Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

So in order to use the 3DS as a controller you need Smash Bros. for 3DS? They could have released a standalone app on the eShop for that, right? :/

Argh. I hit a GameStop midnight launch and another GameStop + two Targets this morning at opening hoping to find a GameCube adapter with no luck. These things are seriously hard to find.

For those of you who have gotten one, where did you get it? Going to keep trying throughout the day, but I know my chances will only decrease...
I ordered it via in store pickup on Best Buy's site this morning, picked it up over lunch. The GS midnight I was at said they had no GC adapters, but thought they would today or something. Weird. I don't know why Nintendo would send the game without adapters. What sort of barbarian would try to play like that. :P (Nah, pro controller/Gamepad isn't bad, but for once I really badly wish the c-stick was below the buttons.)

Every store and site I visit is out of the bundle though.

just to add to the "online" reports:

Even using Wifi and a crappy 6 mb connection, I've played over 30 online matches with virtually no lag.

Tested 5 matches online; it's buttery smooth!
Wifi in case anyone was wondering.

I can't wait till online tournaments get implemented.

You may wish to dig a bit in your settings to give some guidance to the other posters in this thread. Some are having a lot of trouble with Wifi, while others are having super awesome experiences like you.

Anyone have a good button layout for Remote + Nunchuck? Its weird having the Shield button to your left hand, instead of on the right where I'm used to on 3DS.

But does it produce the Mario Party phenom of suddenly becoming a great time when you introduce friends?
I doubt it. Mario Party is fun because the mini games are fun too. It's just way better with more people. Here you might get stuck with random characters you would never play as and then they don't even feel right because of the stat boosts or deductions.

Imagine playing Street Fighter and not really being good with Ken. Then being forced to use Ken and having his stats all mixed up. That was essentially my two games of Smash Tour so far.

For someone who is on the fence about getting this, and knows only a little about it, can you explain to me where the subtleties / variety of attacks comes from - am I right in thinking that there is only one main attack button for instance? If so, how does it not descend into mashing territory? Sorry, I'm keen to get this for the soundtrack alone but need some convincing on the mechanics.

I'll have to test this out over the weekend.

To also add to the online reports, I couldn't even get into matches with wifi.
It worked when I went wired, but it would just give me errors with wifi.

Everything else on the U works with wifi - Browser, Netflix, Miiverse, etc so it's a weird situation.

Man Smash Tour really sucks. I don't know why they thought making you play with random characters and then messing with the physics depending on what you pick up is fun. Add in that you have to play 15 rounds of it for one game and it just becomes tedious and unfun.

I guess it's fun if everyone's a player, not a cheating AI

Yeah Smash Tour is garbage. Grinding through it to get the Pac Man stage, but fuck... I'd never willingly play this mode.

Between Smash Run and this, Sakurai's had some pretty bad ideas for new game modes.

Is this worth getting for someone who likes traditional fighting games, likes Nintendo characters and has never played any of the previous installments?

I am going to say yes, however there are some people around who dont like it and like traditional fighters and the mario games etc. so it isnt for sure. But hey, if you are going to like it, you will REALLY like it.

Maybe for other people, but that's not really the issue for me. The issue is being forced to use fighters I wouldn't use and then the fighter not even having consistent stats.

I mean, I hope every one else likes it, but after I try out every map I don't know if I'll ever bother with it again.

There are two main attack buttons. A is for physical melee and B is for specials. The difference with Smash Bros. is that buttons are context sensitive: depending on whether you're pressing up, down, left, right, or neutral, you produce an entirely different move.

Since the game is heavily dependent on how you manage your space, it doesn't reward button mashing in the least. You need to be playing deliberately to finish your opponent; there's no health bar to whittle down.

Pretty much similar to 3DS online. Really depends on the weakest link's connection.

Anecdotal: I had a terrible experience with the 3DS, to the point that I quit the game. The Wii U version, however, made me fall in love all over again. I'm using the ethernet adapter, btw.

You tell me

This info is great but is not going to show whether or not your Wifi Connection to the Wii U is properly configured.

If you have any B/G devices on your network, they will affect the whole shebang. I usually set my routers to N mode only just to make sure no stray older clients connect.

Also pretty sure you need to be using AES to get the best speeds on 802.11n.

