They definitely feel like teenagers. I don't know any of them as people and they're most definitely NOT teenagers (right?). But they sure do seem like it. Then and now.

Most of the mods you see in the Smash 4 sections are most likely young (teenager probably). However, there are way older people on the staff that have been there since 2001 (when the site was initially created). Newer mods are bound to be younger if their join date was like 2012-2014. As far as I know, they were probably made a mod because their existing older mods don't want to deal (or don't deal because they're assigned to a different subforum on the site) with the Smash 4 subforums. Like, for example, you never see Mic (one of the oldest members on the staff) in the Smash 4 subforums moderating it -- I think he did at first a few times but I haven't seen him since. Then again, he's more of an admin now anyway.

I'm not sure what the qualifications are now to be a mod on there but I remember way back when it wasn't as easy to be a mod. I think things have changed because of how big the site is now compared to back when I was more active on there. With a new game on the horizon, I think AlphaZealot (the site owner) wanted more mods to keep the Smash 4 section in check from going too crazy.

Now that I think of it, when Nsider closed the community tried to make their own Nsider clone like NeoGAF did and succeeded in doing. I even registered for it. It was really sad and pathetic, but the sudden closing of that community have a lot of people nowhere to go.

I remember people trying to do that. I think the sudden shutdown of that forum is what caused me to start going on Serebii Forums. I also remember Nsider having some dumb-ass rule about not sharing your Friend Code. Nintendo used to be weird, man.

i had sorta moved past nsider by the time dojo started, and the forum i was on at the time was SUPER chill
like, i recently went back and reread its dojo thread, and MAN my reactions were boring! no crazy leaks or speculation or anything, just sorta saying "wow that's neat" to every update. i don't think ridley was even mentioned once.

so yeah, for that reason all this kinda fascinates me.

Worth noting that, had Sonic not been in and all the cut characters been in, there likely would have been an even 40 roster slots (46 characters).

Well, a few reasons:
1) Sakurai didn't want any more than "2 or 3" third parties in Brawl. Snake being one left many people to assume Sonic and/or Megaman would be the other one or two.
2) Nintendo nor Capcom never flat-out said Megaman wasn't in Brawl.
3) People would fake leak that everyone's favorite blue character would be in, so people always took it as either Sonic or Megaman.

But I'm suddenly old and stuff, so I have to work year-round. Losing the extra couple of hours also hits me harder now than it probably would have a few years back.

This was it in a nutshell:

1. Lots of uninformed support for Geno from Super Mario RPG. He was definitely the #1 character you saw everywhere that had no chance of getting in. He was regularly the subject of fake leaks or interviews.

2. Mega Man didn't seem discussed as much as he was just expected. People really clung to that fan poll and lots of people felt like Mega Man was a natural inclusion. Sakurai said "2-3" third party characters and people assumed three and filled in the obvious.

3. The ROB leak, which was the complete roster, was fake because Toon Link and ROB already being a generic Subspace enemy. People also said ROB must be ROB 64 from Star Fox because of his placement on the list, which was after the Star Fox characters.

4. People obsessed with finding shapes of characters in the clouds around the Halberd in the first SSE trailer. I know lots of people still have that GIF that "proves" there are characters in the clouds.

5. Ridley support was nowhere as big (ha) as it is now. He was a very popular choice, but nothing to the intensity we see now.

Ultimately, Brawl held promise to contain every side, retro, or obscure character you could think of and people's lists and leaks were full or characters you knew weren't coming. Funnily enough, several of them became ATs.

It was such a different world. Once fans latched on to a particular character they were BELIEVED to be in the game with all their might. Their fan demand was what Smash was all about, so every choice they came up with was guaranteed to them. It's amazing to look back and everybody who was supposedly 100% going to make it and then didn't.

Also "only 35 characters" was a huge complaint. I don't know why. That's ten over Melee and more with transformations. What was wrong with people?

I remember the Nsider forums very well. It was actually my first community. I never posted on a forum before that.

And it was insane. Very very crowded, at least on the Smash forum, and opinions were WILD.

Edit: I remember so many character megathreads and one really central member of the community who loved Lyndis. Every Fire Emblem thread inevitably fell apart because of that person and their followers. Now that I think of it, I'm surprised there was so much FE fandom there. I remember threads for Lyn, Hector, and Sigurd being really popular.

I remember the forums shutting down like a few weeks before Sonic was announced for Brawl.

I'm pretty sure Sonic would have brought that site down for a few days. I kind of wish it was around for that reveal.

Also, it was my first community as well. I was the last Sage they ever awarded, so that's kind of cool
