Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

I replaced the buttons and joystick on my TVC stick with Sanwa parts. It was my first time replacing all those parts. The hardest part was pushing the new buttons in. The whole process was pretty easy after watching some Youtube videos. I think it looks much better and it also feels much better. What do you guys think?

Looks good! And yeah the Sanwas are a big improvement over the TVC stock parts (sorry MarkMan). Are you going to replace the art too?

Absolute easiest (but not cheapest) method is the TE Kitty from Godlike Controls - installation requires only a screwdriver and a pair of scissors. Looks like it's out of stock at the moment though. (You should also specify which version of TE you have.)

Thanks. Since they're out I'm thinking I might as well just go ahead and buy a ps3 stick..
Got kinda lazy looking at the instructions anyway. lol

Looks nice. How much did you spent on those sanwa parts in total?

I mean, I'm a total noob and think the stick and the buttons do their job quite well (they feel good to me), so is it really much better?

The whole TVC stick was soo cheap when I bought it. I think I payed just 22 Euro. I think it was a great price.

Not unless it gets messed up. I kind of like the art.

The stick with balltop and washer and 8 buttons with shipping was about $46. I got it all from http://www.arcadespareparts.com . I usually don't like ordering stuff from Hong Kong, but they had good prices and got the stuff to me in 11 days.

The stick is so much looser and clickier than the original and the buttons are so much softer and squishier to push. I love it.

Anyone know if those TvC sticks will work on the Wii U? If so I'll try to snatch one up sometime in anticipation of things like Tekken Tag 2 and other titles.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't. :X

Awesome because those are some SUPER cheap sticks and easy to mod. Markman is there anything special like a TE stick coming that maybe should keep me from pulling the trigger on this? No specifics being asked here, but do you feel I should hold off?

That's going to depend on the game. Don't assume that just because it can support it, it will support it. Namco still has to program in support for Wii controllers. I've asked Harada about this on Twitter a few times and he has not responded.

There is a MC TTT2 TE stick coming to Wii U. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=489313

For those who are familiar with Japanese retail, are sticks readily available from brick and mortar electronic/videogame stores? (Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera) Or would I have to find a specialist retailer?

I'm interested in picking up a stick for my PS3 there. In addition, are there any Hori sticks for PS3 that come with stock Seimitsu parts?

So I screwed up. This is my first time modding a stick & I opened my arcade stick today to add replacement buttons and tighten my spring for my stick.

When i went to open the spring portion there is That really small clamp holding the entire mechanism together at the bottom tip. I pried it open a little too forcefully and it flew somewhere and I can't find it. I'm still looking for it... but worst case scenario I can't find it, does anyone know where I can buy a stand alone replacement? Is it something I can pick up at a local hardware store? Thanks in advance.

Perhaps one of the most...odd collection of arcade sticks you'll see around here:

That's an NES Advantage to the left, a MAS PlayStation 1/2 stick in the center, a Mad Catz Nintendo 64 fight/flight stick combo on the top right, and an ASCiiWARE PlayStation stick.

I got the NES Advantage back in the day at Toys "Я" Us, I think. I still have the box for it, as you can see, complete with the little booklets and everything. I rarely ever use the stick, though. I prefer to just play with the classic NES gamepad.

I got the Mad Catz one from a friend for free. I had the box for it, but I lost it while I was moving. I don't really use it for anything besides the Mortal Kombat games on the N64...and maybe sometimes Pilot Wings 64. Hah. It's not great, but it does the job well enough for casual play.

I got the ASCiiWARE one from a local game store about 5-6 years ago for $16. This was my main stick for a good while...

...until March this year, when I found the MAS stick at a flea market for an incredible $10. These things normally go for way more than that. $150+ at least, from what I've seen. That is now my main stick, and damn what a stick it is! I use it for all of my arcade/fighting game needs on my PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 with a USB adapter. I also use it on my PC, which is why it's on my desk there. Hah.

I may eventually get a Mad Catz stick for my Xbox 360, though I'm not sure yet. It's either that, or an Xtokki adapter for my MAS stick.

In. Preordered. I've been waiting for something like this!

Pre-ordered. Looks like I'll be liquidating a lot of sticks soon.

Mostly for MAME, and since I'd like a 2-player setup, I'm about to pre-order an xarcade stick (out of stock atm). Does anybody have any experience with it, and should I be expecting to change out the sticks and buttons. I've never had an arcade stick before.

I've been hearing remarkably good things about the Hit Box (http://www.hitboxarcade.com/). I'm not exactly keen on paying $225 + shipping for the one that works on any system (including PC). Is it worth the painful expense?

BJ
In short, yes.

In long: the hitbox is a stroke of genius. With a little acclimation, everything you can do on a stick or dpad can be done on a hitbox. Faster and more efficiently to boot!

SRK's are trivial in SSFIV and SFXT, and recent discoveries with SOCD (simultaneous opposing cardinal direction) cleaning have them nearly as easy to do in EVERY game. Dashing has also seen some tech advancements as well.

