Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
A 48-year-old Harding Township man remained hospitalized yesterday with a fractured skull and other injuries sustained in a beating by family members and neighbors after his wife caught him sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl at their home, Lucas County sheriff's officials said.
Antonio P. Gonzalez, Jr., of 435 Degenfelder Rd., was initially treated at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, then transferred to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo under an alias, the sheriff's office reported. A spokesman for St. Vincent yesterday said no information was available about anyone under Mr. Gonzalez's name.
Mr. Gonzalez is charged in an arrest warrant with one count of rape, though he is not in custody while he undergoes medical treatment.
The sheriff's office said the girl accompanied a young adult relative to the Gonzalez house for a graduation party when the sexual assault was discovered about 2 a.m. Sunday. The girl told detectives that Mr. Gonzalez said he had a toy for her, picked her up from the family room where she and others were sleeping, and took her to a bedroom, where she was assaulted.
The girl, who was later treated at Toledo Hospital, told detectives that Mr. Gonzalez held a plastic cigarette and blew smoke into her mouth and eyes. Detectives found a pipe at the scene and are having it analyzed for drugs.
The suspect's wife, Victoria Williams-Gonzalez, awakened and did not see the girl from where she was sleeping. She looked for her and found a bedroom door barricaded from the inside. She shoved the door open and found her husband and the girl naked, Detective Mark Woodruff said.
The detective said Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez grabbed the girl and Mr. Gonzalez tried to grab his wife. Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez knocked out a window screen and yelled for help. Mr. Gonzalez fled upstairs, jumped out a window, and ran to 415 Degenfelder, where he received a pair of shorts from William Johnson.
Mr. Johnson then asked Mr. Gonzalez to leave, authorities said. Mr. Johnson declined comment when contacted by The Blade.
Mr. Gonzalez left, but was apparently confronted outside by several people who assaulted him and left him lying in the roadway, the sheriff's office reported.
Deputies found him lying along the berm. He told deputies that "no one" assaulted him and bystanders claimed no knowledge of the assault, according to an incident report.
Mr. Gonzalez refused to talk with deputies, whose investigation continues and includes trying to determine whether he has any sexually transmitted diseases. No one has been charged in his assault, which remains under investigation.
Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez told authorities her husband had been smoking crack cocaine and drinking alcohol, the incident report indicates.
