So last night I was watching the original superman from 78, and as good as that movie is, If you the fan could change anything about it what would it be?

For me, I would cut out the voice over that Margo Kidder does when they are flying. I guess you can say its her poem to Superman!! That was the only part of the movie that annoys me.

Also, here is a question for superman fans in general. Was Lex Luthor's lackie's (Otis, and Ms. Tessmarker added for the movie? Or did he have them in the comics and what not?

Just for you:

read2.jpg

Can you read my mind?
Do you know what is is that you do to me?
I don't know who you are
Just a friend from another star

Here I am like a kid out of school
Holding hands with a god
I'm a fool

Will you look at me
Quivering
Like a little girl
Shivering
You can see right through me

Can you read my mind?
Can you picture the things I'm thinking of?
Wondering why you are
All the wonderful things you are

You can fly!
You belong in the sky!
You and I
Could belong to each other

If you need a friend
I'm the one to fly to
If you need to be loved
Here I am

Read my mind

My change would be to find somebody more attractive than Margot Kidder... yeech. Then again she didn't look too bad as a hooker in Some Kind of Hero....

Lex Luthor: Otisburg... Otisburg?
Otis: It's a little bitty place.
Lex Luthor: OTISBURG?!?
Otis: Okay, I'll just wipe it off, that's all. Just a little town.

:lol :lol

Otis for prez!

I'd ditch the religious overtones, tone down Clark, axe the overly chipper disposition of Supes, and shoot better action. I liked the travelling back in time only because it showed that the character wasn't perfect because when it came down to it he could be moved to abuse his power for his own personal gain.

Agreed...that's why the scene never bothered me that much. It just looked cheesey. I thought the movie was fine the way it was though.

What I need to see now is the Donner version of Superman 2, which is supposedly gonna get a DVD release next year.

I hated the time travel, the damn Lois monologue, Pa Kent dying, and Lex Luthor's mannerisms. Gene Hackman's cool, but when I think Lex I think of the cartoon Lex, or even Smallville Lex. They're more evil.

Superman needs religious overtones. Even if I don't like them, you have to admit that if we get to keep his goody outward red underwear, then we have to keep that climate of his savior figure. What do you think the "El" in his name implies? He's not mexican... ;)
And although I hated that scene, it wasn't only for his personal gain, there were other catastrophies that happened. It was basically the golden age Superman. Since this new one is a sequel to that vision, will this Superman not have the limits set to him after the Crisis? Will he eventually become immune to kryptonite?

The new Superman movie takes place "supposedly" 15yrs after Superman 2. I would like to see how they handle the Jor-el voice and if it fits with the movie.

That's bullshit. Superman didn't initially start out as a savior with a Jesus Christ-complex. Superman originally was more or less the embodiment of immigrants coming to America for a new life. Stressing his fish out of water nature, while desperately trying to fit in, as well as protect, is more interesting than another fucking Christ parallel.

Yeah, I'm a Christian and I can't say I've ever seen this "Superman = the Christ!!" thing that's being talked about. The only time Superman could've been likened to that sort of thing was when he "died" after facing Doomsday, only to rise again. With Jesus-length hair.

Robocop is the christ-obsessed movie I think some people in this thread are looking for. Robocop might as well been called 'Jesus-87'.

religious overtones? I've seen that movie a billion times and do not know what you guys are talking about...

I'm not really talking about the movie as much as the current incarnation in the comics. More or less responding to people who want more religious overtones.

Then you clearly have not read any comics. Hell, we've had comic book writers and students galore go on endlessly about the savior complex Superman has going on. And you pretty much hit the nail on the head with the Death and Resurrection of Superman of Latter-Day Saints.

You misread me. I didn't say I want the religious overtone, I'm saying he needs them. If you don't want to see the similarities between the two, fine, but to close your eyes to it is ridiculous. He's everything the hebrews of old wanted Christ to be but wasn't. It suggests it, but doesn't say it outright. Well, aside from his last name being a holy suffix.

