought that was the plan. Release the higher end model when the hardcore are more likely to buy, and release the midrange stuff when there are more people in general buying sticks.

Really sad Hori didn't make an FE already :(. Hopefully my tears won't make the paint on my VLX curl up. :P

I'm buying the Hori Fight Commander from a local tonight. Not using it to mod stuff (I already have 3 PS4 sticks with a VLX on the way, lol). Mostly looking forward to just having a decent 6 button pad.

I used mine once to make sure they work before tearing into them. The buttons are great, but the DPad still sucks compared to a DS3

Let us know how the d-pad is or general feedback if possible.

EDIT: Oops, missed the above. Dang.

I don't really care for the DS3 dpad. Vita is my favorite followed by a saturn pad.

brofist.png

As lauded as the Saturn d-pad is, the Vita one is superior and I still feel like Sony missed a great opportunity for the DS4.

I'm a total ass, apparently, and think the Saturn d-pad is overrated, though. Always felt the SNES d-pad was better because there were times it was more difficult than it should have been to properly hit a diagonal on a Saturn or Genesis pad but the SNES was spot on.

maybe if it was larger, and the directions were separated on top...

err, wait (Im still using DS3 on PSTV over the DS4)

I don't like the separation. :)

Would love a larger Vita Dpad, though. I've heard good things from my pad playing friends about the pad.

I'm not using it for fighters, though, so as long as it's not super fragile, I'll be fine.
