Even if it turns out bad, I would still highly recommend checking out the 8-issue series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow that the film is adapting. It's fully self-contained, you don't know need to know anything going into the story, and the final issue wraps up its story completely. Also the art is awesome, really brings to life all the alien worlds Supergirl and Ruthye visit along their journey.
I need to check out the indie comic Helen of Wyndhorn, it reunites the duo of writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely who made this Supergirl book.
