The producers revealed further details for the first season, including that Superman will be a big factor in Supergirl's life (though he might be more in the background), and the reveal of new characters. In addition to Lucy Lane, Livewire and Reactron, they're introducing Red Tornado, Non, and General Lane (General Lane is Lucy and Lois' father).

Supergirl debuts this November October 26, and will air Mondays at 8 PM on CBS.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime. Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”), Ali Adler, Sarah Schecter and Andrew Kreisberg are executive producers for Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The pilot was directed by Glen Winter (“Arrow”).

Frequently asked questions:

Does this take place after Man of Steel?

No, the DC TV shows and movies are different universes.

If Kara leaves Krypton when she's a little girl and Kal El is a baby, how is Superman older?

Kara was frozen in space for many years. She arrived on Earth much later than her cousin, and thus didn't age.

Does Supergirl exist in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash?

Maybe. There has been mention of possibly crossing over some time down the line, but for now, Supergirl is standalone.

Edit: Arrow and The Flash Producer Gives Update on Supergirl Crossover Potential

When it came to the question of whether CBS will let Supergirl do crossovers with the DC Comics series on CW -- something Berlanti has previously expressed interest in -- he told Variety that while he'd love to see Supergirl join forces with those DC superheroes, it's not currently in the cards. "The network has said publicly at this point they’re going to keep her to themselves,” he said. “I always approach the shows as a fan first, so I would love to see [a crossover].

Is there any possibility though that things could change? Says Berlanti, "I think in success, all things are possible. But there’s a lot that would have to happen before everybody might say yes to that.”

You don't get to bring friends.
Maybe I'm going crazy but....
how are some of the people getting hit by her not just dead?

Glad they realize the secret identity thing for close friends and family is tired.

So much this...drives me nuts. Though no matter how much "I'm just trying to blend in" they spew, I cannot get over these basically invincible people acting like wimps when they're hiding. Non-invincible, normal people act less frail than Superman/Girl. Looks like that won't last too long in this show though, so I'm hopeful.

I really like the tone and approach they took. It seems completely different from Man of Steel, which is good, although I don't know what that means in context of the shared universe. CG looks pretty rough in some spots, though.

Also helps that Melissa Benoist has charm up to 11.

I swear the music and tone makes it seem like one of those parody videos about network shows.

No lies detected there.

It's partially why I'm surprised that I still kinda like it/am optimistic. Even with Superman being directly tied in/referenced, even with the fact it played out like an SNL parody sketch, even though it had that Spotify Breakfast Mix soundtrack - what worked, worked well enough that I still wanna see it.

I think it's mostly that it captures a sort of Marvel vibe - they're superheroes, but they still have real-life shit that they can't duck. Supergirl getting annoyed mid-plane rescue is charming.

Looks fun. Not completely sold on it yet, but I wasn't sold on The Flash at first either. I hope it's good.

You now belong to FMT.
Since jimmy Olsen looks like me, I will support this show. Can not wait for all of the free drinks and fake celeb shots I will take when this airs

Ally McBeal is in this? I'm out, can't stand her pouty face.

I have reached my super hero saturation point with Arrow, Flash, Agents of Shield and Daredevil. Any room is reserved for the other Netflix Marvel shows.

The first half of the trailer is literally the SNL Black Widow skit.

100% This.

I'll give it a chance because Arrow and Flash are great but that barf inducing "Devil Wears Prada" type of stereotype "girly" writing is not endearing me to this show. By the season finale we'll learn that all she needed was a man in her life to make everything work.
