The hope for a Golden Sun playable character died when Dark Dawn crashed and burned critically and commercially. The sooner y'all accept that the better.

I was told there'd be special surprises...
Bowser S-tier was the special surprise.

I don't care about Golden Sun or its characters, but there is still hope for a playable character for that series.

I would take an Advance Wars rep instead of a Golden Sun one, though

How does Greninja even die here? It looks like Snorlax shoots out a jolt of lightning towards him.
Greninja moved towards the centre.

I don't remember Punch Out Wii being a barn burner sales wise either. Also I don't think critical reception has any impact on if a character would be put into Smash.

No, it doesn't, but he's still never getting in.

I've content myself with that fact for awhile now, at this point I don't expect any newcomers besides Shulk and a RH character (chorus men or marshal). Also lets not get crazy and say NEVER on any character especially when the door is open for dlc and future titles.

How adorable, still holding out hope :P

Seriously though when I say critical reception I'm including not just stuff like reviews but how the community at large (forums, etc.) felt about the game. People who played Punch Out Wii feel almost unanimously positive about it. The same is not true about Dark Dawn. There's a difference between pulling a character from a source that is niche/not well known and one that is actively disliked. For the sales argument I'd have to look up Punch Out Wii's sales but I do know Dark Dawn's were AWFUL so........yeah.

Little Mac also has legacy and zeitgeist working in his favor. Even people who no longer or never gamed know about Little Mac due to the influence of Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the NES. The same can't be said about the Golden Sun series. Had Dark Dawn been a hit and we had a sequel in the works, I'd put the odds at Golden Sun representation at VERY HIGH. Given how the series has fared in the last few years? Be happy with your assist trophy.

Never say never but the series only got an assist trophy last time and the series has only fallen in prominence despite the release of a new game :/

Yeah I used "never" too liberally. I think the day Wii Fit Trainer got in you basically have to have very good evidence to say definitively "___ won't be in"

It would be neat if an Advance Wars character was a command character like Rosalina. Except, the puppets were more disposable and more were out simultaneously. Send certain troop types out with the right attacks and they march into battle until they perish, like in the AT.

As I said above I don't expect a GS character in this game, or anyone besides for Shulk or a RH character, but I do think we could see a GS character in a future game or as dlc down the line. And lets be honest here, most people didn't know little mac from mike tyson's punch out or punch out wii, they knew him as the boxer guy from brawl <_< that is also a fairly niche franchise and a character sakurai considered for both melee and brawl saying no both times before finally including him in this game.

I don't think Shulk and a Rhythm Heaven rep (who could be anyone at this point) are the only remaining reps. I still believe there is a Metroid and a Zelda newcomer. *shrugs*

Shulk and RH rep being the only newcomers left would be so incredibly boring after all the hope that the Falcon reveal trailer brought.

We'll get Ray MK II, a Dragon Quest rep, and Chibi Robo before we ever get Isaac, mark my words.

Considering how Custom Robo is even more dead then GS considering they haven't made a game in that franchise in 8 years, yes between now and the next Smash Bros a lot could change but there is even less reason to think we'll ever see a playable Custom robo character. I think one would be perfect for dlc though which is where I feel these more niche characters would do very well.

I think any future multi-characters need to have something unique about them, since everyone so far has:
Ice Climbers: A double character.
Zelda/Sheik: Transform easily at will, lose one move due to this.
Samus/ZSS: Can't transform as easily at will, but retain a full moveset.
Pokemon Trainer: Transform at will, 3 characters, but need to rotate at the right times to stay healthy.
Pikmin & Olimar: A command character, Pikmin are fairly disposable, but Olimar can't do jack without them.
Rosalina & Luma: Lumas can be regenerated, fight farther away from you, but require you to space them out to where you want them to be.

I don't think Shulk and a Rhythm Heaven rep (who could be anyone at this point) are the only remaining reps. I still believe there is a Metroid and a Zelda newcomer. *shrugs*

I'm expecting Zelda to have a newcomer, as well as Metroid or DK (possibly both, but at least one of them). I don't think any other existing franchises will have any full newcomers. Maybe an unexpected clone, but no full ones.

Custom Robo DLC would be perfect. He'd work so great with customizable parts.

Also, don't know if anyone mentioned this earlier, but some Smash commentator (think it was Prog) mentioned that they think customizable parts should be allowed, so long that they don't take much time to set up. They think it could help balance out the characters.

I am not expecting... or better, I am not confident we are getting a DK newcomer, but I would love to be wrong. King K. Rool in Smash would be amazing.

