Is Supergirl vulnerable to kryptonite? It seems that she has a more complicated history than just simply being from the same planet as Superman, and the history sites are a bit confusing. From what I've read, after several catastrophic events within the DC universe, she ended up weaker than Superman, but with fewer powers. Then again, in the Justice League Unlimited version, she was vulnerable, as in that episode when the android returned, and she was chasing Lex Luthor through a tunnel and nearly succumbed to kryptonite in there. Obviously I know I shouldn't take a cartoon as a primary resource.

Along another line, was there more than one Supergirl, or did she just decide to wear a more skimpy costume? (the white t-shirt version)

There have been many different Supergirls since 1985.

In 1985, DC killed her off, and in 86 they rewrote history so that she "never existed."

After that, there have been a few characters with that name, but none of them were Superman's cousin from Krypton, like the original. Until last year, when the new Supergirl was introduced.

I have no idea about the cartoon version.

So the newer one who just wears a t-shirt with the logo rather than the old costume pretty much has no relation to Clark Kent at all, and also would not have corresponding weaknesses and strengths, but perhaps the old one would?

Is Supergirl vulnerable to kryptonite?

The current Supergirl, introduced in Superman/Batman "The Girl from Krypton" with all those Turner covers, should be vulnerable to Kryptonite. They're still kinda leaving it open to the possibility she's a fraud, but for now she's Kryptonian.

the current supergirl is from krypton but witha twist. she's from HYPERTIME krypton. in other words, a krypton from another universe or reality. and maybe she's not completely vulnerable to kryptonite because the ship she was in was encased in kryptonite. so...... geoff johns needs to come in and clean up that girl's history like he cleaned up hawkman.

Why is the history of certain comic book characters so convoluted? Is it just because they're older and have been written and re-written by writers who wanted to reinvent the character?

^^ sometimes yes, most of DC's retcons have to do with the fact that the golden and silver age writers didn't have to necessarily pay attention to what happened in other books from the same publisher, and over the years as the average age of readership started to go up and they began to more thoroughly question the blatant contradictions.

So DC created Crisis, which basically cleaned up all of those issues up to that point, then in '94 did Zero Hour which more or less wiped the Legion of Super-Heroes from the books, as Superboy had never really existed, and created a new LSH continuity.

Last year at school we had a lecture on how STUPID Super Girl's character was/is
Looked at the Super Girl that came to life because Jimmy Olson wished her into being using a phallic looking object

And then the other Super Girl that came from Krytpn

And how female heroes always stay in the shadows, are told to conform and hide their powers, dominated by male heroes etc...

Read that awhile ago and this is what I can remember from it. Matrix is from an Earth where Clark, as Superboy, existed but died (shoplifter would understand that story best as it has to do with the LSH). The Lex of that Earth was tricked into letting loose General Zod and his cronies, who are each as powerful as pre-crisis Superman. And with no Superboy, Zod went on a rampage killing billions of people.. just because he can. Lex created Matrix and gave her powers to fight Zod, the costume and namesake is an homage to that Earth's hero, Superboy. Lex also made Matrix a clone of Lana Lang so that she could come to the regular DC Earth and get Superman to help. Supes would end up killing Zod and his cronies, leading to much moral drama later, but that's also another story. Superman carried Matrix back to regular DC Earth where Matrix continued to be Supergirl and later merged with a human named Linda Danvers. In the end, Matrix would become an Earth born angel but left Linda with some super powers which Linda used as the white T-shirt Supergirl. Linda is still around but just retired from superheroing.

Now if you thought that was confusing, Wondergirl's is worse cuz I still don't get that one.
