Surface Pro update "coming soon" adds Adobe PS pen pressure support

I recall some people holding off on buying a Surface Pro until this was added:

Then again, might be worth it to wait for Surface Pro 2 at this point. Still, this only further extends the Surface's usability.

Related: some gaffers confirmed that this "unofficial" fix (it is a legit Wacom driver) works already:

I am not sure, but it seems like if you install this driver, the pen should work in Photoshop.

According to Gabriel from PA.

EDIT:

It appears that the Wacom driver linked by Gabe might be the official fix/update, as Surface twitter just retweeted it.

Drivers work great! I drew a quick sketch of the girl from Disney's Paperman short, in Photoshop CS6 using the Wacom test drivers.

Pressure sensitivity works great as well as palm rejection, had a few instances of the screen panning when I didn't want it to but other than it was very nice. (No stray marks etc)

I going try something more complicated over weekend but this may replace me Cintiq for digital drawings on the go.

So how does this stylus work? It detects pressure and wirelessly sends the info to the tablet or something?

It works like all other Wacom pen displays: Digitizer board underneath the LCD sends out electromagnetic waves to the pen and the battery-less pen uses that energy to send pressure data detected via the tip assembly back to the digitizer board using radio frequency. Position of the pen is also detected by the board via electro magnetic resonance.

Surface is a device that makes Windows 8 awesome. But.. I crave lot more power and battery. Not haswell, but maybe Broadwell. Then we be talking. One more year. Let's see what they can do, when this technology matures!

WHEN THE FUCK CAN I BUY ONE HERE GOD DAMN AUSTRALIA

I've been waiting for this glorious day *throws PC in the trash*

How large is the Surface screen again? Maybe I will get one and hold on to it until later in the year when I can splurge for a large Cintiq.

Fix the damn function buttons this time around so I can buy one. >:(

Pretty sure it's 10.6" but could be wrong. It's definitely not 12".

Bought one of these for my fiancee yesterday due to this news. Works great. :)

Here is a size comparison for those interested, monitor in the back is 23":

Pretty amazing but how much would it run all together for this?

Every surface pro comes with the pen. Photoshop? No idea. And there are loads of free paint and photo apps that work with these drivers. So at a minimum, 899 dolla.

So still enthusiast market right now. This would be a pretty good gamechanger if the price dropped to the $500-600 range in total for all the stuff. Free drawing app and handwritten notes and the like? Would be nice to have.

If you're an artist in the market for a laptop, it's a no brainer. If you want a proper PC and a Proper tablet, it's a no brainer. Everyone else should look at what they need. I don't think of it as an iPad competitor because they're not In The same ballpark in terms of utility. I mean, for work stuff, it just works, simple as that.

This is good news.

I lost the pen that came with it and have 2 replacements set to arrive on Thursday (Thank you best buy reward zone).

m0dus, how long did it take you to paint that picture. It looks amazing!!!

Man, I want one of those puppies so bad. SO BAD. That said, I wonder if MS plans to launch a Haswell version soon. That would be the tits, given the somewhat limited battery life of the current model.

Are there decent drawing education apps for that thing yet? I've got one on order but it's a local vendor who really like to drag their feet.

Crap... I already have a desktop computer and a laptop. I don't want to have yet another computer. Yet the portability (vs. the 13HD which requires a computer to drive it) is attractive.

First world problems and all that.

With its form factor and portability, I doubt that becomes a reality anytime soon without MS taking a massive loss on the device. Its an ultrabook tablet. Do you see those or mac book airs getting down to that price?

That said, hopefully rt gets coupled with wacom tech next time. That would be in your price range :)

I've got the biggest hard on for getting one of these soon. Trying to wait until the Pro 2 releases. I'm hoping for a little better battery life and an option to get 8 gigs of ram.