GameStop.com has stock right now if you don't mind waiting for it to ship.

Thanks! Amazingly, I just checked Best Buy's website and I was able to order one for in-store pickup today at my local store. I'm dubious that it will actually work out so easily and conveniently since they seem to be in such short supply, but hey, maybe I'll get lucky!

Smash Run isn't a bad idea, it just needs some tweaking:
1) Online enabled.
2) All players on the same field during the build-up.
3) The final event is selectable by the group playing by majority rule, and lasts...longer.
4) The multiman Smash final events have all players on the screen at once.

Now you tell me that wouldn't be a blast to play for most people.

I would actually be excited for this altered version to be in the Wii U version.

Agreed. It's a good idea not implemented very well.

Locked in my final Amiibo orders. Getting Yoshi, Pikachu and Fox. Because they look the best to me from what I've seen and I really want them all. Also sort of want Samus and Villager but will get those instore if I see them and they look good, otherwise I won't bother. No biggie.

... 1 week to go. So jealous.

Basically what the above poster said, the reason this control scheme is used is for accessibility. A beginner can pick up any character and have -some- idea how to go about playing it without having to look up and learn different combos.

The 'A' button does the following:

Standard attack combo, forward tilt attack, up tilt attack, down tilt attack, forward smash attack (smashing the stick instead of tilting it while pressing A), downward smash, up smash...and if you jump, you can neutral attack, forward air attack, upward air, backward air, downward air.

So that one button plus the control stick produces 13 or more unique moves.

Then 'B' button has specials that are different for (most) every fighter. Neutral B, Up B, Side B, and Down B produce 4 signature moves each fighter has and they vary widely.

You can also dodge, shield, air dodge, and roll. These abilities -must not be ignored-. You must master defensive and evasive moves if you want to even stand a chance against a half-competent Smash player. Button mashers get eaten alive by spacing, counters, projectiles and clever approaches by even entry level Smash players.

So against the common belief of some hardcore Fighter players, Smash is anything BUT a button masher. You can't just pick a few quick and easy to pull off combos to whittle down health, you have to build up enough of a percentage in order to knock the others off the stage, and every character has different physics, weight, and power to consider. THEN you factor in things like items, stage hazards, and Final Smashes.

If you take the time to learn and practice, it's a surprisingly deep game. Any of the games actually, with each game having it's own dedicated playerbase, usually between Melee, Project M (Player made mod of Brawl), and now Smash 4 (I've seen no indication that anyone wanted to scoff at Smash 4 to stay with Brawl, most of the Brawl players moved onto Smash 4 rightly).

It's a good fighter with boat loads of content compared to any other fighter or party game on the market. It's the best of both worlds while also duking it out as your favorite Nintendo characters in impossible matchups. This is why Smash Bros is one of the single most recognized games EVER. Gamez gud.

I give it a danger stamp of approval.

Tasty post, good work. I'd add that for fighting game enthusiasts, there are tons of hidden mechanics in Smash that even add further to the depth of the game. Shaving off a couple frames can mean life or death in Smash.

Good, hope it works out for you! I was thinking the exact same thing when I ordered mine, but just walked right in and picked it up no problem.

I tried on October 3rd and they were out. Don't know why I didn't start scrambling then. :(

Stop going to gamestop, gamestop only get things for preorders on launch day go to best buy

Haven't been following the Wii U version too closely to not spoil the surprise and what a surprise it is! Had no idea there was going to be so many unique stages compared to the 3DS version, feels like I'm going through it for the first time.

And my best buy had 6 gamecube adaptors, might be a good place to look. Obviously your store will vary though.

Went to Gamestop and grabbed my copy during my lunch break since I was in the area during lunch anyways. Now I have to wait 4 more hours at work with this box staring at me.

omg if you do a quick single dashdance back and forth with Falcon he can do a mini moonwalk

this game is SO GOOD with a proper controller

From my first For Glory match.

Was pretty stoked. #trueunderdogstory

For Glory was pretty good. Not much lag, maybe a few frames here and there. For Fun was another story entirely, as was With Friends (or whatever its called). When I played directly against my friend alone, there was hilariously bad lag and frame rate dropped to the single digits for a few seconds here and there.