Shulk and RH rep being the only newcomers left would be so incredibly boring after all the hope that the Falcon reveal trailer brought.

All it did for me was establish gematsu had outdated information, or is bad at naming characters from series he doesn't know. I feel 90% sure we'll see all the newcomers before launch in cinematic trailers, and I feel 90% sure that Sakurai's comment about us being near the end of the newcomer videos means we have at best 2-3 left. If we get confirmation of a non shulk/rh newcomer then I'll slowly be a bit more optimistic.

Yes we could have some hidden clone newcomers like Impa as a Shiek clone or Dark pit as a pit clone, but I don't think that's going to excite very many people.

I'll gladly take Pitoo in lieu of not being able to play as the true dark lord, Hades.

Gematsu leak being wrong about Chrom and never mentioning Rosalina are reasons enough for me to believe his info about the game aren't reliable. I am not saying the leak was fake, only that it doesn't cover all newcomers present in the game.

Btbx5srCQAABcno.jpg

Anyone worried Mega Man will be F tier? I've never seen him win a fight in any of the demos.

I wouldn't read much into a demo build from probably April or May, especially on the newcomers when no one knows how to use them. I imagine Meta Knight would have been a "no kill potential/possible f tier" had brawl had the extensive demo coverage smash 4 had. There is a reason why most of the characters we saw doing well were vets that people already had a firm idea how to play.

This has been the general consensus for a while in he competitive community now (apart from a few people that are deathly afraid about their inclusion just because sakurai banned them in anonymous online).

Still taking Rosalina to be a revealed before she could be leaked, and yes perhaps he truly didn't know her, but at best there could be 1 maybe 2 more non clone newcomers he didn't know about. Anticipating more seems like a recipe for disappointment, lest we forget "there is no way Brawl's final 3 newcomers that are hidden are two clones and ROB"

I'll take Tom Nook as a Villager clone, with Lyle replacing him in Villager's FS when Nook's on the scene... I know it's not gonna happen, but I think Animal Crossing is more than deserving of over 1 rep.

64 had 3 original unlockable characters (Jigglypuff, Ness, Captain Falcon) that were hidden until launch, iirc.
Melee had 3 original unlockable characters (Marth, Mr. Game & Watch, Mewtwo) that were hidden until launch, iirc.
Brawl had 2 original unlockable characters (Lucario, R.O.B.) that were intended to be hidden until launch (though Lucario accidentally leaked) and 2 original unlockable third parties that were revealed before launch.
I fully expect SSB4 to have at least 2 original, unlockable characters that do not get revealed before launch.
(Original referring to non-clones. Jigglypuff could arguably be counted as a clone, and Wolf could arguably not be counted as one).

This has been the general consensus for a while in he competitive community now (apart from a few people that are deathly afraid about their inclusion just because sakurai banned them in anonymous online).

I was unaware. I think some custom parts could get banned (since there's also ones that adjust movement properties and such, and we don't know how heavily those can affect characters), but overall, better to be able to ban a couple of custom parts than characters.

Anyone else plan on getting Smash on Sept. 13 via a Japanese 3DS? We should make a list of Smash-GAFfers who will get it before Oct. 3 and share FRIEND CODES.

I am, though I'm waiting until mid-August to import one out of fear that the game gets delayed. I figure that a delay won't happen if it isn't announced before August 13th.

That is a possibility and as I said, I am only expecting two more non-clone newcomers (aside from Shulk who is a given, IMO... and the potential RH rep), specifically a Metroid (Ridley) and Zelda character (idk, Ghirahim or Impa?)... Though depending of who the Zelda newcomer is, she or he could pretty much be a clone as well (Impa, for example).

I was gone for a week, what did I miss outside of the daily shots?
-Melee's menu is better
-No Ness
-No Jiggs
-Permanent Bowser Time
-The game is developed by Bethesda
-It's still not Melee
Apart from these 6 posts, everything said was meaningless.

I mean I'm not sure how I'd go about proving my point in a satisfactory way nor am I trying to imply Family Guy is the pinnacle of American Comedy but I really think you underestimate how that game (Punch Out) has infiltrated into American zeitgeist. Like I wouldn't say you could pull any random stranger off the street and have them ID Little Mac but you've got a way better chance than with something like Golden Sun.

But yeah, never say never but expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised if it works out in your favor :)

Shulk and RH rep being the only newcomers left would be so incredibly boring after all the hope that the Falcon reveal trailer brought.

I agree but there's nothing any of us can do about it. Not Sakurai's fault shit got leaked (if its true).

