The Switch has been the best selling console since its inception, by a wide margin. People are going to buy its successor in droves, and it'll probably be the talked about device now for the next few weeks/months until it releases later this year.
Nintendo, as a business, knows this, and knows how just the name alone will be enough to move units. They did just enough in this initial reveal trailer to highlight things that are new with the console, showed off a new Mario Kart running on it, and lo and behold, hundreds of thousands of hits on Twitter, and what will likely be millions of views of YouTube by the afternoon.
A multi-billion dollar corporation I think knows a thing or two about marketing something properly. Plus, neither Microsoft nor Sony showcased the features of their current gen consoles when they were first revealed, yet both had people talking about them for months. They don't have to do a deep dive nor feature-dive at all; that's not what moves sales.
The shiny new hardware with the Nintendo Switch script on it will basically sell itself. Anything else that Nintendo goes over in regards to the console after this reveal will be solely for the people (nerds like us), to sink our teeth into. For the everyday person? "Switch 2" is more than enough for them.

Finally! Even though it's bare bones it's still quite satisfying to see an official announcement after so many rumors for so long. It's kind of funny how it seems to end about 2/3 through then another section continues with a different feel.

This reveal showed 1 actual game. PS5 and Xbox Series reveals were fine and they didn't include any games at all.
What would you say was the difference between this and the PS5 reveal? Or do you think that was also weak?

Oh, I'm sorry, did the Switch 2 release or something, or was there a date at the end of the video allowing you to find out more later on? Don't be dumb. Marketing is about building hype, but also, it was obvious that Nintendo had to move faster than anticipated due to the leaks. They aren't ready to explain the differences yet. But also, when the original Switch released, they didn't announce specs, and from what I recall, they never did.

Pretty sure they did a very similar thing last time. A stealth trailer showing a new game "Mario Odyssey" briefly. Then a dedicated event showcasing software and some finer points of the actual console and some software. The only difference this time round was Nintendo was not having to reveal the actual concept in the initial trailer.

It wasn't the best, but the clear differences were new joycons with hinted capabilities, larger size of screen and controllers, It's called Switch 2, so it can be assumed more power, and we saw a new mario kart, it's also backwards compatible with Switch games. It wasn't a bad teaser for April. I foresee a September release with 3rd party games being announced before april..Ok, we agree this was a poor intro

I understand, but this is not a Switch Pro... this is Switch 2... As I said before:
Nintendo must love their fan base. Anyone else would be criticised if they said "ah, just same but better" and called it a day with a quick 2 minutes trailer. Not Nintendo hardcore, they see it as a plus, but then had they done a long presentation full of what makes it unique they would have celebrated it.

Nintendo is the outlier here. They've proved time and time again that graphics and specs don't sell games. Games that are fun sell games and quite frankly specs don't matter here, but there will be enough time between April and September to find out more leading up to release. This wasn't a bad teaser and Nintendo has clung to having timeless classics that are replayable no matter the resolution which is less than we can say for Sony or Microsoft.
Gamecube chased the graphics train, didn't work. WiiU was a great console with great games, but it had a wierd name that no one clung to. Switch was a monster that had less power than the WiiU and sold like hotcakes. Switch 2 will continue the Switch trend as they found the perfect swiss army knife of gaming.

There's a few issues with the Switch 2 trailer from my perspective.
Opening the trailer with the OG Switch. They should be completely separating this product, allow it to stand on its own feet. This isn't a Wii U scenario, the name makes it clear this is a separate console.
Lack of any interesting annotations during the trailer like screen resolution and size, battery life, whether there's analogue triggers, the fact that there's magnetic clasps now, whether there's any new or interesting features at all really.
Showing the Joy-Cons for far too long from colouring them in to the slaloming about.
Mario Kart looking graphically like an OG Switch game and looking a little flat colour palette wise. Why choose a desert level that's geographically flat with a long boring stretch of road? No interesting mechanics shown to differentiate it from MK8 like Double Dash had 2x kart racers etc.
It was a flat reveal IMO. A Direct in April doesn't really cut it for me, they could have teased a lot more or give us something interesting.

Clearly the leaks made Nintendo expedite part of this. They weren't ready to show anything yet, likely because the games aren't ready to be shown by and large
Personally I think the trailer is fine. They emulated a lot of apples videos when they do a design change but with that Nintendo jazzy flare.

What? Just because videos are shared across all socials etc, means they are good at marketing?
No it means people are excited for Nintendo hardware.

Because they're clearly not wanting to talk about hardware yet, just that it exists. So, talking about games feels pretty unnecessary when we don't even know the concrete facts about the system, what it does and doesn't do (aside from Switch 1 things & backwards compatibility), etc. Today was really just a teaser, while April will be the event that you're looking forward to.
There's no right or wrong way. This was just the marketing strategy they chose to abide by.

It was missing the human element which was present on all of the other trailers in the past. You got a sense of scale and mobility because it would show real world examples. This felt like an Apple product reveal which lack details and character.

In all honesty, I just don't see the point besides confirming, hey this thing does exist. Which everybody knew already.
So if it's not ready to be shown (this wasn't real hardware obviously, just a CG movie), and the games aren't there, why show it now?
Just makes the entire thing feel lackluster and it doesn't feel like a grand event. Instead it's like, hey here it is. Maybe we got some games coming for it who knows
Just because you are super excited for the product itself, the hardware, I am not. I am interested in videogames. They didn't really show any. So that's not a wrong opinion that's what I find interesting about Nintendo, are the games. Not the hardware. Sorry you don't seem to grasp that tiny straw of knowledge.

To build hype, really. Just like how we see/get teasers for trailers weeks, sometimes months before a full trailer. It's not that it's not ready, they just chose a time to reveal it, and roll with it. It's clear that decision was in stone awhile ago considering the date itself leaking a bit ago.
Honestly, if we didn't know anything about the leaks, everything would feel like a grand event and surprise. But we did, so in a lot of ways it didn't.
People already got hyped about the leaks, so they were already expecting more than what they got today, and that's their own fault. The leaks didn't come from Nintendo, but today's reveal did.

The top USB-C is mainly for charging this thing while you are playing in Handheld Mode.I think they'll focus in April on what kind of future toys or gadgets that can be put on the top USB-C.
I hate the Switch 1 for not having this option.
