What do you guys think about the issue.

A system of syringe exchange allows a drug user to obtain clean needles free of charge, without fear of arrest. Say the system is funded by the government. Keep in mind the vast amount our government already spends on treating AIDs patients.

Band-aid or not, it's better than the current non-solution that the US gov't has in place. Keep in mind that the problem the gov't is trying to tackle is largely unstoppable.

I really haven't given it a ton of thought or research, but the consensus seems to be that it works, and I'm for programs that work. But it's not an appealing idea, so it's a hard sell politically. "Why should I pay so junkies can get high?" etc.

Why should I pay taxes so the US power elite could drop bombs on brown people? Why should I pay taxes to support anything that goes on in the wretched lands beneath the Mason-Dixon line? Why should I pay for any sort of social programs? Why should I pay for public schools when I'll never have children to send there?

There are many things that I pay for that I don't or can't take advantage of, but I have no problem fronting the money. We live in a society, and we're supposed to help each other out, despite economic, chemical, or social problems.

It also enforces a certain amount of responsibility if it is an actual exchange. Otherwise there is no incentive for the users to take care of where the needles end up.

I think it sounds like a good idea. However, like any program with vague socialist undertones and a potential to actually help people, it doesn't have a chance in hell of being approved by this administration.

I'm all for needle exchanges and anything that actually works. The reason I put that sentence in quotes was because those aren't my sentiments. I was trying to show the attitude of Hypothetical Joe McSwingvoter, as a way of explaining why politicians are reluctant to go to bat for these programs.

yeah i agree. i definitely think it should be in place. it's better than nothing afterall. But it's still just a workaround.