The only character type I struggle with are grapplers. They're not impossible by any means, but they definitely have a higher learning curve than others.

3d games also work well with it. There's a review from Aris (well known Tekken player) where he trashes the hitbox for being TOO good. Think about that for a minute.

I've got the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Wii stick and a PS3 Hori stick if anyone is interested. :)

For a long time I had a stick for each console, but just haven't really had a good place to place them and play so I've been selling them to friends for pretty cheap.

Interested as in, for sale? Post in the for sale thread with a price and I'd probably be interested in both if you're selling for a fair price.

Nice, congrats on that pickup. I'm thinking about putting RG's in a customized hrap I'm doing.

thanks, and yeah they really are great switches. The difference is subtle but ultimately they are a more solid sort.

post pics of that project when it's through, I'm a sucker for the old school HRAPs. It's funny, they only recently have become out of phase but I think of them as collectors' items. I recently was at a friend's session and he pulled out the original original mirror panel HRAP which he's now selling to me. Got a ways to go, but I'm lucky to have started by tackling the most uncommon ones first.

That's what I was wondering. Thanks very much!

I'll have to hunt down that Aris review of the Hit Box, I think he's funny when he isn't being totally stupid.

X-Arcade's stock parts are janky (although modifiable with better ones) and it's weird with converter compatibility. You might as well take the convenient yet a bit pricier route and get either two sticks from Mad Catz or Hori.

So my first time modding a stick is still a shitty experience.

Thank you to Oni Link 666 for relaying the website to get that stupid clamp. I finally got it and reassembled the whole thing together and then I decided to test it out on the PS3....

Guess what, my PS3 is no longer recognizing it! At first I got a message saying that there is too much power coming in from the USB ports and the PS3 has reached its limit or something like that. I unplugged it and plugged and plugged it back in but this time I'm not getting any response.

I try to hook it up to the PC, and thankfully the PC responds to it and I can play on an emulator.... BUT the computer isn't receiving any inputs from the joystick. Here is a picture:

iY8HiKKQiAMDy.jpg

I dunno what to do, I think I'll try to post something up on tech tack @ SRK and hope someone has an answer.

how exactly was it modded from the original? It's looking like a button swap?

edit:

saw your earlier post. That's pretty strange. If the electronics are stock and you didn't do anything other than change out the buttons---I'm guessing you didn't remove the joystick at all---then there really should be no issue. When you say the computer isn't receiving any inputs from the joystick, do you mean just the JLF or from the whole stick including the buttons?

Yeah I switched the buttons and opened the JLF to stretch the spring. But then I put it back together.... Maybe I screwed up in the reassembly? Yeah, when I tried it on the PC, the buttons were responding, but the JLF inputs wouldn't register at all.

I guess it's better if I reassemble the entire thing... but it doesn't make sense. It feels perfect when I play with it. Only thing that registers is that component under the gate which has the switches... and I have no idea if that thing is the problem or not... I have no idea what to do. :(

The only thing I can think of is that you either connected the joystick ribbon backwards or you shorted out that board on the joystick somehow. Can you mess those up with static shocks like you can with computer parts? Maybe you messed the cable up when pulling it out? I'd try connecting the cable in the other way. Maybe watch some youtube videos on the process to see if you missed connecting anything. If that doesn't solve it, you might have to get a new joystick. All the start, select, home, and face buttons work, right?

Start, Home, L3, R3, Select, Face buttons all work. Only thing that isn't working is the Joystick directional buttons. All when I tried Last Blade 2 on the emulator.

I'm a total noob at this equipment... so I have no idea what the static shocks are. I tried to connect the joystick ribbon in the opposite direction and nothing happened.

If the board was shorted then would that mean that the buttons don't work? But I still don't know why the PS3 doesn't recognize it at all including the face buttons when the PC at least registers the face buttons only. Neither of them recognize the joystick movements.

I used this youtube video to guide my way into repairing it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K2ONYAapOQ

Even though I have the T6HRAP, it was assembled exactly like the TE above.

could you ensure that the joystick is set to digital (D/L/R switch), and map the joystick again within the emulator to see if you get a response? If it works at that point, then the PS3 issue may be simpler than you think.

Oh, OK. Sounds like maybe there's something wrong with that little panel where you switch the stick from analog to d-pad and stuff then. I don't even know if those things can be replaced.

I'm going to assume it's not just that you have it set to left analog stick or something. :P

Yeah, even when I switch from Dpad to Analogue the Emulator still isn't getting the signal. Man... WTF did I do????

Yeah, I'm gonna make a post on SRK and see if anyone can help there. THanks for trying to help regardless guys :)

Yeah, I always keep all 8 buttons in sticks that come that way stock. Too many devs are making games that may feel fun on a stick but require every goddamn button on a PS360 controller. Bloodrayne Betrayal is a blast on an arcade stick, but it requires no less than 8 buttons.
