Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

I'm pretty sure that it will sell very well in Japanese and European. I have a weird feeling that American are more likely to be Console-centric for SSB4.

Is anyone hyping for potential Pokemon character reveal tonight/tomorrow morning? Not me, I would like to BELIEVE!

I dunno man, I mean, install base wise, it'll be eaten alive by the 3DS game rather than Wii U. I mean, not many people are buying a Wii U due to lack of support and the 3DS is pretty much killing it this year, so I imagine that'll sell more.

Not to say the Wii U game won't sell, it will.

That's assuming:

1) The Wii U's situation won't improve in over a year.
2) The potential market for both is the same.
3) Both versions will release a the same time.

Smash Bros. is one of those games that actually sells systems.

I can't imagine Smash selling enough Wii U's in order to beat the 3DS in sales.

I imagine those with 3DS' will just settle for that, considering Smash also looks to be no-compromises on 3DS too. (so far anyways)

I can't imagine Wii U making a major change next year, but I imagine Mario 3D World and Mario Kart may change that.

I think the 3DS version of Smash Bros. will do quite well, but there's still a few unknowns. The series has always focused on local multiplayer on one screen, who knows how a more "personal" Smash Bros. will find itself.

In Japan I expect the 3ds version to out sell the wiiu version. I expect world wide though most people will opt for the wiiu version in a Christmas bundle at $250 if Nintendo is smart

Well, I imagine huddling around together 4 player wise on 3DS' would be pretty fun.

Also, both have online, so I wouldn't call it more "personal", though it is in the sense that you can't share screens.

It all depends on how much they neuter Download Play as an incentive for people to buy their own copies, as they have with certain games in the past (Mario Kart, could only play as 1 character, could only access 1/2 the levels).

Luigi's Mansion 2 is such a fun Download Play game, partially because everybody can play it completely regardless of whether they have a game or not.

On the contrary, I think the 3DS version might cannibalize sales of the Smash U version cause the 3DS is doing so well. Of course hardcore Smashers like us are gonna go for the home console version but the casual market outweighs us by a lot. So i'm thinking that other casuals are just gonna pick it up on the 3DS, since they will have the luxury of possible day one digital and the fact that its portable with some sort of local multiplayer. Not only that but character wise it will seem to be the same game as the console version so i'm sure that will be even more of an incentive to get it on the console with the perceived "better sales" since there's way more 3DS owners out there, and probably going to be even more once Pokemon and this game comes out.

I dunno. Some people involved with the project seem to think it's more personal.

Sakurai believes a portable Smash experience allows for new ideas, but it also becomes more personal than the console experience

So if tomorrow happens and no new pokemon news what will be everyone's thoughts?

Hmm. Most likely speculate about why we didn't get our character, Sakurai being unpredictable, talk about how all the other pokemon were secret characters. Pokemon Trainer causing problems for 3DS.

How Drago would have gotten picked for an avatar.

Project M doesn't mean anything to me so...*shrug*. His eyes are a little weird, too.

I'm more interested in knowing if he'll come back for Smash U/3DS.

I honestly see it more likely that Smash fans will buy the console version as a definite, with the portable version being an option for more on-the-go play. So nothing cannibalizing anything, but more that 3DS sales will be due to complimentary purchases. I doubt we'll find many people buying ONLY the 3DS version.

There's also the fact that, as a console franchise, people will have expectations for the look and feel of the series. So while the gameplay may be on equal footing, presentation will play a key role in how sales are broken down between the 2 versions, with a lot of prior owners having a preference for a Smash game in 1080p and a Pro Controller (or the inevitable Gamecube controller option that will reveal itself).

you assume there is an install base for Wii U
*drops mic*
Smash Bros. CREATES install bases. People seem to forget how the Gamecube was literally dubbed "the Smash Bros. console" both inside and outside of GAF.
Your mic drop is invalid.

SSB4 isn't gonna "save" the Wii U any more than Melee helped the Gamecube
in fact, the existence of the 3DS version is gonna take out most of its system-selling ability

Ummm.... pretty much every Gamecube was purchased specifically because of the existence of Smash Bros. and maybe ONE other game people wanted to play. If you'd like, I can try and pull something out of GAF circa 2002-2006 to prove it, but I think basically anyone here who's ever owned a Gamecube will fess up to that being a primary component of their purchase decision.

And yeah, 3DS will net some sales, but not in a cannibalizing way, unless 3DS has the superior A/V experience that even the more casual Smash fans will crave.

He look so awesome, and I called it in other thread. HAHA!

That's only if Super Smash Bros 3DS don't get 2-5 months delay on purpose so they can sell Wii U. I know many people wouldn't have that kind of patience with the game like Super Smash Bros.

oh? do tell where you think the Wii U LTD will end up at

I don't know where it will end up. And neither do you, despite your insinuations to the contrary.
But saying that a game like Smash won't positively impact LTD sales of the system and get people buying it for that game when it's done it for another system (arguably 2 of them) is preposterous, even with a handheld version, as people will not take the visual tradeoffs or the sacrifices in control options that entails.
Never mind that it will be riding of the back of a sales bump from the next Mario Kart and whatever might happen this holiday (3D World looks great but I have reservations about saying the lineup this holiday will motivate sales).

I never said it won't move sales at all
it'll go back to doing nothing within 3 months, Vita-style though

You literally stated/implied that there needs to be a pre-existing install base for the game to sell in any meaningful way.

Do not guarantee this, smash is a console franchise for 3 games now, 3DS having a higher install base currently does not mean it will have higher sales automatically

you assume there is an install base for Wii U

So I'd suggest leaving it at that. Since the only other explanation is that you brought this up irrelevant of the post you responded to without context, just to thread-shit.

Inevitable, you say? Do tell, cause I got a Wavebird and looking to get a corded Gamecube controller again, and if this may happen then im all for it. And also....sources?

It sort of already exists, similar to how a Classic Controller works, all we need is confirmation of how it will work for Smash. It's not unlikely that someone will go the extra mile and make a 3rd-party controller in the exact same shape and style like they do already but without a GCN wire port.
