If they go with "2", it'll sound inferior to Sony's "3" in PS3, even if most gamers will know their both just successors to the previous gen.

People keep saying that, but I'm not feeling it. It's like someone telling you that people assume Terminator 2 is inferior to Rambo 3 because one has a '2' in the title and the other has a '3'. Personally, I think that not calling it Xbox 2 would be a worse mistake, since you run the risk of uninformed people assuming it's just a minor upgrade to the existing Xbox, like the GBA -> GBA-SP, or PS -> PSOne. The easiest way to clearly establish it as the successor to Xbox is with a '2'.