Also, don't know if anyone mentioned this earlier, but some Smash commentator (think it was Prog) mentioned that they think customizable parts should be allowed, so long that they don't take much time to set up. They think it could help balance out the characters.

I think every reasonable person has this opinion. As long as the setup is quick and easy, everybody should want to give them a real shot.

EDIT: You mean custom moves right? Now I'm unsure.

I know the history, but we also have Sakurai's comments about not wanting the surprises ruined like what happened with Brawl's SSE and the characters that showed up during it. Its why I still think he'll reveal the full roster himself before launch.

I would LOVE more non clone newcomers then just Shulk and a RH character, I just have a gut feeling it's not going to happen and people are setting themselves up to be disappointed again same as what happened with Brawl

Impa would be SWEET even as a Sheik Clone. If Ridley or Dark Samus can't get in, I don't think I want a new Metroid Rep. All the other potential characters are actually legit too big or AWFUL.

I also have to assume there is going to be DLC for this game. Nintendo would have to be brain-damagingly stupid to not do so.

Oh, sorry I thought you meant custom moves, not the equipment, personally I don't think those should be allowed.

Wait, what if there's a piece of equipment that reduces landing lag?

That would be fucking gamechanging!

Eh. I donno. It's possible, but I think Sakurai loves surprising people enough that he'll still hide some things. I mean, Kid Icarus Uprising was damn surprising, especially
Chapter 9 and Chapter 17 or 18, can't remember,
so I think he'll still value surprises. Plus, in the E3 video:
There are many more game elements that we haven't introduced yet, but I don't think we can talk about all of them before release.
Makes me think Sakurai will keep some things a surprise. But who knows. we'll see.

It's possible, there seems to be some more metagame based ones, such as an "easy perfect shield."

So in preparation of the 3DS version, I'm gonna remap the controls so that I won't have to use the L and R buttons since they suck on the 3DS.

I'm thinking:
A = Smash Attacks
B = Special
X = Shield
Y = Jump
X+A = Grab

How does that sound?

By that logic I imagine your average Japanese person would be more likely to recognize a GS character over Punch Out. Honestly I imagine most people outside of gamers wouldn't recognize either regardless of country. We've had enough "princess/blue swordsman/etc" on tumblr/reddit to know outside of Mario/Link/etc the MAJOR characters very few video game characters are that recognizable.

Lets be honest here, had Sakurai saved the boxing ring stage for Little Mac's reveal and the gematsu leak never happened, most people would have talked about Little Mac the same way they talk about a CR, GS, or S&P rep. The one two punch of "oh hey a boxing arena stage" and "wait wut wii fit trainer didn't someone 'guess her' along with villager/mega man?" Is why a lot of people expected Little Mac.

Again I must emphasis, I don't expect a GS rep in this game outside of maybe dlc, I just don't want to get tied up in a world of "this character will never happen" and hey had the Gematsu leak not happened we'd probably be talking about Shulk in the same "probably won't happen" conversation as opposed to the "all but confirmed" one.

That's what a lot of people said about Mario Kart 8 and dlc courses and here we are, that's not to say it won't happen but so far Nintendo has been pretty open about their dlc plans for games.

I'm thinking:
A = Smash Attacks

How does that sound?

I think you're gonna need to use at least one of the shoulder buttons for shielding. I can't see Y and X being anything but jump if A is for normals and B is for specials. Using your control scheme, if you want to do an aerial as soon as you jump, then it'll be awkward to slide your thumb from Y to A instead of from X to A.

EDIT: Here's how I'm gonna map my controls:

A - Normals
B - Specials
X - Jump
Y - Jump
R - Shield
L - Grab
*Tap Jump off*

This almost mirrors my GameCube controls, but instead of jump on L, I have grab instead. I had my reasons for having jump on L in the GameCube controller, but the way the face buttons are laid out on the 3DS makes that not necessary anymore.

That's what a lot of people said about Mario Kart 8 and dlc courses and here we are, that's not to say it won't happen but so far Nintendo has been pretty open about their dlc plans for games.

And like... I'd be fairly satisfied if it didn't happen. I just don't think they'd add characters after the game is finished.

If Ridley can't get in, I don't think I want a new Metroid Rep. All the other potential characters are actually legit too big or AWFUL..
But he can. And I disagree about other characters in Metroid being awful. The hunters in Prime 3 are kinda cool (but I would take Ridley and Dark Samus as reps before any of them).

The shoulder buttons don't suck on my 3DS. Either way, I am planning to remap the buttons this way:

A = Smash
B = Special
X = Shield
Y = Grab

Or maybe

A = Grab
B = Special
X = Shield
Y = Smash

I always jump with the d-pad. :p
