Switch is my first 'at launch' console since the PS2

I'm actually quite surprised by the number of people saying 'I'm getting Switch for Zelda', as though it's a launch exclusive...
The options to me are this:
A) buy Zelda for a system I've barely touched in months and Nintendo hasn't released anything for in six months and devs have all but abandoned.
B) buy Zelda for a brand new hybrid system that has way more games releasing and is the future of Nintendo.

The choice is pretty clear to people who can afford a new system.

Switch is the first system I'll have bought at launch since the Wii. It's weird to think that was eleven years ago. Before that, the PS2.

First actual midnight launch though~

(Excited as fuck for Super Bomberman R)

We'll for people like me who didn't buy a Wii-U and never will it's exclusive.

Edit: I also like the thought of laying in the bed playing the game in handheld mode if im feeling lazy :)

I haven't bought a console at launch for the last two generations and right now I'm not even explicitly planning on ever buying a switch. I have no reason to, it has nothing really going for it, as Zelda is crossplatform. The rest aren't nearly interesting enough to make me contemplate it.

Maybe once there's a price drop and it has been a year and new games got announced

Why would I want to pay like 400 euros just so I can play the one and only game I'm interested in from the switch's launch titles? I can just pay 50 bucks and play the same game.

Maybe you want to start your Switch library with Zelda. Maybe you want to buy the DLC, that surely would be more interesting on Switch. Unless you're ok with owning the Wii U without using it for 8 months. Maybe you want to sell your Wii U and fund a Switch because Switch is getting Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart and Splatoon on year one. Maybe you want to buy the machine that will get ARMS. Maybe you just want a new piece of hardware that is better than the old piece of hardware in every single way.

If nothing of that interests you, just get the Wii U version. Saves you a ton of money (right now) and I'm sure the Wii U version will be perfectly fine.

No ones gonna call you out for waiting and not buy it at launch, so why are you even in here trying to stir up crap with people who ARE excited to buy it at launch?

Does anyone else think that this launch keeps feeling more and more failing and consumer-unfriendly? I don't know, there is just too much shit getting up. I really want to love and and want to be hyped, but it keeps getting worse:

  • The console is severely underpowered today. We are talking numbers like 900p, 720p, 30 fps, etc. We shouldn't even hear numbers like these in 2017.
  • The console competes directly vs. cheaper and way more powerful PS4s, X1s, PS4 Pros
  • No media functionality. I literally can't replace my PS4 because I need its Bluray capabilities
  • Horrendous pricing. Browser games like Bomberman or tech demos like 1 2 switch are sold at full price
  • Only Zelda as worthy launch title. I'm not too excited at Shovel Knight or Isaac which I played 10 years ago or got for free with the PS+ trash
  • Almost no 3rd party stuff
  • ...

All those core negative aspects and then the most recent news that you can spend more money on a crappy Zelda expansion pass. I actually hoped for Nintendo that they kind of shelled out a big surprise like "1 2 Switch is coming 4 free bundled with each console" or "Mario Kart made it to release" but no, it keeps getting worse.

Nintendo keeps on digging.

Well, we are talking about Nintendo here.

The company that has mastered the art of giving less for more.

I swore to never buy a launch console again.

It has bitten me hard on PS3 and Wii U.

Will wait until I know that the console will have a healthy life or that it has a game I'm really raging to play. Zelda is not a must buy for me.

Splatoon and mariokart are 1080 60. Zelda is 900p 30fps. Ryse was a launch game on xbone that ran at 900p 30fps(ish, frequent dips). Not sure how you can just throw numbers out there you pulled out of thin air.

You have a WiiU. Might as well buy Zelda for it.

But I want to play Zelda on the Switch.

Even the minor upgrades are great to me. I just can't spend $400 on just Zelda alone so I'm waiting for a game that I will play throughout the Switch's life. Likely will be Stardey Valley for me.

That was back in 2013. He did say it was unacceptable in 2017. Tbh I just want every game to be 1080p 60fps docked and 720p 60fps undocked.

Last I heard Splatoon 2 isn't running at 1080p, so unless that's just changed in the past week you're just as guilty of pulling numbers out of the air.

It's the same price as a Wii U which I also don't have. Why wouldn't I go for the better version of the game while also investing in a console that will be supported after I buy it?

Experiencing games and consoles as they come out is fun. Being able to talk to friends and likeminded people within the community is enjoyable and engaging. It's pleasurable to converse and socialse over a hobby, and owning the newest piece of tech provides a neat experience to share and discuss with others.

That's a logical explanation for a day one purchase. I think.

Yeah, despite the negatives with the Wii U and 3DS in the early days, there was something enjoyable engaging with the community from the beginning as everyone experienced the bumps and bruises.

Honestly, for me the price isn't the issue with a day one purchase, but the colour choices, since purple or white joy-cons would be number one pick. However, knowing that if they ever come out with separate joycons in those colours that I can just swap in makes the decision to buy day one easier.

My wife surprised me with a PS4 at launch, but this is my first launch console purchase.

