Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Hi all, I'm a novice at arcade sticks. Can anyone recommend a good general purpose stick for PC and MAME? I mainly play shooters, beat em ups and arcade classics, plus casual offline play of fighters. Something with quality parts would be nice (I read Seimitsu may be best for the genres I like?), a fairly compact base that isn't wide or huge, and a minimal look that doesn't look busy.

Price isn't a big factor, but maybe I'm best off getting an easily modifiable budget stick and later swapping in better parts? I've no idea and that's why I'm here. Thanks in advance for any advice!

They're on their way! Only thing to do there is remove the dust cap (already have a black one) and stick cover, and pray I ordered the right mounting plate for my Venom (wasn't sure whether to get the "S" or flat one).

Bit excited, though!

Besides buying an HRAP, the best choice right now is buying a cheap stick and putting a brook or ps4 mod in it or something.

Buying a TES+ or TE2, despite all of the hype, surprisingly seems to be the LAST thing you want to do besides using a stock ps3 stick.

It's not that MCZ needs to step their game up. We think they are on their death bed. It makes sense they'd cheap out when they've laid off so many people and are supposedly (are they?) bankrupt. So they're going to have low stock and weird issues that come from poor quality control.

So if I still wanted a TES+ or a TE2, regardless of the flaws, would the best thing to do be to get one ASAP, before Madcatz dies, or wait a while for the company to solve the issues people seem to have?

That's an SE plate on an LS-40, right? That should be the right plate for this - I used a SE-P40 to mount a LS-58 as the gap below the mount in the Venom is too shallow for a stepped plate to work.

Yeah, I think that's the SE one. It's the flat one, at any rate. Glad to hear it!

No point in waiting; from what I've read Mad Catz's TE2 sticks have been suffering from these same problems for years. Most people just don't seem to be bothered by them.

Only issue I have with my TE2+ is the creaky case if I put pressure in specific spots, nothing game breaking or whatever though.

Hey gaf I need some help and this seems like the place.
Today is my birthday and I ordered a Pro Xtension Sit Down Cabinet. It comes with their own board. Halfway through my party yesterday, one of the leds on Player 2 went out. It was the "Select" button. Is anyone familiar with this board that they could help a newbie with fixing the problem? Here are some pics. Thanks!

I've called every retail store in Dublin, even the second hand ones, not a single fight stick in stock for any console :-(

Ideally I want the new RAP4 but amazon uk only have the one with Kuro buttons.

Check out the hori real arcade pro ex-se. It was a 360 stick with seimitsu parts.

Thanks for the responses, brook universal board seems great except the price is more than double what I was looking at.

I'm not quite sure what a pad hacked 360 is.

Is it safe to say that a basic mame board won't work?

Like this one: Arcade Game Controller USB Interface PCB Kit for Pc (Mame) / Ps3 to Mame - 1 Player Only Plus

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UDHS63I/?tag=neogaf0e-20
That looks kinda like the $12 one on Focus Attack, kinda curious how the latency on that one compares.

In theory it'd work, but presumably it shows up as whatever standard USB controller input, while iirc SFV only supports Xinput or whatever (i.e. Xbox controllers). You could map it to a keyboard with whatever software to work but some people have mentioned they introduce some extra latency. Whether it's noticeable or not I have no clue.

Quality parts in a compact base is increasingly rare it seems, so yeah your best bet might be a budget stick (seems like the only compact ones left are those) and modding it yourself. I'm not sure what the current options are, but an older one is the MadCatz SE, which came in at least SFIV and WWE versions (...just look into how to rip off the artwork). Don't limit yourself to looking for that one though, you might like one of the fancier larger ones if you see them. And as long as something is moddable easily enough, don't worry about whatever system it's for cause you can drop in whatever controller board.

Online prices tend to be inflated for older sticks, but people have had good luck with used ones on Craigslist, like someone recently here got a high end one in great condition for pretty cheap I think.

Otherwise there's the full custom route if you have the tools for it, make whatever the hell you want.

Huh never seen that stick. But those controller boards look awfully like the PS360+, look up the wiring diagrams for that thing and that might be a start.

What else is lit up on the stick? The PS360+ LED functions are just for the player 1-4 indicator (I think?) so it might be relying on something else. Could be a basic loose wiring thing or LED for the button going out, trace the wire from the button and see if something seems off I guess.

After I saw that the RAP Kai now has Hayabusa buttons, I had to take the plunge. Have five sticks already but I've wanted to try the Hayabusa lever too. Ordered it from Amazon last week and it should arrive shortly.

Hayabusa buttons have been great. Super responsive, like Sanwas, at the lightest touch. The matte finish/lower profile initially takes some getting used to but that's it. Really smooooth, like them a lot.

Fixed my TES+ and now it works fine but I'm still gonna return it to Amazon.

Unless someone from GAF wants to buy it from me, PM me if so.

Will do. Player 1-4 light up and Start, Select, and Menu have LEDs in the buttons. Tried tracing the wires and everything seems secure. I'm thinking it was a bum led but I've never messed with these before so I'm a little over my head.

teyah says that a Japanese tester who uses the same method he and other Japanese testers use, that they concluded that the new Hori line is much, much better in terms of input lag.

