Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

A part of me is telling me "don't expect DLC".

Why would you think that? Nintendo created a ton of DLC for Fire Emblem Awakening. They also made an entire second game as NSMB Wii U DLC. Nintendo seems to be exploring DLC quite a bit with their recent games.

There's that French interview from a few months back where Sakurai seemed open to the idea of balance patches at least, unless I'm remembering things wrong.

I know it's called downloadable content but I've always categorized patches as being game necessities to fix things while "DLC" are "extras".

Yeah yeah it's still DLC lol.

I just don't see Sakurai locking characters and stages behind paywalls.

Nintendo may be looking to monetize it but Sakurai seems like the developer to have everything unlockable through challenges rather than buyable.

Fire Emblem was more closer to "new stages" as dlc for smash.

Super Luigi was closer to SF4 > SSF4AE in a smash dlc way of life.

So don't expect just 1 or 2 characters for smash as dlc

Yeah, I wouldn't count Smash DLC out just yet.

Nintendo is clearly working with Namco because of their DLC expertise. DLC confirmed.

But seriously, I'd love DLC even if it was paid. More Smash is a good thing. Though I don't expect them to do paid if it splits the userbase. Maybe if it was a big expansion and also sold at retail like Luigi U.

I could see them doing, like... event match packages. Or break the targets. 10 new event matches for $2.99.

I don't think they have the balls to do new character DLC. Probably not even stages, either. Even then, there is SO much potential for DLC in Smash. Probably more than any other game ever made. You have:

-alternate costumes
-music packs
-additional single player modes
-new taunts
-new announcers
-event matches
-break the targets
-board the platforms (BRING IT BACK)

and the list goes on. I really hope Nintendo does support Smash 4 with legit DLC in the future. Say... a stage/music from the new Wii U Zelda game. I know I'd buy that in a heart beat, and it would be a shame if we have to wait another 6 years to see that game incorporated into a Smash Bros game.

Street Fighter IV was handled perfectly.

I don't expect a new, updated version of Smash every year... but at least one "Super" version maybe 2 or 3 years after the original game's release would be fantastic. A bunch of new stages and characters, rebalance the cast, add some other goodies here and there. That's all you need. These 6 year gaps between games are too painful.

But the long gaps is what makes a new smash bros so exciting :(

I will only be up for Character DLC if it is free, other wise it just hurts the community.

I have very very mixed feelings about DLC on Smash Bros.

For all of the things Nintendo is behind the times with, I don't think this is one of them. Smash Bros doesn't need DLC just because other fighting games does.

wat.

How can generating more revenue and extending a game's life ever be seen as a negative with the Smash Bros. franchise? That's crazy talk, not to mention Sakurai has already mentioned supporting the game after it launches and we've been seeing Nintendo release more DLC for their games (Mario, Pikmin, etc.).

I don't even.

I think DLC for Smash Bros. might be complicated, and that's mostly because of how many people and legal issues are involved in this game.
It's basically 3 parties working on this (Sakurai's own whatever it's called right now, Namco and Nintendo), let alone all the people that are involved in regards to the license for a character/franchise, like GameFreak etc.

In terms of technology and willingness, I don't think anything is standing in Nintendo's way, but I don't think that we'll see anything beyond DLC that might already be planned before the game launches in terms of substantial updates, and if we do get something, then I think it would more likely involve things that don't require involvement of the many parties within this game's development, like additional color palettes or music.

Yeah, Nintendo has a habit of using filler names until the release date gets closer.

Ultimate Super Smash Bros. 4: Arcade Edition :P

Man, never considered DLC for smash. I liked the idea of smaller things like alternate costumes being saved for DLC. Now I'm thinking of all the possibilities with other things, I do agree Nintendo seems to be pretty adventurous lately with DLC like Pikmin being the best example. Not sure they would dedicate the manpower/legal issues into new characters but other little things would be nice

DLC seems exceedingly unlikely since the team making this game is a combination of people from a bunch of different teams who will all go back to their own studios and projects after this game is done.

I don't think DLC itself is actually a bad thing, I just don't think it's something that's exactly required.

I won't really get upset if they do add DLC, just as long as it's handled right. I just don't understand why it's needed so badly and how this is behind the times to not include them. I'd rather have a complete package, really.

EDIT: RE: Extending the game's life... Er, Smash Bros doesn't need DLC to survive. Did we forget that plenty of people still play the games to this day? Not to mention the competitive scene would likely sustain it (assuming Smash 4 is more competitive friendly this time).

This is also a good point as well. They are likely more willing to move on to their projects than sticking with Smash Bros post-launch, aside from maybe some patches.

Man, I was starting to struggle with my smash hype the past couple weeks, but I've been watching the super smash bros melee documentary "The Smash Bros" that kotaku posted (on YouTube, easy to find)..,...

ALL ABOARD THE HYPER TRAIN AGAIN!

Seriously, it was a great documentary if you have the time (there are like 8 or nine half hour segments) and I cannot wait for next smash. Although I never learned any of those advanced techniques I really appreciate the depth in melee and hope that new smash really strikes the balance between melee and brawl like Sakurai has said it would

How long has it been since the last character reveal?

I'm still waiting on a character reveal of someone not in a previous smash game.
Or Snake just so I can know for sure if he is in or not (They need to at least keep his moveset and give it to a Advanced Wars character or something)

IntelliHeath, is the roster contest still ongoing? I have been taking a leave from Smash discussion, but I just want to stop by to know before I return to my hiatus.

Also, more awesome Mega Man pictures FTW.

I think this is the first time we've seen Mega Man on the 3DS version since the game was announced, no? He looks great.

Love that pic.

There is a potential for this being Nintendos Dota or TF2 - But they propably won't use it.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but I don't see Sakurai sitting on SSB for the next year/few years and I don't see Bandai/Namco developing the game without him either.

Does anyone think the trajectory for the reveals hints that this game is quite far away? Or am I just being too pessimistic?