It looks like it's going to be a real hit - such a solid piece of handheld tech. Zelda & Shovel Knight will be great in March but tbh Puyo Puyo Tetris and MK8D in April are my suited to my gaming needs. Perfect "throw on a podcast after work and pick up a game" games.

The hype got to me; I have a preorder, as I'd like to play Zelda as soon as possible. On the other hand, the games I'm particularly interested in seeing on the Switch are Pokemon and Monster Hunter, and we've yet to see anything solid about if or when those titles are coming to the Switch.

If this thread is any indication, Switch buyers also have a PS4 or another high-end system. And many didn't have a Wii U. It will be interesting to have stats in few months and years.

Consumer-unfriendly? This isn't MS trying to force new DRM on you. Just because a company positions their product to be different front the competition it doesn't make them consumer-unfriendly.

Nintendo console has been treated as a companion console due to the diverse exclusives that doesn't clash with MS' or Sony's. Now that it's also a handheld it can be treated as a console and handheld pair. Personally, I treat it as the Vita's successor in terms of technical prowess.

This is one of the rare launches where I haven't traded in the existing console to pay for the successor. I could've easily paid off my Switch, along with getting another game or accessory but I couldn't part with my Wii U. It's not like I play it often, but the thought of losing access to that library...no way.

Another reason for buying it is there's a good chance it will be the last nintendo console. Nintendo would make a lot more sense as a pure software company nowadays.

Yeah.

I want to wait for the HD remasters of the games that I care about before I even have a thought of selling my Wii U. Besides VC condition on switch is still blurred at the moment so it helps that I still have my Wii U for that.

Yeah I'm quite surprised by the number of people who want the best version of one of the major titles of this year.

It remains to be seen which ends up being the better version. Docked you'll get a 50% resolution boost, but with so little about the Switch actually confirmed at this stage it's too soon to know which will provide the 'best' experience.

If they support it, the best version will be on Cemu.

Isn't it basically confirmed that the Switch will perform Zelda better than the Wii U? Undocked could be worse but you're replacing that with portability anyway.

NVidia expects a 20 years partnership with Nintendo thanks to the Switch, because it's a platform. The main unit will be able to be upgraded. So in a sense your first sentence was right.

... and I wish I had clear, logical justification for it.

On paper, it is systematically worse to buy a console at launch. There is so much uncertainty about what the product is like, there are fewer games, and I'm paying MSRP (for the console, at least).

Despite all this, I am so excited for the Switch. I guess this is unreasonably excited, right?

I have a general idea of what I'll be getting on March 3rd, but one thing I can't quite put into words is that it's exciting to be invested in the next few years of what Nintendo will do with the console. It could be a horrible dumpster fire of support, or it could be rad. There's something exciting about not knowing right now, and I'm glad I get to be a part of a group of early adopters for this dumb, irrational ride we've invested in.

I am totally in the same camp as you, and to put it even further, ive never owned a nintendo console, the only nintendo product i've owned is a gameboy colour.
AND i've never played a zelda game before, lmao.

Pretty much. Higher resolution and a more solid frame rate when docked. I've heard draw distance is better as well.

Undocked is probably similar to Wii U.

Yes, WiiU sales definitely showed there's a strong demand towards Nintendo hardware.

I doubt it will still be alive in 5 years, let alone 20 years but okay.

It's a handheld console released after handheld consoles were killed by smartphones. It's kinda behind its times.

Going based on that last lot of Wii U footage and then the stuff from the Switch events, yeah. It seems like a noticeable improvement on Switch.

Sure, the 3DS didn't do DS numbers...but killed? Seriously?

The Switch is the first system I'm getting since the PS3. Also the first system I've ordered before launch.

The concept of the machine just works for me. A high quality portable that I can easily play on the couch while the misses is watching TV and that I can hook up easily to the TV as well just works for me. And somehow it resonates more with me than the WiiU.

Plus Zelda is hype.

Yet none of that changes the fact that you can play console quality games on the go which is what many are excited for so I'm not seeing your point.

I bought the PS4 near launch, but not at launch. It was basically when it stopped selling out everywhere.

I don't really see the Switch failing to meet demand like that, given preorders are still plentiful, but I'm picking it up at launch for best version of Zelda.

I just wanted to express that I sincerely hoped that Nintendo would take a step towards the consumer because their back is against the wall. They have massive competition on the mass market and I expected them to incent the consumer with little things like a bundled game, like a preorder bonus for the console or stuff like that.

And before I get flamed again that Nintendo does not have theit back agains the wall: Yes, there are always a bunch of neckbeard fanboys which would literally buy anything of a company. If Apple sells the iPhone 7 for 5000 $ in yellow, the first batch will be sold out. Someone who loves the Zelda series and secretly dreams of waifu Zelda will always buy the Switch on Day 1 even if we are talking 480p, 24fps and the charge lasting 10minutes. I'm talking about the mass market. The average guy who grew up with Nintendo, money is no issue at all but is just rational and compares (i.e. me).