As new users, input lag is probably one of the last things we should be worrying about.

this is great news. just put an order in for the pro.v hayabusa at amiami. i ended up returning my rap4 kai because of this problem a few months ago and decided to pass on the vlx kuro. can't wait to try the new buttons.

i hear the new vlx hayabusa has build quality issues compared to the kuro model. i'm also not a huge fan of the viewlix c panel design. hopefully they'll make something nicer for their next run (ps4 version of vlx diamond maybe! please?), i've been wanting to get one of those for ages.

Maybe it's just because of how often I've been using it and such but I feel like my Hori RAP 4 is far and away better than both my Madcatz TE and Fightstick Pro, kuro buttons and all >.>

Also, the hate that the Kuro buttons get is unwarranted, they're great.

Did some research on the TE2 Xbox One problem.
I want to use it mainly for PC, and read that there are problems with RT and LT not being recognized or switched, also read that Microsoft is gonna fixing it with the 3rd Season of KI this coming month.
Is there a way to circumvent the problem with the switched RT and LT buttons?
Like soldering them differently? I already ordered the TE2 Xbox One, so yeah..

With Windows 10 you have to install an old version of an xbox 360 controller driver, then you have to switch the wires around, LB with RT I think. That will give you 6 usable buttons. With the TE2 you can just unclip wires and move them around.

I'm using Windows 8.1, do you know if the stick works there also without problems?
Okay I will remember that when the stick is arriving here.

What do you plan on getting instead of the TES+?

Currently have the TE2+ ordered on amazon but reading all the negatives about the two new sticks has me concerned.

Hey guys quick question:

I was hoping if I could slightly extend the height of my joystick. Is there any simple mod out there that I could buy that could extend the length of the shaft? Maybe something where I can unscrew the ball, screw in the extender and then screw the ball back on top?

Hopefully I don't have to purchase an entirely new square-gate joystick just because I need a quarter inch height extension.

Thank you

does anyone know of a way to use a ps4 controller (to chat with friends) and use an arcade stick at the same time?

I am trying to get my turtle beach px3's to work, but the sound cuts in and out quite frequently. not sure how the chat sounds though.
And if anyone needs the info, I have a modded stick, brook pcba and hori xbone pad.

thanks

Just a question, what is the difference between the RAP 4 Kai and the RAP V by Hori?
What is also a better shop AmiAmi or Play-Asia regarding sticks?
I'm in Germany.

Kai has more space between lever and buttons. Not sure what else is different. Just ordered rap kai v4 from Amazon.de myself, no need to buy from Japan.

i don't think there's any way to pass chat through the arcade stick unless you have a ds4 padhack

Update on the squeaky stick on my TE2+.

Took off square gate and cleaned it off a little and it didn't squeak. Didn't seem to be a microswitches issue but I cleaned those off just in case they could cause an issue down the road. I'll have to play some more with it to see if the squeak comes back.

Happy with stick personally. The squeaky stick isn't really any fault of MCZ. The creaky top can be annoying sometimes but I don't really notice it too much honestly. The ease of opening up the stick is a nice trade off for me personally.

Anyone have any impressions on the TE2+ VS TES+?

hello. does anyone have this stick or know roughly how big it is? i'm really interested in purchasing it and i would like to know what other stick would be about the size of this one. thanks in advance!

http://arcadeshock.com/products/bla...-game-show-2015-exclusive?variant=16279363713

That stick looks like the small KOF XII stick. Here's an old pic of the stick, which I had two of them, next to my other sticks for size comparison:

It's small for my lap. I used them on tabletops. At least, the BB one have Sanwa parts. The KOFXII stick had a terrible joystick and buttons.

Who's fault is it then? I don't understand this statement. They are selling a product, if they outsource parts of the product you still need to have QA (especially if you are selling it as a 'premium product")

When I went over some challenges of the stick I had to keep the perspective they are selling this gaming device for $350 (in Canada after taxes comes to about $400). If you lose perspective of the product price it can completely change how you would weigh any negative factors.

thanks for the replies! i'm gonna order this soon. i'll post pics when i receive it. i tried looking on Youtube for videos about it but there was none unfortunately

Been looking at some 360 sticks for PC, is this a decent one?

"Mad Catz Xbox 360 Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition"

I can get a decent price on a used one. I'm a noob when it comes to sticks, ID like to get better than a Hori Mini 4 but not spend crazy money.

There are quite a few 360 sticks on eBay, which ones from that era are considered good? There is also a couple marvel v capcom ones that looks decent. A mad catz TE and a Hori one.

That being said are these sticks better than the Hori arcade kai pro 4?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just confused on what to get!

I was playing on my cab the other day and noticed some squeakiness (or other noise) when playing, pretty sure I've had similar noise on my other Sanwas, so I wouldn't necessarily blame MadCatz for that stuff.*

...but I think the point would still stand for the other complaints mentioned that's directly under their control, like all the stuff about the casing. For that price you're approaching (or reached?) custom stick territory. I wouldn't expect that good or anything, but I'd still expect something better than what people have been describing.

*Back to the sounds though, at least in my case I'm guessing it's something flexing and/or rubbing, which could be a lot of stuff besides the micro switches. Like the main body, gate clips, gate against the main body, actuator against gate, spring on actuator, stick cup/socket, etc. (...I think that's everything?)
