Want to buy my first arcade stick, don't want to break the bank.

Was think of this for pc/ps3: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0095C6JRC/

Thoughts? I know it's smaller but I like it's compactness - and price point.

8"x6" seems a bit too small. If you're trying to get something cheap, compact and don't mind having a picture of The Rock on your stick, those WWE Brawlsticks can probably still be found for a pittance. Maybe a Qanba Q1 if you can find it.

I am just curious. What point is served by having multiple fight sticks? I have my street fighter IV tournament edition stick and it works just fine on multiple fighting games.

Different layouts, different parts, different artwork, having a setup for local versus gaming, or just 'cuz you wanna.

I can get a WWE All Stars Brawlstick for £45 but the design is a bit awful. Would it be hard to change the look of it?
Unscrew the bottom, and push the buttons out (disconnect the quick disconnects if you want to keep the art intact). Peel off the art layer; it's just a sticker.

I have a 3 button stick for VF and an 8 button stick for lesser fighters. it's nice to have options.

1. I love the way different sticks look and feel.
1a. Different layouts for different fighters. I like the VLX layout for Tekken, the noir layout for SC, and I tend to use the outside six of the VLX layout on 6 button/capcom games.
2. When I host gatherings, even people without sticks have options on which to play.
3. I think it's great that we've got so many different people making sticks and I like to support the companies that continue to make products I love.

So I got my hayabusa HRAPv4 from japan almost a week ago. Been playing a lot of ssf4ae on pc since then. Gotta say I'm really happy with the stick. I owned a madcatz MvC TE with sanwa parts(which I really like) and hori's own Kuro buttons are just as good if not better imo. They pretty much feel the same, I would say the kuro buttons are a little more quiet during button presses, but that's about it. The hayabusa stick also feels really solid so I'm definitely happy with my purchase. From what I saw the stick itself seems to be easy to mod if you don't prefer the default stick/buttons. A lot of other people already customized their hori, but I don't do that too much myself, I am happy with the default product.

The only issue with this stick which is known is the back cable compartment door is really shitty compared to madcatz lol. When I got the stick it was already detached and I had to put it back on. It's not a major issue for me though as I don't tend to shove my cable back in there often.

Overall it's a really solid stick for $150 if your looking to purchase one that will work on pc/ps3/ps4.

Seems pretty sturdy too considering I dropped it by accident a couple days ago lol. Hit the side of my drawer and feel on my big toe(hurt like a bitch) I was really pissed at myself since I just got the stick, but no damage was done thank god.

What's a good not-so-expensive option as far as arcade sticks go for just playing MAME and such? I want to be able to just use it with my Macbook or PC laptop for older games and some fighters. I've searched and found some decently priced ones, but I'm not sure on if they're built well enough.

I love the Hayabusa stick, I hate the kuros. They feel like hori buttons, they're squeaky, and the slightly wider base, when compared to seis or sanwas, is enough to throw me off. I'm constantly hitting two buttons instead of one.

II'm trying to break a set in to see if the squeak goes away, but it's been months and it hasn't happened. Not as bad as when I first got them though.

I don't have this so called squeak problem. It could be an issue with your stick itself. Buttons seem solid for me. You can always change them to sanwas if you really hate them.

I did. I actually put the kuros into a VLX to break them in.

I've got two fighting edges and both sets of kuros squeak. I've had a similar problem with other hori buttons, and I've also seen people on other forums complain about squeaky kuros. The V4 is the newest stick, though, so maybe it's a problem they've worked out already.

Yeah probably, I never had any previous experience with hori products. The v4 is my first and it doesn't squeak at all, so maybe they did fix it lol.

Playing on my Hori stick becomes more and more fun every day. The point of doing better with it than with a pad and not feeling handicapped anymore, is finally reached. It took me about 2-3 weeks, but I probably could have made it in less than a week if I had played every day. I still think that grabbing one was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my gaming career.

I'm a bit worried about my lever though. The deadzone became noticeably bigger since the first use.

Also, I'm still curious how an octagonal gate plays, even though the square works out just fine for me. I've heard that about 95% of the stick players use square, so it's probably better to just stick with it.

Is there a substantial improvement over pad? Right now I can't beat a single characters trials. Hoping a stick can improve my execution

Damn, that's like $36 in buttons

I bought 8 of them. :(

...

And a balltop.

:(

Also got this:

Which fits the FE perfectly:

Really wish I had one of these before EVO. I took a TE and hadn't practiced on one for a long time. Not used to the smaller frame anymore. Made a few crucial execution errors because of it. :/

Edit: Oh, got one of these, too.

I would've bought a P4A2 TE2, but Markman doesn't want my money. :P

What part of the of the trials are you having troubles with? Command inputs? Button presses?

