Takahashi says Sony = win

I think it's inevitable that MS will gain marketshare... I think the question is how much, will they be happy with it and who will the marketshare come MORE at the expense of... Sony... or Nintendo?

Sounds about right to me, even though I'm hoping that MS and Sony end up with 50% maket share each.

Even if Nintendo only sold 1 Revolution console, you'd be wrong.

I liked how the Mercury News did a story a couple days ago on the next gen war. The business section had in big letters "Playstation 3 vs. Xbox 360"

Nintendo what?

Yawn. Microsoft doesn't have to win anything but the holiday season and if Madden looks like the screens then they won't have a problem getting a leg up in this battle. Now can we have one MS vs. Nintendo vs. Sony pr thread.

Sigh. No, I wouldn't. To be wrong about something, you have to assert something. Did I say that I predict that MS and Sony will each have 50% share? Nope.

Furthermore, you are wrong. Let's say Sony sells 30,000,000, MS 30,000,000 and Nintendo 1. Sony and MS would each have 50% market share through the Magic of Rounding, which is something that people invented to keep math nerds from driving them crazy.

Analysis: Said Phil O'Neil, president of Vivendi Universal Games: ``We're agnostic on the consoles. But if I had to choose a religion, I'd think very seriously about Sony.'' Another executive said his large game-publishing company would shift more resources into making PlayStation 3 games instead of Xbox 360 games.

Oh, well! If Sony has Vivendi on their side they can't lose!

...

Anyway, I think it's pretty clear Sony will maintain market dominance, the question is just how much marketshare they'll have to give up to Microsoft. Any gain by Microsoft is a victory for them, and a loss for Sony... the cost of being such a clear market leader. Nintendo is in its own rut, I don't think the increases they make will be particularly detrimental to Sony or Microsoft, although it'll still be a profitable venture for Nintendo, I bet.

The buzz: Microsoft showed off big improvements to its Xbox Live online service for gamers, and the Xbox 360 will come with wireless Internet access.

Wait what? +100 if MS grows a bran and includes the Wi-fi adaptor in the base model.

What astounds me is why anyone would hope for this.

1. Less competition
2. ........
3. BENEFIT THE CONSUMER

catfish, did you read the comment correctly? His hope is that the competition is SO intense it ends up in a dead fuckin' heat. That sort of competition would be freakin' insane.

But behind closed doors, publishers were showing a lot of good Xbox 360 games. Jack Sorenson, THQ's executive vice president of worldwide studios, noted there was plenty of smoke and mirrors at the press conferences.

He said that until Sony presents working, interactive games running on real hardware, it won't be clear if Sony has a discernible edge in game graphics quality. Microsoft's developers, by contrast, are much further along in showing groundbreaking games, he said. ``There's a huge difference between closely controlled demos and working games.''

Best part of the article.

I dunno, this sort of article is totally useless... there are still too many unknown factors to make this kind of judgment. That should be totally obvious to everyone.

Two competitors is plenty. Regardless of my admiration for Nintendo, they should just leave the console market...their marketshare is getting smaller and smaller every gen, and they don't seem to be making the right moves to rectify that. MS vs. Sony, more than enough competition to keep both companies from becoming too complacent.

Yeah, and it came from a THQ exec? Has the world gone topsy turvy?! 0_o

Putting aside Nintendo for a moment, if Sony and Microsoft were at 50/50 marketshare (or close to it) that wouldn't merely be "enough to not become too complacent", that'd be clash of the titans type shit. We already feelin' some of the heat from their competition. 50/50 is nuts.

I hope the gaming industry as a whole turns into the movie industry. Filled to the brim of shit entertainment but with a few great gems ever year..

Oh wait, that has already happened.

We're not quite there yet. Getting close though...

If history is anything to go by, at least in these mid decade transitions, the leader will probably turn out to be the opposite of who's everyone's pick. That is Nintendo.

Yeah I was meaning that wishing another competitor out of the race is really an odd thing... I mean how does nintendo being in the console race negatively affect us? I would say it wouldn't and its more companies fighting for a piece of the pie. Only downside really is having to suffer drinkys schtick followed by the ATTACK OF THE CLONES.

I'm no market dude though, but surely 3 is better than 2 for us.... I would've thought that dreamcast still being in it in a 4 way 25% tie would be the ideal actually.

Hell yea, do you think Sony would keep trying so hard if there weren't companies like MS releasing powerful hardware? We'd end up with what Nintendo did to the handheld market and have 1980s hardware for decades.

How do you figure? Dreamcast was part of a mid-generation in a sense, and everyone knew PS2 would win. Everyone knows it now too. As much as I like Nintendo (and I'll get Revolution at launch), I just don't see them being able to take the market shares from Sony or MS.

I don't care how many competitors there are up to 3, but any more than 3 is getting ridiculous. I love games and I want the opportunity to try as many as I can, and it's already hard enough with 3 systems.

I see Nintendo gaining market share next gen to become a solid 2nd place.

Never been to Vegas, eh? ;)

Teasing aside, it's always possible... but I think (personally) it would take a colossal fuck-up on Sony or Microsoft's part.
