That confirmation comes ever closer with the latest countdown video on the Nintendo Today app, which recently appeared for users in Japan where it's already April 1.

As viewed by VGC with our Japanese Switch account, the brief video (which should appear on April 1 on everyone else's Nintendo Today feed) says "1 Day to Go" and shows a short animation of three Switch 2 consoles set up in various configurations.

One shows the console in a handheld setup, another shows it docked with the Joy-Con Grip, and the other shows it in tabletop mode with the two Joy-Cons lying loose. One of these Joy-Cons is sitting on its side, in the same position as the previous video, once again suggesting it's in some sort of mouse mode.

I need a Mario Paint entry, and an Animal Crossing game where I get to place stuff using the mouse.

So switch 2 gimmick pretty much basically will 'cancel' switch 1 gimmick... that is so 'Nintendo like'... :-D

And to be honest... before switch 1 what was the last time a Nintendo gimmick really took traction?

how would one be dishonest answering that question?

The switch controllers are too tiny for this to be comfortable using. Your hand will cramp like crazy trying to use a mouse with that tiny thing.

Is this a trick question?

The Wii, the DS, the 3DS, analog 3D controls, rumble pack, using GBA consoles as special GameCube controllers.

I didn't realize this wasn't already 100% confirmed.
It was mentioned in the leaks / rumors leading up to the reveal. The reveal video just showed a joycon on it's side, moving around, and people assumed that was that. Still no "official confirmation" ie Nintendo saying "You can use the joycon now like a mouse, here's some footage from a game showing you how that works".

Honestly, I'd love a new and more fully featured Mario Paint game.

The first game sounds dull but when you play it, it's lit!

They could put this in a plastic shell and make it even more like a traditional mouse. They could even have themed mouse shells and maybe a spot for Amiibo to ride side saddle.

Looking forward to seeing how well it works and if the Switch 2 Pro controller will have the functionality as well.

It is in the mouse position, but it lacks the sleeve. I don't think it'll work that well without it and scratch the surface.

No it's not a trick question and your list showed it:

- Everything you listed were not adopted in large space, was not adopted by the marked (rumble pak is a nice exception, but is simply evolved into internal rumble....). Let me show you THE exception: analogue control... but is it nice to remember that, (by accident?) sony showed that, sometimes, more IS better :-D

oh really? I can't picture that.
I think it'd be pretty neat. I'd think you'd also be able to connect them to your Switch 2, giving you a better grip for the console in handheld mode as well for those who don't like the JoyCons.

Glassesless 3D was a bust in the long-term, yes, but:

SNES: shoulder buttons
N64: analog stick and rumble (already mentioned)
GameCube: analog triggers (ironically now a staple in all consoles but Nintendo's)
DS: touch screen controls
Wii: gyro controls
Wii U: this one is hilarious, because it was a monumental failure and yet being able to toggle between TV and handheld play became the foundation of the Switch and the (even more similar) PS Portal

Bring on the RTS, simulation and strategy games.

Give me AoE, The Sims 2 (anniversary release that just came out on Steam), Company of Heroes and please, Sega, port one of the older Total War games. If my phone can play a port of Empire Total War then so can the Switch 2!

For Snes, i stand corrected, shoulder buttons today are obvious (but it is the same case as analogue, sony by accident showed that the more the merrier :-D).
For the rest... not exactly, other products have to similar techs to tell that Nintendo was the first one to implement.

I've said it once and i say it again, a Mario Paint with mouse doesn't cut it anymore, compatibility with a Wacom Graphics Tablet would be the way to go.
You can get the cheapest for 70 Bucks right now.

"switch is too big to be a portable. DOA"

edit: and any game that supports mouse aim can support gyro. so if you don't want to use dinky mice you can most likely use gyro.

oh ok. I've seen the 3rd party Split Pad Pro. I guess it has a flat side where the mouse sensor would go. Seems like it might too tall to use as a mouse. But ok might work.

None of that was successful??

Analog controls have been adapted by every controller since. Before that, the same was true with Nintendo's d-pad.

The Super NES controller's layout with its diamond-shaped four face buttons and top bumper buttons have been copied by almost every console, including every PlayStation and Xbox controller.

I'm pretty sure rumble has been adopted too, as well as "HD-rumble".

The DS gimmick was extremely successful and it went on to be the best selling handheld and second most successful console overall of all time.

The Wii with its motion controls dominated both PS3 and Xbox 360 that generation and led to Sony and Microsoft making their own copies, albeit to much less success.

You really want to die on the hill that Nintendo, of all companies, doesn't innovate. Videogames wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today without Nintendo's "gimmicks".

I'm just curious how comfortable and accurate it will be to use as a mouse, but I'm hopeful.

If it's implemented well, I could imagine Nintendo will have a unique benefit in the console space because PC devs in genres that suck with analog sticks could port to their platform getting a new audience. Any game with heavy inventory management could be improved too.

Yeah, we'll see. It's an interesting concept/idea for sure.

What? No. If you've used a stylus for drawing over a prolonged period of time, it's actually quite comfortable. A lot of that would depend on the ergonomics of the stylus though and if you have a good sitting (or standing) position.

Actually, I wonder if Nintendo have a pad accessory in the works so you can just sit back on the couch and use the new Joycon like a mouse on the pad, like you would with a mousepad. That'd be nice.
