Also, the clumps are fine, you can just say 'tied for first place', etc.

You can also just do tie breaker votes?

I dunno, asking people to revote may or may not work, since not everyone will do it.
Yeah, I can't decide if the clumps bother me or not. I know they'll break up a bit as more votes come in, but I should've had people vote for multiples to begin with. Maybe I'll leave it for now and do tie breakers if it comes down to that. Might be cool to announce ties when they come up in the countdown and have 24 hours of voting to decide the tie breaker. I'll mull it over.

...haha, I overthink everything.

Literally no.

Maybe just do another poll altogether? It's easier imo to just vote again, rather than send a PM or post here. Then maybe you can compare the statistics between the results sets afterwards.

Nope. Actual events aren't necessary around here. This thread runs on pure hype.

hmm, I can see two sides to this:

georly has a good point that if you open the poll up to multiple voting now, some of the 100-odd people who've already voted won't vote again.

On the other hand, if you end up with a number of big clumps like that, then there may be no way to get a clear winner. Even a tie breaker may not help because a bunch of people may not care enough about the tied characters to vote one way or the other. For example, if there's a tie between between, say, Fox and Shiek and Marth, I probably wouldn't vote because I'm not really interested in any of those characters, and there's no sense in voting if I don't have a clear preference. Giving everyone three votes from the beginning could help reduce these clumps so they never become a problem at all.

...then again, this probably is overthinking it - an attempt to make a very unscientific poll rigidly scientific.

Edit: Again, the double. I forget that I'm in a new post when quoting, and I have to copy, go back, and edit.
We're all judging you very harshly.

Perhaps. Not sure if people would be annoyed to vote again, but if I just make it a quick poll it may be worth it.

Haha, I know, I always overthink this type of stuff. This sounds cheesy, but I like stuff that brings the community together, so I really want to do this in the best way possible. It's just a small competition, but the wait between Smash titles is always exciting and I'd like to have all the fun we can with it.

Hey guys, quick question for you. I just did my first tally up of everyones votes for the Favrorite Character Poll I'm doing and we already have 125 votes, which is crazy! Thanks for all the participation.

However, one issue that I should have anticipated is that, with everyone only choosing one character, there tend to be clumps of characters with the same amount of votes (meaning, I have 3 characters that all have 7 votes, 5 that all have 3, etc.). In order to split the amounts up a bit and also create a more accurate picture who's really the more liked characters are, I was thinking of letting people choose their top three characters instead of just 1.

I was thinking you rank them 1st / 2nd / 3rd and each rank would award a different amount of points. 1st would get 3, 2nd 2, and 3rd 1. I feel like this would help split the groups up and let people represent more of the characters they like. Obviously if you've already voted, I'll set it up where you can send me your second 2 picks and I'll make the necessary point changes to your first pick.

What do you guys think? Does that sound like a good plan?

Works for me!

I wouldn't think people would care that much about voting again... that's just me though. The trickier part is avoiding repeated votes I guess.

But it doesn't have to be scientific, just interesting. Even with some issues, it should be able to show trends. Picking three should open it up a lot, I think.

Out of curiosity, are there any iconic Nintendo items that have yet to be included in Smash Bros.? The Cucco, Bombchu, Fairy Bottle, Spiny Shell, Super Leaf, and a few others were long overdue, but what else is left?

Yeah, I think I'll just start a new poll. If someone doesn't vote in the new one, I'll just still count their vote from the first one towards whoever they chose as their favorite character. And, yeah, no point in pretending this is a scientific study! Just for fun and to get a ballpark figure of who are the more liked characters.

Uh... Good question. The candle from Zelda 1? Donkey Kong's bananas? Full Restore? Nintendogs Tennis Ball? The flowers from Yoshi's Island? I'm pretty sure we got all the non-redundant, worthwhile ones. Maybe an argument can be made for the Candle working like Mario's Fire Orb, but we got a lot of Zelda items, as well as the Fire Bar Sword for flame-based weaponry.

Oh! I guess there's also the Zapper, but it was just flat-out a gun called "Gun" in Japan. Hopefully it finds use in a certain somedog's moveset...

They're pretty good now that basically all of the MK items are there. E Tank?

Iconic? I guess that depends on the definition, but sure, there are a few. Some of them are kinda impossible to implement, like mario transformation items (tanooki suit, frog suit, penguin suit, etc) because they'd require alt costumes for each and every playable character. Zelda still doesn't have the candle/lamp, the wooden sword (think weaker beam sword), fishing rod, and the fire rod. I'm not hugely familiar w/ kirby, so i'm not sure what else he could use that isn't already implemented. Fire emblem could use a few items, like the glass weapons, the teleport rod, and maybe a few others. And of course, don't forget pokemon held items, like berries and leftovers.

I kinda want the barrel cannon back as an item, though it is usually repped in DK stages.

Maybe a leaf from Animal Crossing that can turn into various furniture.

The 1up Mushroom comes to mind, but I don't know what function it could have (other than being yet another healing item.)

That would really make the 1-up something. It feels a lot of times like it's treated that way in Mario. You find it in these hard to reach places. Then out side of the first (and maybe 2/2USA) they don't matter at all.

It could also give you an extra point in time battle and bonus mode.

It could just give you another stock in stock mode. Sounds annoying to me, but could be fun with the right group.
Was going to say this.

It would not be more overpowered than items that can ko every other player easily, like some Final Smashes
(coughsonic)

You don't have to tell me. I like items on, but we always turn off healing items and the dragoon. I guess I can add the Daybreak to that list.

I wish there were more 'non-items' like food, sandbag, and smoke bomb. I like putting them in as filler w/ 1-2 good items, like smash ball, so that you don't keep getting the good items over and over.

Of course, this would all be fixed if you could set frequency on items.

Yeah, we really need a frequency setter. It's so weird, as there's already one in place for music, just give it to items as well.

Has there been any word on custom stages for this game? Replaying Brawl and seeing my many
horrible
custom stages made me think about whether the system should return. Although it was pretty basic, I definitely had some fun times creating and playing my stages.

There seems to be a theme of customization in SSB4, so I think it would be a shame if custom stages didn't make it back. The system just needs to be fleshed out a little so you can add some personality into the custom stages.

No word yet. I never used it in Brawl, but I'd love to see it fleshed out. The Gamepad is just too perfect for it.

I wish they had more Nintendo themed sky boxes for custom levels. The three generic ones were so generic you couldn't really do anything with them besides making like "Death Mountain" or some kind of factory.

They should have more skyboxes, and more nintendo-themed props.

Also the ability to download other's custom levels so you can play them together online.

Same. If they could do series theme custom stages, I'd love that. But, that seems like something Sakurai would never do.

I want chance time from Mario Party to be represented. What could be more fun that your stock levels being swapped at any given moment?

What's nice about Smash 4 is nearly every level will have a "static" sky box type background because of the Final Destination modes, so having the ability to more or less use any background from any map would be entirely feasible.

But won't happen.

I can just see it appearing across the stage and sliding toward the edge. Then everyone falls over themselves to go chase after it, lol.

Yeah, like Ridley.

I mean, if you want Ridley to be an item setting, then sure, because that's what i was talking about.

Would be an amazing idea for a mario party stage. When the timer is less than 1 minute or when someone hits their last stock, a random shuffle appears that distributes stock or percentage or does nothing.