I am just wondering why Nintendo is fucking stuff up in so many aspects which even can't be hidden if you keep blindfolding your eyes and shout "IT'S A HANDHELD IT CAN BE SHITTY IT'S BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL GAMEBOY LA LA LA".

to be clear the last Nintendo console I bought was a Wii and I'm excited for the switch. that's some strawman you've made.

as far as buying a console at launch goes Nintendo is the safest bet in the biz, so you'll be fine in that regard
What? Safe? Last time it was a safe bet for a Nintendo console launch was the SNES. Maybe GameCube ($99 yo). N64, Wii, Wii U. They all didn't become the consoles I was hoping for.

Nintendo handhelds are always a safe bet. They never let me down.

No not really.
One system lets me play the game on the tv and anywhere outside of my house, the other does not.

Sorry Ronny93, but the moment you said 30fps isn't something we should accept in 2017 and then compared the Switch to the other consoles was the moment no one cared what you had to say.

So let's take a look at Nintendo's mass market appeal shall we.

Clearly Nintendo should focus on catching up with the other two main players, and not do their own thing with their own gimmick.

I give you some love. Switch is a new cool toy for gamers. I assume you don't appreciate yet, the joy it will bring to us who anticipate it. It might change over time.

It is what it is.

N has changed. The business brains and mass market ethos of the likes of Yamauchi, Yokoi, Lincoln, Main, Arakawa. Staff who were concerned at always pushing the creative and technological envelope and not looking down on their customers. All gone.

Imo as a customer [not a shareholder], the company is immeasurably poorer now than it was in the 80s, 90s or even 00's.

I'm seriously torn on this one, don't get me wrong I owned all ninty consoles and I'll own this one at some point but not decided on 'at launch' or within its first year. factors are:

for:
- I got sold on console/handheld concept. I got my pc for gta/overwtch/re7, I don't game on mobile so idea of fifa/skrim/splatoon/zelda/indies on the go, easy lan parties, head to head battles in public sound all good. At first I didn't like the idea of motion controls, ir camera,hd rumble etc but seeing ARMS in action made me believe that this really have the potential to be the ultimate party machine if Nintendo plays its cards right.

- Obligatory Nintendo unified software output, japanese devs focus, potential high level indies support.

- Sure It'll have Zelda, Mario etc but it'll also have ARMS, which looks like to coolest thing I've seen in long time. Might be just a feeling but passing the torch to up-comers in Nintendo will lead to wonderful things look at Splatoon it's almost old SEGA resurrected, who knew Nintendo could be this hip.

against:
- I'm still not sure if ninty finally understands the current gaming market & willing to do what it takes to be leader.

Case 1 'Online '. Talk of unified Nintendo account, global server architectures, parties, clans, Splatoon test-fires etc, wonderful 8 years behind the curve but still good. Charging for it? OK not ecstatic but surely they must know that they'll have to provide value comparable to psn xbl right? No, maybe, who knows? What you get is bullets points, voice chat via smart phone, one free snes/nes game per month and Reggie pr talk of how Nintendo's own reality bubble is safe place for children and how everyone got smartphones anyways. Weeks from launch nobody knows anything about store, wii shop transfers still in limbo... Classic elephant singing happily Nintendo.

Case 2 '3rd Party'. Talk of easiest machine to develop for, scaled down UE4 ports, announcements like Skyrim all good yet only couple of original ips, couple of announcements from majors (fifa etc) few indies. Devs asking for kits via twitter, final kits being sent only 3 months ago, etc. Nintendo needs some major, perspective changing line up, not just 'good' if its aiming for wii-level success. Announce an unexpected hype generating major title (idk like Read Dead, Overwatch, something big impressive unexpected), say that all top indie games on pc will be available on switch, elevate platforms strengths via selected titles (fifa on the go is good but how about Championship Manager on top of that),

Minor Misc. Cases 'Nintendo Reality Bubble Effects'. Supply issues, create-a-demand tactic might work for Nintendo in the short term but it's also pissing of customers like me, stuff like Gamestop awarding customers with pre-orders is just pure bs. Overpriced accessories, 60 bucks for 1-2 Switch instead of pack-in, 50 for Bomberman (this might just be FckKonami though) also making me question if Nintendo ever truly learns.

Sorry Ronny93, but the moment you said 30fps isn't something we should accept in 2017 and then compared the Switch to the other consoles was the moment no one cared what you had to say.

Didn't say that it was acceptable there either. Maybe a bit to far from me to assume that Nintendo might even do something better. Obviously the best Nintendo can do is be as shit as the other systems but not that much shittier.

I don't like this blind Nintendo defending. I want to love the Switch but I just can't because if you look at it sober, there is just too much negative aspects to its launch.

We'll for people like me who didn't buy a Wii-U and never will it's exclusive.

Edit: I also like the thought of laying in the bed playing the game in handheld mode if im feeling lazy :)

You can play Zelda in bed on the WiiU too. On or off TV. I do it all the time.
