Hmm ... now it seems like the pattern, if there ever was one, seems to focus on Wii U titles. The four that had games to promote all had Wii U releases

Olimar - Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
Luigi - New Super Luigi U (Wii U) and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (3DS)
Peach - no game to promote.
Toon Link - Wind Waker HD (Wii U)
Sonic - Sonic Lost World (Wii U and 3DS)
Not expecting anything to promote Mario 3D World, since the core Mario series had revealed all of its veterans. If we're only getting character reveals in connection to Wii U titles, then we shouldn't expect anything in regards to A Link Between Worlds.
Or Sakurai just didn't have any other Pokemon in a showable state.
Or Pokemon Company is exercising some weird control.
Or there is no plan, and the pattern has been pure coincidence.
Or we're being trolled.

Fun fact: anthropomorphic mons are an archetype in Japanese mon design.
For things like Godzilla, yes. Of course, putting it against the original Pokemon, it still looks a bit out of place.

It's like a slender, Grass-type Blastoise. Doesn't stand out at all.
Of course, there were absolutely no vaguely humanoid monsters amongst the original Pokemon designs. Wait, no, the exact opposite of that. There were so many they were given their own egg group when breeding was introduced in the second generation.

Screenshot is pretty fantastic. I'm glad they're adding various different stuff from modern 2D Marios. I'm curious as to how long the stage will be before it loops.

I guess Sakurai is trying to make a space between characters, and Sakurai can't help it with Sonic because of Nintendo Direct.
It's possible that they haven't developed the models for remaining characters or the communication between Namco-Bandai/Sora LTD and Pokemon Company went sour.

The one on the left. Nidoking or something? He looks like he's a hard skinned reptile/rodent thing. His arms sort of don't make sense, but he's still a somewhat cohesive design.
The one on the right, is it Graveler or?.. Anyway, he looks like he's a reptile/dinosaur type of thing in a stone. No problem.
Meanwhile, that new pokemon thing, how do you make sense of it? These are themes all the new pokemon often have.. That red line design on the cape/carapace/jacket thing.. Those spikes that aren't organic at all but look more like ornaments. The hands make even less biological sense than Nidoking.
It's a bit of a mess. Not the worst new pokemon design, but still weird.

The design is based on Chestnut, Knight and Hedgehog/Chipmunk. The shell could be symbolized as cape or shield and tan part are supposedly referring to chain mail or chain scales.

Stuff like Mr. Mime, Machoke, etc. are humanoid. Hence a humanoid Pokemon isn't out of place, nor is out of place in the whole "mons" genre since they exist in all mons series in Japan, from SMT to Digimon.

I was thinking the same thing. Weird that Pokémon didn't get an announcement.I don't think the pattern is coincidence.
Just like Nintendo Land, Super Smash Bros. has the benefit of having characters from various series and puts them into the spotlight. This could potentially stir interest in their respective game series. It's actually Super Smash Bros. Melee that interested me in The Legend of Zelda. It's an incredible smart move of Nintendo to promote games that star (new) Super Smash Bros. characters on their release dates.
It's still weird why nothing happened on the release date of Pokémon X and Y. I never understood how much control Nintendo has over the Pokémon property anyway. There are no references to Pokémon in games like WarioWare, Nintendo Land and Animal Crossing. Not even Pokémon outfits in Mii Plaza. Why? Pokémon is a huge property. It's weird that Mario gets at least a reference in a plethora of non-Mario games, while Pokémon only gets a spot in Super Smash Bros. and HarmoKnight, which is developed by the same developer as Pokémon.
I really don't know. Would love to hear an explanation of this.
