Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

Am I the only one that misses older things like Board the platforms , Race to the Finish , Break the Targets , Melee's Adventure mode and fighting characters in duels after meeting requirements to potentially unlock them?

It was boring that characters just appeared unlocked in brawl and no challenger approaching screen for each character.

I was playing 64 and melee again and these things just keep bringing back memories.

I'm 99% sure Brawl had the same way to unlock characters as Melee if you ignored the SSE until you unlocked everyone.

Play vs to unlock in brawl and challengers approach.

I miss character specific break the targets, race to the finish, and board the platforms as well

I remember that they just appeared on screen after requirements were met.

Edit: Guess SSE distracted me from doing it that way , in older games playing certain modes didn't stop you from seeing it.

Please don't kill my vibe.

Pic of the day. Here's the trophy gallery for the 3DS version. You can rotate the trophies by drawing circles on the bottom screen. Super Smash Bros. Brawl had tons of trophies, but rumor has it that the 3DS version alone may have more than Brawl. Looks like the Dr. Wily that we made from scratch for the 3DS version is on his knees in disbelief.

Here's something new--the trophy shop. If you're having a hard time getting certain trophies, why not just buy them? They sometimes go on sale, too.

HOLY SHIT
A TROPHY SHOP
3DS VERSION ALONE HAS MORE TROPHIES THAN BRAWL
HOLY SHIIEEEEET
Wait... THOSE Play Coins? The ones you get by running?
Looks like I'm officially about to get in shape.

yup, at 0:36 of the 3DS trailer, you can see the enemies are Mii and the Mii heads are on the top left of the screen.

Multi-Man Mii confirmed.

Multi-Man Mii confirmed.

That could be an event match or a classic/adventure mode stage

So did people here already read the Famitsu scans? We get the conformation for some costume moves of the new (old) characters:

Wii Fit Trainer - Neutral B
Pushing Sun Worship: This variant is slower and pushes opponents back while hitting them multiple times.
Concentrate Sun Worship: This variant charges faster but doesn't heal you.

Little Mac - Neutral B
Numbing Straight: When fully powered it stuns opponents, but Mac loses the super armor while charging.
Engulfing Fire Straight: Adds flame effect, charges faster, but deals less damage

Rosalina and Luma - Down B
Catch & Release : She pulls in opponents and tosses them away, but no longer attracts items.
Guardian Luma: Luma gets larger, heavier and stronger for a short time.

Pit - Neutral B
Penetrating Arrow : A large arrow, which flies straight foreword and can't be controlled, but pierces through multiply opponents.
Free Bow: This arrow can be controlled complete freely in any direction, but is slower and weaker. We already saw this one, but through it would travel in circles.

I like Guardian Luma and would hope, that other costume moves have such interesting twists.

Look at the design on the coins. The Play Coins have a 3DS on them and the Smash Coins have a crown on them.

You get Smash Coins from the various modes and achievements in game while Play Coins will act as an alternative currency that can be exchanged for Smash Coins / Free Trophies / etc.

They are two separate things.

My post before got buried by the potd
and NOT because no one cared
so I'm just gonna quote it.

Looking at the list of newcomers, I like that they're almost all 'modern Nintendo'.

You've got Mii's and Wii Fit Trainer, an Animal Crossing rep, a modern Pokemon rep, two modern Fire Emblem reps, Palutena to rep the Kid Icarus revival, Rosalina as a modern Mario character, and if rumours are true we've got Shulk and Chorus Men too.

It's just Little Mac (who could be seen as a modern character anyway with the Wii game and all) and the third parties showing off the more retro side of Smash.

Brawl was very different as Melee was still lacking major characters like Wario, Diddy Kong, Dedede, Meta Knight, and Pokemon Trainer/Charizard.

The only characters in that vein left are Ridley and K Rool really, and Mewtwo coming back.

I like it tbh.

I will definitely be using these two.

What is everyone's favorite stages in the series?

Mine are :

64
Dream land
Hyrule castle
Peach's Castle
Yoshi's Island
Saffron City

Melee
Fountain of Dreams
Pokemon Stadium
Mushroom kingdom/Princess Peach's castle
Battlefield
Final Destination
Fourside
Big Blue

Brawl
Battlefield
Final Destination
Pictochat
Delfino Plaza
Castle Siege
Pirate Ship
Smashville

I would like to see some of it reappear in smash 4 as classic stages , hopefully Fountain of Dreams is on Wii U version. That has always been my favorite stage. But somehow it could appear on 3ds version or not at all...

Am I the only one who's most concerned about trophy spoilers?

I've never been one to hide myself from the secret characters or stages, but discovering the trophies is half of the fun of trophies to me.

People don't really talk or post them that much for me to be worried about them being spoiled.

So if I get the Japanese version and try to play with someone in the same time zone (e.g. Anth0ny), will there be a bunch of lag? I assume the game will be hosted on one of our devices and not a server in Japan.

What's that symbol next to Dr Wily's name?
Hmm, probably related to the type of trophy, maybe? (Or perhaps the type of lighting?)

It's not the series symbol, since you can see that faintly behind the flavor text.

Trophy shop is cool. Are stickers officially deconfirmed?
I wasn't a big fan of stickers, despite the cool art, so I wouldn't be disappointed. I think that's part of the reason there are more trophies. (Trophies are cooler anyway.)

What a boring choice. I think Sakurai chose the defaults based on casual play, so it bugs me that he ignores competitive play. Teleports and counters are so common, we need some fireworks and jump glides.

Why does this thinking always pop up? There is no 'Sakurai hates the competitive players' conspiracy so stop making it out like there is. Sakurai himself is more pro than most people (seeing as he can play the game on two controllers at a time) and he does most of the playtesting thus I wouldn't say decisions are based on "casual play".

I think Miiverse stamps will replace stickers. Stickers were only really useful for SSE, which is omitted from this title. Prepare for a lot of fart Miiverse posts.

At no point did I say that he hates competitive players, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't twist and exaggerate my statements. What I DID say was that it felt like Sakurai wasn't aware of the problems of customized movesets in tournaments, and as such figured that it wouldn't really matter what the default moves were, because people could switch whenever they liked.

1. Awesome trophy, even though I wanted more.

2. The fact that the 3DS version alone will have more trophies than Brawl is amazing to me. I seriously love curling up and reading through these when I'm done binge Smashing, so this is great.

3. For the love of god Snake is back, And if he isn't WHAT THE FUCK. Sakurai, along with the Rayman trophy, obviously has more flexibility with 3rd parties than ever.

So I think there will only be 6 trophies for sale at any given time. It doesn't look like there's any arrow to scroll, and the trophies look randomly sorted. I'm guessing it'll be like the Kid Icarus Uprising weapon shop where it refreshes every time a chapter match is completed. Or other objectives. Rarer trophies might appear with more difficult tasks, like how stronger weapons would appear in Uprising.

Glad to see you fully appreciate the awesomeness of this update. I look forward to a good word for it in the GameXplain recap at the end of the week! :-)

You will not be disappointed. :) I will be raving about this in the end-of-week discussion!
