GAF certainly loads significantly faster on Firefox than IE but it's very annoying when I click on a long-ass thread that has many images, the entire browser would freeze while waiting/loading the images......anyone else experience this? Or is it just my college's slowass network?

I forgot, it's not only images but other forms of data as well. The browser would freeze my entire system such that I can't access my other programs as well. This has never happened with IE. And it can't be my RAM, I've got 1 gig of DDR SDRAM and I don't run that many programs at the same time.....

The only thing that's ever frozen my whole system while it works is a java applet, but I've never had that happen with Firefox just loading a webpage - GAF or otherwise.

java applets seem to cause my computer to lock up, and so do threads with tons and tons of images. but it has to be like over 30 megabytes of images to do it.

No problem on the Mac, but if you have a thread full of Flash stuff... Firefox dies a horrible horrible death.

For me, Firefox only has problems when its loading a java applet and I go to another website before it finishes. Its a huge bug that cause me to have to go to the Task Manager to kill the program.

I have that problem with FF at work, but not at home. I guessed it had something to do with the fact I have to set my cache here at work very, very small (500 KB) because it saves in my profile instead of locally and I run out of profile space right away.

I use adblock at work though, so after a few threads freeze on me (it usually responds eventually, but it takes like 5 minutes) I adblock all avatars. It's almost always one avatar that messes FF up for me, but once I block it the threads are fine... until I hit another bad one. Because I'm at work I don't want to see avatars anyway, so it works well for me.

But that never happens at home, and cache size is one of the only things I can think of different at all.

The Java problems with Firefox are usually caused by the otherwise great AdBlock extention...Try uninstalling AdBlock and try to duplicate the Java problem.

adblock is both great and lame at the same time...

at home adblock wins out

here at work java wins out.

why can't adblock just fix their java problems (and yes I am using Java5)

I've never had adblock installed so it's not that, I'm not sure it's even firefox in my case, so much as it's just the Sun JAVA VM, because it happens even if I'm browsing the same sites with IE and the java applet loads.

I did not know that... hmm...

I guess the AdBlock people looked into this a year ago...From what I gather from these posts on their message board was that they believed that AdBlock was triggering a bug elsewhere, possible in the Mozilla content-policy system (which is what AdBlock controls), or it the Java plugin. As long as they didn't know exactly where the bug was, they couldn't figure out how to work around it. I think the reason this bug has persisted so long is that you hve three sets of developers here, and unless they all sat down and worked this out together, it would be difficult for any one of them to track down.
