Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

No, lol. All I'm saying is that the whole "he focus tested this and determined most players like X" is a flawed argument. What demographics were tested? Brand new players or old? Did they compare 64 to melee to brawls or just melee and brawl? Did they compare any of them at all? Did they see how adding and removing things effected results? Basically there are plenty of questions that are unknowable right now and we can't even begin to know the conditions of the focus testing or how extensive it was or even if it was done at all.

Ok, good I misunderstood that part of your post. My bad. You're right that I don't know all the specifics of how their focus testing was done but my experience with other competitive games has thought me a lot about how narrow our perspectives are.

I play Magic the Gathering (i.e. best TCG in the world). Whilst I mostly play casually now (I no longer have the time to travel & test), I have played at every competitive level of the game save the Pro Tour. I'm definitely in the competitive player mindset. I started about 7-8 years ago around Time Spiral block, the most complicated block they ever released. Despite being a new player, I absolutely LOVED it. However, there was a problem. While tournament attendance was steady, overall sales fell. I and everybody I knew who played Magic had no issues but Wizards of the Coast was getting a lot of direct and indirect feedback that the set was too complicated and had too many mechanics. They tired dialing it back with the next Block but there were still issues with board complexity for the casual player (me and all my Magic playing friends/acquaintances were still having a blast of course).

Declining sales and feedback from players (marketing surveys, double blind studies which Sakurai has also mentioned using, sales of course, etc.) that were essentially invisible to me caused them to implement "New World Order" which caused a shift in how certain segments of the game were designed as well as an emphasize on specific aspects of the game over others (to the dismay of some enfranchised players). The first block released under that regimen was Shards of Alara block which, IMO, was more or less trash, especially the first set. I can't say this was a direction that appealed to me at the time and WOTC has certainly made missteps from time to time since then. The overall result to the game? More successful that its ever been at both the casual and competitive levels in its 20+ year history.

Regardless of whether or not I liked what I was being told or if I believed the words of these large swaths of players I couldn't see, WOTC absolutely made the right choice. It really taught me how narrow my perspective was. Although this thread is about a fighting game and what I just recounted was about a trading card game, principles of game design do carry over. I certainly think Sakurai deserves critique for how his philosophy in Brawl was actually implemented as well as Smash 4 so far and again once we actually get the final version of it but I can totally understand his general plan (specifics would need further elaboration on by him). Skepticism about the nature of the focus testing is natural (though all companies that do this try to keep their exact nature as confidential as possible) but when people try to counter their results with "but I don't know anybody like that" I start rolling my eyes. That's the point I was trying to make - we have limited insight as just consumers and the results of the feedback of the larger audience are likely valid whether we like them or not.

I have a friend who's willing to risk the job that puts food on his table and for his family in order to give you guys exclusive information.

So...have I ever told you I have this friend?

C'mon people use something more original!

Edit: Ha beaten.

I'm still hoping for some leaker to have the balls and say that they worked on the games themselves.
Bonus points if they claim to be Sakurai; given his history of trolling his fans it might actually be believable
.

Those sons of bitches are working together, huh.

Either way that's a fucking crazy amount of new and old characters, no way any of it's true if they're reaching the bottom of the barrel for character trailers...

I love how half these "leaks" are just trying to pander to the Melee crowd: toggle-able wavedashing and l-canceling, "my friend the beta tester is a hardcore Melee player and he loved it," etc. All credibility goes out the window when they start talking like that.

Well, if we're posting leaks of varying credibility, here's one I just saw right now.

"He uses his various paper items such as the paper hammer."

That line kills me.

so wait....when you say Shun...you mean, our Shun? Shunxsato?

No, Shun_One. He's a dude who is into modding Brawl (mostly character colors).

I don't see any reason why Shun_One would lie. But then again I don't really pay attention (and by pay attention I mean I don't buy into it or think about it at all) to anything like this a month in advance from release anyway. That said, there's some details that people are missing:

1. Shun_One's 'source' quit his job a week before E3, therefore anything changed/added after his departure he wouldn't know about (therefore if ICs were a recent addition he apparently wouldn't know)
2. The team colors bit was told to Shun_One before the E3 demos came out

I don't believe it either way but the first point is kind of crucial info on its credibility. Instead of laughing it off and calling it fake because of ICs potentially being confirmed to be in the game by the polar bears being in Smash Run, you should consider the above. THAT said, though, it doesn't mean you should believe it whatsoever. However, the whole quitting job voluntarily thing sort of outs the source to Nintendo if it's real sooooo....