Still the best comic book movie ever though.

For me personally, Batman Begins really took that honor. Damn I want the DVD already..... But I can't wait to see if the new Superman can achieve the same greatness....

It's really not that blatant? Do I have to spell it out for you?

"Because of the wisdom and compassion of Jor-el; because he knew the human race had the capacity for goodness, he sent us his only son."

Kal-El 19:78

Kal-El 19:78

Amen.

But thats just commentary from the friggin trailer. In the movie he chose earth because for one his son would look that same, two we were alot like krypton just more primative, three his son would have great powers to aid people due to the effects of our sun on Kal el. So basically a father wanting his son to SURVIVE pretty much ensured his SURVIVAL because his kryptonian dna would be bad ass under the effects of our sun.

If he was DESTINED to send us a saviour why did he include the option for his son to be totally normal and relinquish the responsibility that came with his being on our planet. Whats so religious about that, if I were a father and knew my son would survive something like that, id want him to do something to help others if he could. Thats basically all he told his son, that and he had alot of power so came alot of responsibility. Basically superman can literally do more so he SHOULD help more, he just wanted his son to show some social responsibility since earth was his home. Apparently this translates into him becoming the sacrafice of all man has done wrong....

Kal-El 19:78

"And lo, the son returned after a long journey and was changed. And Magdalene had lain with a man of scrupulous tendencies. Behold, sayeth the son to his people, Behold my bikini briefs of manliness."

Again, misread. I explained why the trailer, not the movie, has the themes. If you want me to explain why Mary and Joseph Kent were chosen in the movie, then you'll have to show at least feigned interest.

Ok.

Here's the deal. There has since Superman came to this sort of 'leadership' role in the DCU been a very well established parallel with christianity. If you don't like it, blame John Byrne. It seems to me that you just have a problem with religion, and not with what's essitially been a central aspect of the character since crisis.

The religious parallels can be most clearly seen in Kingdom come, an future style story during which we kind of get to see all the characters as more potent versions of themselves. If you don't know what a character's about. Read Kingdom Come. That should probably clear it up for you.

As well, it seems you've missed the initial purpose of Superman, Willco. It's not a parable on immigration, so much, as a power fantasy created by two young jewish boys . Just take a look at the earlier versions of clark, he really is this sort of idealized semitic empowering agent.

As for the movie. I don't really care for it too much. For me post crisis Superman is really engaging, as he's more man than super. And in the movie he's really this kind of force of nature, far removed from humanity, when he's Kal. Actually, to be honest I first saw the movie a couple of weeks back, so perhaps without the fog of my youth it's missed it's chance to bewitch me. But when I was watching it I couldn't help but think "Jesus... this is WHY people hate superman. This movie is exactly every reason for it."

The perfect being that knows everything, and fixes your problems for you. It's a little condescending.

As for what I'd change. Less quips from Kal.

Well, it was originally Kal-L. :P And those similarities you mention aren't innate. Sure, maybe if Superman was the only superpowered character in all of comics, but every other character performs miracles and "saves people". Jor-El didn't send Superman here to save mankind. They only added that in the movie. That shit isn't from the comics. Jor-El sent Kalel to earth because he could survive here. Itw as no holy mission. Supes is no Christ figure. He's just a good man with a lot of power. The religious stuff is forced.

Here are Jor-El's reasons for sending Supes to Earth.

Wow, what a fucking prick (Jor-El).

best part of superman 78 is in the added scene when otis says his arm isn't long enough to write the missle codes. Lex says something like "You want me to show you a long arm?"

Otis was in some comics. Don't know if he came before or after the movies. I will assume after.

I would get rid of Margot Kidder's voice over as well. And umm.. that's about it. I don't even mind the voice over but if I was held at gun point to change one thing that would be it. perfect movie in my eyes.
