Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

The Luigi character page links to "Mario and Luigi: Dream Team"

which means both of the post-E3 character reveals have been linked to game releases.

For the remainder of 2013, we'll be seeing:

Wonderful 101
Sonic Lost World
Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
Wii Party U
Wii Fit U
Pokemon X & Y
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I'm wondering how many of these will trigger more character reveals.

So Wonder Red, maybe Sonic, Toon Link, Donkey Kong, and then Peach for 3D World. Pokemon is big enough that I don't know if it needs SSB's help in promotion, but if anything I'd expect Jigglypuff, Lucario, or Mewtwo.

Nah, SSB does not only promote so I'm prety sure Lucario, Mewtwo, Blaziken or jigglypuff will be announced on October.

Pokémon is a long-running series that should embrace every part of it in its long history in its character selection IMO.

Pokemon needs a rep that represents a game and not the series itself. Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Lucario represent the entire series, the anime, cards, etc, the brand of Pokemon, while Pokemon Trainer is 100% game related, with no connection at all to the wider brand of Pokemon besides their voices. Extending him out to represent the entire brand just waters him down as a unique character and just makes him a piece of the larger Pokemon media company, and not as a game character.

He embraces more being based on Red than he would with 3 random Pokemon. He represents the very core of Pokemon, ignoring the outside media. In 64 and Melee we only had Pokemon popular in the anime and that sell lots of merchandise. Nobody buys Ivysaur merchandise. I don't even think they sell Red clothing or toys. He brought something fresh to Pokemon reps completely ignoring the brand and just being a regular old character from a regular game.

Pokemon is in an awkward and unique position in Smash because it's a brand that transcends just video games. It was refreshing to see a character that ignores the outside stuff and is based entirely on a game. He wasn't "just" a Pokemon trainer, he was Red, just not named as such because you can name him whatever you want in the game and that's a large part of the game too.

How would starters from different gens being representing different Pokemon media rather than the games?

Because they'd pick ones that were popular and would sell toys and not someone like Ivysaur who I've never even seen a toy for and was in the cartoon like once. They wouldn't be picked for being Pokemon in a game, they'd be picked for being popular movie Pokemon to sell the brand.

That's a lot of assuming there.

Is it? It's the only reason Jigglypuff exists in Smash Bros at all. We already know Sakurai has a hard time getting permission from the Pokemon Company for their use in Smash Bros, if they were given a choice, why would they pick Ivysaur when they can add the starter from X/Y and maybe sell a few more copies and some plushies?

Right now, the possibilities I'm seeing are:

Wonderful 101 - None
Sonic Lost World - Sonic
Wind Waker HD _Toon Link, Zelda, or Ganondorf
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Diddy Kong
Super Mario 3D World - Peach or Newcomer Toad
Wii Party U - Newcomer Mii
Wii Fit U - None. Maybe a breakdown of Wii Fit Trainer's moves?
Pokemon X & Y - Any of the returning Pokemon, more likely Trainer or MegaMewtwo
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Zelda, Ganondorf or Newcomer classic Ganon

They're easier to understand than Nintendo most of the time, though.

I am still trying to understand that logic with the cutscenes.

I'm not sure what your argument is, if they replaced the starters in Pokemon Trainer with different starters... well most of the starters are pretty even in popularity. Plus Ivysaur got in Brawl so why is it so strange to think that other less common Pokemon could get into the new games?

Pokémon Trainer was given three first generation Pokémon in Brawl instead of opting for one Pokémon each from the first three gens, so I don't know why anyone would suddenly expect the character to change so drastically for the new game. Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur are three original characters that Sakurai had to design move sets for; they're not as expendable or swappable as some of you imagine.

seems about right. I wonder if next year will be more interesting.

Was that intentional though? Still stupid to not give it an original title.

Considering we're over ten years removed from the original, if you're mistaking it with the N64 version someone's not doing their job right. It probably is intentional, since all the marketing material includes it in the subtitles:

Because Ivysaur only got in because Pokemon trainer is Red and directly represents the first generation of Pokemon. If he represented the entire series Ivysaur would have had no chance at all to get in, probably not even in a Pokeball summon. The grass second evolution almost certainly would have been Grovyle based on media presence in the Pokemon brand. It was only because PT represented a specific game that he was able to be a playable character.

I'm still pretty set on the fact that we might actually see Ganon (Classic Blue Boar with Trident) this time around. ALBW stands to be his grand return, and ALBW will stand to be the most recent "new" Zelda release by the time Smash4 arrives.

We need a Smash Bros. Year of the Luigi Edition featuring

Smooth Criminal Luigi should be the final smash.

Pretty dissapointed with the way they're bringing Luigi, same fuking assets as brawl animation(you can tell)/attacks, seriously this is just lazy and or rushed >_>

Who's to say he can't do the same for another generation of Pokémon? Personally, I feel it'd get somewhat stale if they stuck with the original trio and that's why I'm hoping they'll go with Gen III starters since they skipped over a rep from that in Brawl.

I prefer them reusing/improving Brawl assets for old characters if it means they'll be able to put more time and resources into actual new characters.

how can you tell the animation is the same when we've only seen screenshots?

Blaziken doesn't need to replace Charizard, he's a popular and well known enough Pokemon to stand on his own as a regular character, if they do decide to add him (which I hope they do)

But 3 humanoid Pokemon? I guess Blaziken uses more karate type moves, Lucario is a mix of psychic and fighting moves and Mewtwo is all psychic moves, but I don't know...

I'm pretty sure Sakurai said in a recent interview that they remodel all of the characters. The one about "the pain" of developing for the game.

I'd play as John.

What's wrong with Brawl's animation quality? And even then, most of Brawl's animations were brought over from Melee. Sakurai poses action figures into the motions he wants, and then the animation team works off of that. The "established" Smash Bros. Luigi is the vision Sakurai has for the character. Giving old characters new attacks/animations for the sake of it sounds terrible.

I love Charizard as much as the next guy, but being popular/iconic didn't save Mewtwo from being cut from Brawl. And if they apply Blaziken to PT I'm sure they can differentiate him enough from Mewtwo/Lucario.

Yeah, send us those Luigi animation shots, because I'm pretty sure you're the only one that's seen them since his reveal yesterday, and I happen to think it's pretty selfish that you wouldn't share those with the rest of us.

I too think changing the pokemon pokemon trainer uses would be a massive disappointment, balladofwindfishes is right about him representing a specific game in the franchise rather than the brand as a whole, and I'd rather them be representing the game that started it all than some other random gen.

I'd be totally fine with them adding another different pokemon trainer though, or even a trainer from one of the enemy teams from any of the games, just keep red in the game.

But then I think there'd be too many pokemon reps, because I'd also like Mewtwo back and didn't mind Lucario being in considering he had a unique moveset.

You can definitely tell by these screenshots.

Nothing wrong, I just wish they changed stuff up a bit, say change some of their idle/attack animations, I guess I'm salty because he keeps ignoring the Poltergust, oh well.

I'm surprised the image isn't in OP to begin with, since this was made after the announcement.