First off, an arcade stick is way more fun to use. At least to me. Directional inputs are definitely easier to perform with a lever, than with a dpad. But this again is just my opinion. As for the buttons, I am able to ease my execution a bit, by using plinking. Of course the timing for those 1 frame links is still crucial, but the fact that a stick allows you all those finger techniques like double tapping, piano etc. to exploit the game's engine, opens up new ways... if we're talking about SF, that is. I don't know about other 2D FG's. I also like the audible feedback of the buttons, which allows auditive memory, next to muscle memory. Still, at late night, this can get you in trouble. Or when your opponent is sitting right next to you.

So, yes, it CAN improve your execution. Keep in mind that this years SF winner of Evo plays on an X360 pad and I think so does the currently best Dudley player. I don't know how they can use that Dpad effectively though.

If by "trials" you mean street fighter's and by "beat" you mean ALL of them, then I'm sorry for not being able to provide an answer.
I've only attempted Ryu's so far, but got stuck in the middle of the hard ones that include FADC. If you're able to do them on pad, I hardly assume that they won't be a problem for you on a stick, once you got used to it.

It's still a shame that they didn't implement trials for the new Ultra characters. I'd sit there day and night to finish Poison's.

EDIT: I was wrong. Louffy plays with an PS1 Controller.

I use them but I don't primarily play fighting games, mostly shmups. Not sure it makes a huge difference for me with fighters since the motions are quick enough that the square doesn't bother me. For other games the octagonal helps when holding a cardinal direction, like some slip ups on square gates while moving left/right in shmups have led to deaths for me, and I've found Pac Man CE/DX are much better on it vs square (barring rotating it into a diamond) cause of that.

On a side note afaik it increases the throw to the cardinal directions (makes them equal to diagonals)...which is the opposite of what Slagcoin says. It was the first thing I noticed years ago when I first used one, and recently got a Kowal actuator to shorten it. Course this is on a Sanwa JLF, I'm not sure how the respective Seimitsu gates compare to each other.

Thanks for the info.

Should have clarified I was talking about street fighter.

With the trials it's the execution that gets me. I main adon and around trial 17 or 18 when it comes to simple 4-5 move combos I can never time them right or I won't be fast enough moving the analogue stick. And when I am fast enough I lose the combo timing.

Fadc, forget about it. I can't pull that shit off to save my life.

It's probably more me than the pad. Gotta keep at it I guess

Thanks for this post. My finger has been hovering over the buy button on amazon for this stick for like a week now. The Kuro buttons were the only thing stopping me, as I have no experience with them at all. Seems like a good buy though.

Or, you know, Markman could hurry up and confirm that that Persona TE2 stick is coming out in NA soon. Ah well...

Well mods are relatively cheap at least so it's not too bad to experiment around. Ideally though you'd have a sense of what you want so you don't needlessly try everything, and I think to get a good initial sense for that you should probably just play more with a stock stick.

Reminds me of a recent SRK thread where a guy asked for mod suggestions and ended up trying a crapload of stuff (including ones that went against his theoretical ideal stick action), seemed like he was having execution issues regardless of setup. What got lost in the thread was that this was basically his first stick, so more likely than not it was just him not being used to sticks in the first place. I think he ended up being most comfortable when he reverted back to a stock JLF.

Of course there's also hitboxes which have buttons in place of a stick, and franken-fightpads (I think that's the name) which pair the left side of a standard gamepad with arcade buttons on the right.

@japtor: Enter The 36 Chambers was talking about the pad in the first place. He's a pad player and asked for impressions about arcade sticks.

Yeah no problem. I adjusted to the kuro buttons pretty fast as I find them very similar. Here's a recent SRK review on the Hayabusa stick and buttons as well: http://shoryuken.com/2014/02/24/srklabs-review-hori-hayabusa-and-kuro/. He goes into more detail on the parts if you wanna read more about them.

Yeah I realized that part way through...advice still stands if he decides to switch at least. And that's why I thought of the franken fightpads, in case the execution issue is on the button side rather than necessarily the dpad.
upgraded my stick as well with one new button and a clear balltop.
(and Harada's and Boon's signatures!)

Nice, what kind of stick is (was?) that?

I meant to ask, is there somewhere I can find stick art where the artists have given permission for you to use it? I found a couple of old stick art threads on GAF but no one stated artist' permission.

Also...how do you guys print that stuff out? I just have a garbage printer I don't use, but Iv'e got a WWE Madcatz stick I'd love to de-ugly someday.

So I managed to get a KI te2 xb1 stick and I like it.

I changed the buttons and will replace the artwork because it's pretty fugly stock.

However, my biggest gripe is that it is only compatible w/Killer Instinct! That's BS.

For example, a fun game that should not be a problem to play would be Guacamelee STCE but nothing registers as soon as it loads up (buttons as well). It works for Netflix.

I'd love to play it w/not just fighting games and I thought this would be fine but I guess not.

Very disappointing considering I could use my sticks on previous gen this way. For example I love playing ikaruga on 360 w/my mad catz fighting stick.

Who the hell do I complain to besides you guys lol?