Roster discussion is serious business, doe.

Why would they cut the Ice Climbers when Rosalina and Luma are just as complex? OMG THE 3DS IS TOO WEAK! I want Sakurai to just reveal the whole damn roster already so these leaks stop.

I don't think they're really as complex. You can't really compare the Luma to an actual fully modeled character. With Ice Climbers, you can't really have them with two different models.

Just reduce their polycount and texture quality.

There won't be trailers for all newcomers. See: Melee and Brawl

I know, right? Don't forget them demonizing Sakurai during Brawl's development.

"I REFUSE TO WORK ON THE SSE SAKURAI ITS A BAD IDEA"

They aren't comparable at all. If you watch Luma during gameplay videos, Luma only attacks when you attack. It doesn't have its own AI, it sort of just gravitates (or tries to) back to Rosalina. Luma is more comparable to Olimar's Pikmin, which also don't have any independent AI either.

Nana has her own AI, like a CPU. She follows her own set of script and everything separate from Popo. You can desync from her, she can do things on her own (of course, the things she does on her own vary from dumb luck to stupidity to being smart). Ice Climbers are an extremely complicated character, even if you think they're not at all. And it's not even just because it's two character models, it's also the AI she needs and if the 3DS can't do that then I imagine Sakurai wouldn't think twice about cutting them -- it's a legitimate reason.

THAT said, those "development troubles" were made public a year ago or so. It's possible they made breakthroughs and were able to get them in the game. We won't know until release probably. But just because you really like them doesn't mean Sakurai is a terrible person for cutting them out of the game completely when the dev team were restricted by what the 3DS was capable of and they wanted to keep character roster parity between the two versions.

So Hyrule Warriors is having a stream this Thursday and may show some more characters. It's a long shot, but they show Gannondorf, I wonder if he would be the veteran reveal on Friday. Just a wild guess on my part.

Pretty sure Sakurai has no knowledge of what Tecmo Koei is planning to show

They could change their design. Desynched control at all times.

Would quitting his job really allow that guy to just go around and leak stuff? Or is this something like "He didn't sign a contract so he can do whatever he wants?"

"...if true" implies that this could be real. Please stop. I love how all of these fake leaks are now listing Chorus Men/Marshall even though nobody even acknowledged Rhythm Heaven until the Gematsu guy said so. For all we know, the enemies in Smash Run don't mean a damn thing. There's an enemy Pooka and yet to the best of my knowledge, Dig Dug isn't going to be a playable character. But this could also apply to my beloved K. Rool. sadface.jpg

Don't worry, Gonzo! =] The "...If true" is merely there as a recognition that I do not work on this game nor have any more information regarding it than what has been posted on this forum and is official or has been released by Nintendo. Of course, I don't wish for Wolf or Ice Climbers to be cut. Do I believe this rumor to be true? Nope. Can it? I guess, since I don't have the game with me to confirm that concretely. How likely is it, though? The Baby Bowser, Dark Pit, and alt blowout, I don't find too likely. The Wolf and IC cuts? A little more likely.

My post was a joke, more than anything, based on the existent chance that their exclusion is still possible from our point of view. But in regards to IC, the probability is roughly on the level that I'll be struck by lightning the next time I go for a walk in the rain while walking in a wooded area or busy city centre.

No

Unless you think Dark Pit, Bowser Jr., and Duck Hunt Dog are in

I could buy Dark Pit clone, I could buy Bowser Jr either as a newcomer or a clone, but not DHD not in a million years. Also not BJ in the koopa clown car

The latter...Except with many more wannabes.

Figured as much, almost all real leaks give minimal details for a reason, when will fake leakers figure this out?

Of course not.

Makai is Samurai's alt confirmed

:P

There is nothing you could do short of show me the selection screen first hand that would convince me these characters are playable.

Dark Pit might be a Pit alt.

I don't buy a letter of these other claims.

I mean, DHD has been a fan-speculated character for two games, but it strikes me as people deliberately looking for an obscure WTF character. I think Sakurai has proven to be less predictable than that.
